I'm not really either a SUMO or a BEAM expert, but all the SUMOs I've seen
use a microprocessor.  You would have to compete against them unless you get
enough BEAM builders interested to justify a new category.  I think you
would have to run from batteries to get enough power to be effective.  On
the other hand, most SUMOs seem to use pretty simple fighting strategies, so
a BEAM approach to control might work.

There should be another competition in San Francisco during the Spring but
the date hasn't been determined yet.  I hope you can make it.

Josh,
BEAM Sumos are definately welcome to compete in the normal events,
they can actually do pretty well against the processor type. There
isn't much to a Sumo anyway. I have seen some good schematics on the
web for building a BEAM type Mini-Sumo. Just be sure to follow the
guidlines for building so that you're allowed to compete. Basicly that
means keep it under 500 Grams and within 10cm x 10cm square. No
weapons are allowed except pushing wedges.

Don't forget to join us for our monthly robotics meeting - remember they are now
on the first Saturday of the month at SFSU - they are NOT on Wednesday at the
Exploratorium. The meeting starts at Noon, and goes until 5 PM.

The address of San Francisco State University is 1600 Holloway. The Science
building is on 19th avenue between Stonestown and Holloway (just south of
Stonestown Galleria.) The room number is SCI 256.
Map: http://www.robotics-society.org/images/sfsu_map.gif

For our first meeting - January 4th, Dr. Nilgun Ozer, Mathematics, Engineering,
Science and Achievement (MESA) director for SFSU, is graciously buying 4 pizzas!
So bring your appetites as well as your robots.

Speaking of which, I don't have any speakers lined up, so please bring in your
robots, any photos from the Games, and if you'd like to do a demo, please e-mail
me and I'll set it up.

----

I'd also like to thank all those people who volunteered during the robot games 2
weeks ago - we simply could not have pulled off the event if it weren't for all
of the volunteers.

Most especially, I'd like to thanks Simone Davalos, Ken Mochel, Jon Nebenfuhr,
Terry Grant, Joe Hering and the rest of the NASA crew, Michael Henry, Ken
Calegari, Patty Pritchett, Norm Harman, Rick Halverson, the fantastic SOZ guys,
Charlie and Dave from Qbox, Nick and Rebecca Donaldson, Al Margolis, Jack
Buffington, Roy Hellen, James Isom and his class, Chris Manson, Dave Hrynkiw of
Solarbotics, Erik Wood at Parallax, Todd Gilbert at Jameco, and most especially
everyone who brought a robot!

Super special thanks to Bill Harrison, for so generously donating our fabulous
new Sumo ring and driving all the way down from Seattle - and to Ken Gott for
storing it!

And extra bonus thanks to Craig Gartner, who built our mini sumo's that some
kids got to play with (for free). Craig graciously donated a lot of time and
parts to make that happen.

I'm sure I forgot to thank someone, so forgive my failing memory if your name
wasn't on the above list.

----

Happy New year everyone, and see you Saturday. Check out the new website!

If you have some free time, the FIRST Lego League competition needs volunteers
this weekend - Sat/Sun Jan 11-12th to help judge/ref/help-out in San Jose.

You get fed, you get a free t-shirt, and you get to help America's youth play
with bots and become productive citizens.

I know it's a weekend of your time, but it means a lot to the kids. If you can
spare a half day, whole day, or your whole weekend, it will be well worth your
while, and make a big difference in these kids lives.

And your life too.

Just reply to this e-mail if you can help.

ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show
Call for Entries

The second annual international "ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show" will
take place at EYEBEAM Gallery in New York City in mid-July, 2003.
Creators of talented robots are invited to submit their work for
possible inclusion in the show.

The deadline for entries is March 1st, 2003. Please see the ArtBots
website at http://artbots.org for details on how to submit your work.

About ArtBots

ArtBots is an international art exhibition for robotic art and
art-making robots. No firm rules exist on the types of work that can be
submitted; if you think it's a robot and you think it's making art, then
it's an art-making robot. About fifteen submissions will be selected for
participation in the show. The show will run for two days (saturday and
sunday) with all artists in attendence. Selected works will remain
installed during the rest of the week as part of EYEBEAM's summer
robotics festivities.

