I posted the following on Palm's Forum with no luck. Hopefully someone
here can help.

When installing either the Palm Desktop Software from the CD that came
with my Palm T|X or the downloaded version 4.1.4e, the Palm Desktop
comes up, and I can sync. I can go in and out of the Palm Desktop as
many times as I want to.

Once I reboot though, the Palm Desktop Software does not run. It gets
stuck on the pa1mOne splash screen but goes no further. When I look at
the taskbar, there is no icon running for Palm. When I look at Task
Manager , the process Palm.exe is there but is idle. I am running
Windows 2000 SP4 on a Pentium 4 class machine.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times, making
sure to clean out the registry. Same results.

HALP!

I would like to write a few very simple utility programs for my T3. These
programs involve simple user interface, alarming function and a small
database.

I only want to write simple programs, like Visual Basics for Microsoft
application.

I've never written anything for Palm, although I've programmed in C, Java,
visual basic for PC in the past. I also have done both server and client
side development for IE.

What are my choices? Is writing a Web application the easiest way? If yes,
what browser should I use?

Thank you for answering,

Emma

Good Evening Hardeep.

Unfortunately, the connectors for the Palm Vx are different from the
"Universal" connector that the Palm m-series, Tungsten series and Zire
series use. I'd suggest looking on eBay or Craigslist if no one here
has an unused spare.

There might be a serial-to-USB adapter, but I'm unsure of how that
plays in your question. Did the Palm Vx come with a serial plug? I
had one, but I don't remember.

Hope that helps.

Dear friends

I am looking for a sync and carge cable for
the Palm Vx. I have been happy with an
retractable expansys cable for the old Vx
and my T-3.
They seem to have discontinued the one for Vx.
     http://www.expansys.com.au/product.asp?code=119177

I have two questions
1. Is the Palm Vx connector similar to m500 and
the likes? that cable I can still buy..
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3688432
2. Is there another place where the Palm Vx cables
      might be available?
3. Is it worth trying to find a cable which goes from the
old serial cable to the USB connector?

thanks

Hey all,

You probably already know this Drew, but if you go to file import, import
from program you will see a list of programs that Outlook (for me Entourage
Mac) will import from. I¹ve done this before even with the .csv files and
you¹ll get a dialog which will ask you to designate which field gets mapped
to which field, you must manually change the initial Œguess¹, did you get to
this point with your .csv?

For instance I use Now Contact (Mac or PC) and the process above is how I
moved my database to Entourage. For Palm Desktop it is even easier, Now has
a conduit that synchronizes directly with Palm. My only problem is going
from is syncing from Now to my T|X directly, it craps out after custom 1.
But still that¹s a lot of useful information up to that point.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm a pretty advanced user and notice that the other apps do export in
.csv. For some reason, Palm keeps the calendar in a proprietary format.

hello - I hope this group can help me out. I suspect this is a tired
subject so I apologize in advance. I did a search but was unable to
find any posts/threads that were useful.

I am a longtime Palm user and have to (unwillingly) convert data over
to Outlook as my new job is standardized on MS-Exchange and WILL NOT
support Palm (jerks).

I've exported data from the Palm Desktop before so I understand the
process. What I'm struggling with is that the data is not
normalized. I have phone numbers where email should go and vice
versa. So, this make field mapping messy as I have >400 contacts and
really don't want to go in and manually correct the ones that don't
match up.

I believe this is simply a matter of poor dB design on Palm's part as
I think this is happening b/c of my labeling certain contact fields
differently than the default. I don't understand why Palm didn't
design the dB so that data follows the field names, as opposed to
following field location.

Anyway, we're not here to dispute dB design. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how I can normalize the data...or any 3rd party
options that are useful.

I guess I should have said using NCUD involves not using the Palm OSes calendar
and
contact database apps but the NCUD apps on your computer, however, on your Palm
device you will be using the OS apps. No to worry, NCUD has more features then
your Palm
device and gives you complete control over what events (business or family) and
contacts
(public or private), etc. get synced.

If you are presently using Palm Desktop as your calendar and contact database
not to
worry either, the NCUD conduit settings allow you to overwrite computer, then
set to
synchronize for further syncing sessions.

Again, I'm not promoting NCUD rather stating what a more robust application than
Palm
Desktop can do.

Hey John,

Maybe I don't understand the question but this is what I do with Now Contact &
Up-to-
Date:
1. I have enabled the public event and contact server (software database) on one
'server'
computer, which is actually my work desktop. I really should use a dedicated
server but
lack of funds at this time.
2. On the other machines (3 Macs) including the 'server' workstation I have
'rendezvous'ed
(sp) with the public servers, software connection.
3. Thus, everytime I open Now Contact & Up-to-Date (NCUD) from any of the 4
workstations the computer automatically two-way synchronizes my contact and
calendar
with the public event and contact servers, which are basically a database file
on my work
workstation.