The first ArtBots show took place in May, 2002, and included the work of
ten artists and groups. Nearly six hundred people visited the show
during its one day run, and the show received very positive coverage in
many print and online publications in the USA and internationally,
including The New York Times, TimeOutNY, BoingBoing.net, and the NASA's
Cool Robot of the Week site. You can access extensive documentation of
the show and participants at: http://artbots.org/2002

ArtBots FAQs:

Q: Is ArtBots a robot competition?
A: Not really, it's more of an art show. However, we do give out two
awards at the end: the "Audience Choice Award" and the "Robots' Choice
Award".

Q: How many participants will be in the show?
A: About fifteen.

Q: I'm not sure if my work qualifies for your show. What exactly are you
looking for?
A: As the name of the show implies, we're looking for work that is some
part art, and some part bot. The meanings of "art" and "bot" are left
open. Possible formats/media include objects, installations, sculpture,
live performance, etc. If you're still not sure, the documentation of
previous participants should give you some idea of the kind of work
we're looking for.

A: Are the artists that participate in the show compensated in any manner?
Q: Unfortunately, no. We provide as much support to the participants as
we can, but ultimately all costs are the responsibility of the artists.
Hopefully this will change in the future.

Q: Do you have an exact date for the show?
A: Not yet. It will be on a weekend in mid-July. We just aren't sure
which one yet. We'll post an update as soon as we know.

Q: Is ArtBots open to people outside of New York City?
A: Of course. However, we're not in a position to offer anything in the
way of support or accommodations for out-of-town participants. (Although
we can probably help you find a place to stay if needed.) The first
ArtBots show featured artists from New York, Boston, Ohio, and Belgium.
We anticipate more geographically diverse entries this year.

Q: Is there a swimsuit competition?
A: No, there is no swimsuit competition.

Q: What's the point of ArtBots? Aren't there enough robot competitions
already?
A: We started ArtBots because we wanted to have fun and to celebrate
some of the creative, non-violent, and not-so-competitive aspects of
robotics. People all over the world are doing interesting, important
work that combines art and robotics; ArtBots is our way of focusing
attention on that work.

Where does everyone shop for junk in the bay area? Are there any
particularly outstanding thrift stores, junk yards, or surplus goods
shops around that are good for old electronics?

I tend to shop at Urban Ore in Berkeley, Thrift Town/Community Thrift
in the Mission, and Goodwills on the peninsula.

Any know of any other places for techno goodies??

Thanks,

John

You are looking on the wrong side of the bay!

Try HSC (http://www.halted.com) or Haltek in Mountain View. There used to be
several others in Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, but since I no longer live in the
valley I can't help you much.

Ace Junkyard in San Francisco gets in huge pallets of dead computers all the
time, plus cables, components, Edsels, busted vending machines, misc. junk.
. .lots of artists and roboticists use it and Bill The Junkman is mostly

Lots of IC's, motors, components: just strange and wonderful. It's

ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show
Call for Entries

The second annual international "ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show" will take
place at EYEBEAM Gallery in New York City in mid-July, 2003. Creators of
talented robots are invited to submit their work for possible inclusion in
the show.
The deadline for entries is March 1st, 2003. Please see the ArtBots website
at http://artbots.org for details on how to submit your work.

About ArtBots
ArtBots is an international art exhibition for robotic art and art-making
robots. No firm rules exist on the types of work that can be submitted; if
you think it's a robot and you think it's making art, then it's an
art-making robot. About fifteen submissions will be selected for
participation in the show. The show will run for two days (saturday and
sunday) with all artists in attendence. Selected works will remain installed
during the rest of the week as part of EYEBEAM's summer robotics
festivities.

However, we do give out two awards
at the end: the "Audience Choice Award" and the "Robots' Choice Award".
Q: How many participants will be in the show?
A: About fifteen.

Q: I'm not sure if my work qualifies for your show. What exactly are you
looking for?
A: As the name of the show implies, we're looking for work that is some part
art, and some part bot. The meanings of "art" and "bot" are left open.
Possible formats/media include objects, installations, sculpture, live
performance, etc. If you're still not sure, the documentation of previous
participants should give you some idea of the kind of work we're looking
for.
A: Are the artists that participate in the show compensated in any manner?
Q: Unfortunately, no. We provide as much support to the participants as we
can, but ultimately all costs are the responsibility of the artists.
Hopefully this will change in the future.
Q: Do you have an exact date for the show?
A: Not yet. It will be on a weekend in mid-July. We just aren't sure which
one yet. We'll post an update as soon as we know.
Q: Is ArtBots open to people outside of New York City?
A: Of course. However, we're not in a position to offer anything in the way
of support or accommodations for out-of-town participants. (Although we can
probably help you find a place to stay if needed.) The first ArtBots show
featured artists from New York, Boston, Ohio, and Belgium. We anticipate
more geographically diverse entries this year.
Q: Is there a swimsuit competition?
A: No, there is no swimsuit competition.

Q: What's the point of ArtBots? Aren't there enough robot competitions
already?
A: We started ArtBots because we wanted to have fun and to celebrate some of
the creative, non-violent, and not-so-competitive aspects of robotics.
People all over the world are doing interesting, important work that
combines art and robotics; ArtBots is our way of focusing attention on that
work.

Hello there Cliff and Robotics Society & Planetary Society Folks. Thank you so much for connecting me to this group. We would be very honored to have a link from the Planetary Society to www.driveonmars.com

Say, I am presenting at an outreach planning meeting at JPL next week about how the Atmosphere worlds might serve a valuable role in the upcoming MER missions, especially supporting surface operations outreach (we can model mars surface that MER sees and allow people to drive on mars virtually).

Would the Planetary Society be interested in being a part of this effort? Could I discuss you as a possible participant?

Cliff I expect you would like the RSA to be listed as an outreach participant for DriveOnMars as well?

Greetings Humanoid Wranglers,

Here is a Robotics Society of America (RSA) Original Legacy Web Site robot
news update:

"The voice-commanded Dr. Robot, available next year…This is a toy. But it
walks, talks, dances, evades obstacles and can even tell jokes or give
investment advice. Its secret is your PC, which it uses as a gateway to the
Internet via a Bluetooth link. This Web connection, along with an onboard
camera, enables you to, say, check in on your kids from the road. The
downside: It moves like a wobbly tot, shaky and unable to handle stairs...If
it falls, Dr. Robot can get back up. After an hour, it automatically plugs
itself into a power outlet for recharging. Interfacing in real-time with a
PC, its intelligence has no limit."

Drive On Mars project
for NASA Mars Exploration Rover project public outreach
seeks interested groups

Greetings Robotics Enthusiasts,

Cliff Thompson here, "Mediameister", Robotics Society of America .  I'm asking on behalf of my friend DigitalSpace Founder Bruce Damer if you would be interested in being an outreach participant in Bruce's "Drive On Mars" project.  The "Drive On Mars" project is a NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) Virtual Worlds Simulator for the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) January 2004 MER landings on Mars next year. The simulator was created with Adobe Atmosphere Virtual Worlds Builder & includes Physics Properties (gravity) & Avatars. Bruce has setup the "Drive on Mars" website & has done considerable earlier pioneering Atmosphere work for NASA Ames, including a virtual habitat on Mars   & a Simulation of the International Space Station with the Personal Satellite Assistant. Bruce is presenting at an outreach planning meeting at JPL next week about how the Atmosphere worlds might serve a valuable role in the upcoming MER missions, especially supporting surface operations outreach ("Drive on Mars" can model mars surface that MER sees and allow people to drive on mars virtually). Bruce's presentation at JPL is Wednesday (he leave's by car tomorrow or Sunday) and he wants to pack in as many folks as possible as outreach participants.  If you are interested, please email Bruce at the following contact address in the next day or two as the presentation is on Wednesday January 22nd:

Yes this looks great, I would like to add only:

at the top, a title:

Drive On Mars project for NASA Mars Exploration Rover project public outreach seeks interested groups
Web address right under the title:
http://www.driveonmars.com

at end of the introduction add a contact:
Contact: Bruce Damer damer@... in the next day or two as the presentation is on Wednesday January 22nd. (pls dont publish my email address on the web.. trying to beat back the spam)

And in the body of the intro, for VR, use the term Virtual Worlds (we dont use VR as a term to apply to these online spaces as it connotes head mounted displays etc). And can you remove:
slated for potential use in the NASA Mars 2004 mission, &
as we dont have any use scheduled yet for the BrahmsVE.
and change Dashboard for ISS to "Simulation of the International Space Station with the Personal Satellite Assistant"

Thats it!

Bruce

Bruce,

Here's my "letter-of-introduction" for your "call for outreach
participants".  I would attach your "mission statement/outreach participant
role statement" (or just include it following the text below".  Does this
work for you?

Cliff