Now, from one workstation, my home computer, actually my office is directly
behind my
home but not close enough for WiFi, I sync my Palm TX with directly to NCUD
using the
conduits that Palm OS supplied. I also did the same with my old i705.

I haven't tried to do this from the internet, but I do know it is a snap to
access the public
event and contact server from the web the issue for me was simply security, I
have yet
needed to access from the internet because I'm the only one using the calendar
at this
time, although several of us are making contact changes, they don't affect my
travel
needs.

Nonetheless, I'm not trying to promote NCUD as much as attempting to show how
this
program does work quite nicely. Again, I use the LAN features daily on multiple
computers
with multiple employees plus wife accessing daily too!

Hope this is helpful!

I am (still) looking for a better way to sync my palm with two machines,
both PCs. Preferably wirelessly either bluetooth or better yet over the LAN
and (pipe dream) over the internet. One is my manager's PC and one is on my
desk. It looks like Up-to-Date is not the answer for this according to the
technical FAQ.

Any suggestions? Right now I have to hand carry the palm to each machine
and sync. This is a bid unwieldy when I am trying to get out the door for
an appointment.

You're going to need a calendar-sharing program or calendar server,
like iCal (and as much as I hate to even mention anything by Micr
$loth) or Outlook/Exchange if you're stuck with Windows. There are
also some pretty decent Open Source solutions for Linux.

Technically, you're looking for a WebDAV server, which is the
protocol that all these systems use to exchange and reformat calendar
items and events between themselves. There are also commercial
services out there on the web, like AirSet, which will be more than
happy to take your calendar data (and your $) and upload it onto
their servers.

If you have a Yahoo! account it can be set up to import a Calendar
database. Then your recipient would have to log into your Yahoo!
account to see the calendar. Maybe you should have a specific Y!
account just for you and your recipient (as opposed to sharing your
personal info.)?

Chuck,
Thanks for the response and sorry I was not clear with my question. What I
wanted was to be able to share my palm calendar online with someone. Would you
know how I could do this?

   Thanks,

on a Mac Powerbook G4, using HotSync Manager v 3.2.1 to a Treo 650 from Verizon

Has anyone successfully synced the PDA component of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing,
version 17, by Broderbund, to a TREO 650 (from Verizon)?

The MBTT 17 manual has an appendix with clear instructions about how easy "Mavis
PDA"
(it's there on the Broderbund CD as a separate app) should be to install on a
Palm-OS PDA,
but I'm encountering the following problem:

it seems that maybe all I'm finding on the Broderbund CD are files with the
extension .pdb
and none with the extension .prc because I get this message in the HotSync
Log:

Local Synchronization
Failed to install Mavis Beacon 17 to the SecureDigital (SD) Card
     - No application on your handheld to open these files. If you have recently
installed
such an application, please run that application and then perform a HotSync
operation.

(and I can't get anything on the Broderbund disc to show me a .prc or .pdb
extension
when I use Mac OS X's Get Info command—I only see "application"

The Broderbund CD includes two files—MBTT 17 and Mavis PDA—and I can drag
either
one to the Install Handheld Files window of HotSync, but after syncing I see no
new icon
on my TREO's home screen, nor on the SanDisk 256 SD card I have installed in the
TREO

The .pdf file-Manual supplied by Broderbund says:

To install the software, select Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing for Palm-Powered
Handhelds from the main launcher screen. Follow the onscreen instructions to
complete the installation. After you install the application, hot synch it to
your PDA.

but when I double-click on the icon, Mavis PDA, it only launches HotSync Manager
without
placing any files in the Install Handheld Files window—I have to drag Mavis PDA
into the
latter to get it there

another thing is I can't change the destination in the Install Handheld Files
window from
SD card to PDA. if I try to do that I get a msg telling me it can only go on
the SD card

the manual's reference to "main launcher screen" and "on-screen instructions"
don't seem
to match my experience with the CD, but maybe PC users see these things

could it be that the Mavis files won't install right if they don't sense the
presence on the
TREO of a .prc file which allows use of a wired or wireless keyboard for the
TREO? (I don't
have a keyboard yet, so I haven't put any keyboard software on my TREO yet)

this seems a little far-fetched, but at this point . . .

Help! this week I swore those twins of mine are gonna learn to type when I had
to step in
and type their reports for them

I get this on both bluetooth and cable sync. The sync starts and
immediately stops as this error box pops up on the monitor (not on the
handheld). A quick search of Palm Forums and Google search have not
been much help. Any thoughs would be appreciated. (I'm running Mac OS X

This is a screwy deal w/ Palm. Just go to their site ,
< http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html > and
d'load the 4.2.1 desktop by picking any Zire model. It's a .sit file but
installed on my wifes new Mac w/o a hitch. Then sync w/ Hand held
overwrites Mac. And "Bob's your Uncle"
