Speakers in SF this Wednesday
This month's speaker is Roger G. Gilbertson, President, Mondo-tronics Inc. and
Founder of RobotStore.com.
Send in the Robots: What, Why, When and How?

What is it about robots that fascinates us so? What motivates us to
create them?
Should we fear what we make?

Join Roger G. Gilbertson, award winning designer, robot builder, founder of
RobotStore.com, and past president of the Robotics Society of America for a
fast-paced exploration of the possibilities and perils we may discover on the
robotics frontier.

Roger's articles have appeared in Nuts & Volts, Servo, and others. He has
performed in theater, on television and given many public presentation on
technology, creativity and the future.

After the meeting, we'll have time to network, show off robots (if you've got
one, bring it!) and talk about upcoming events!

Given there are so many other robotics events this
weekend (Robonexus, Robothon, DARPA Grand Challenge,
X-Prize Cup), it was decided to slide this months club
meeting one week to October 15th.

We no longer have access to Brighton Academy as a
meeting place so this meeting will be held at 6:00PM
at Abbys Pizza next to Fred Meyers in Grants Pass. We
will meet in the main building and not in the annex
building that we have used in the past. This will
probably continue to be our meeting place until we
find a new permanent location.

See you there!

Hey kidzders:

Sorry to pander, but...

I'm doing a big robot show at Ft. Mason from Nov 12-13, and we're desperate for
sponsors! We've got TONS of space for booths/tables and can give sponsors lots
for their money. The event itself usually brings in 3000 people a day, so there
is LOTS of traffic.

Full sponsorship info is here:
http://combots.net/sponsors.php
http://combots.net/combots-sponsors.pdf

Also, there's the full deal here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5624455205

$500-$1,000 is great, but we can do much larger (can't everyone...) Lots of TV
exposure for the nice guys who can help us pay for the event...

If you are personally willing to work to find sponsors, I'm willing to give 20%
to people who line up the deals.

We are moving our machine shop and we have WAY TOO MUCH STUFF. A decade
of robotic combat, burning man and general stupidity has left us with a
rediculously huge amount of cool stuff that even if we lived to 1000
years old we would never get a chance to play with...

Garage sale starts at 10am - 245 Gate 5 Rd. in Sausalito CA 94965 on
Saturday October 22nd (and 23rd if stuff is still left) we will have a
big garage sale. Everything must go.

October is here and so are a few more ZCS classes!

Coming up in just a few weeks is our "Making Stuff with Stuff" class. With a
combination of materials science and practical construction skills, you will
learn the same techniques professional designers and engineers use to build
physical/mechanical prototypes. This class runs for four weeks on Tuesday
nights starting Oct. 25.

In just over a month from now we we have scheduled our very popular
Robotics-4-Kids one-day class. In this class kids 6-12 years old learn basic
robot building skills while they design and construct a variety of robots.

Go to http://www.buildcoolstuff.org/classes for more info and to sign up.

For you experienced builders, keep an eye out for a new mini-course in adding
wireless communications to your projects.

Have a great day!

Last month of July there was a robotics event at Spain as part of Campus-Party, as organizers say, the most important online party of the world, were this year they were about six thousand people connected to the net during one week in a huge Fair building at Valencia (Mediterranean coast of Spain). Well, as part of such big party, there was an area of robotics that I coordinated called CampusBot. They were 200 participants and interesting conferences, robotics shows, workshops,.. I have finally translated the news to English (originally in Spanish) so you could see what happened there in the following link. Also you could download a short video of the event.

Hi,

those of you following the Darpa Grand Challenge might be interested to know
that the winning vehicle, Stanford Racing Team's "Stanley" is on display at
the San Francicso Motor Show at the Moscone Center. Stanley is a modified VW
Toureg outfitted with laser and radar rangefinders and a surprisingly small
set of onboard electronics, and you can check out the car up close at the VW
exhibit. Very cool.

cheers,

n.

Hello and Happy Holidays from ZCS!

Another year is almost over and the new year is just around the corner. We have
scheduled a few new classes for our younger builders and a few of our most
popular classes for you "older" builders.

Starting the second week in January, we've scheduled two multi-week classes,
"Electronics Prototyping" and "Programming for Electronic gadgets". Both
classes start out assuming you have little or no experience, but quickly get you
on your way to building some very "cool stuff". Each class stands alone, but if
you decide to take both, you will have the ultimate introduction to building
electronic devices. For all the details
http://www.buildcoolstuff.org/mwclasses.html

In February, we have scheduled a series of weekend one day classes for kids:

First off, we have our Robotics-4-Kids level two. This new class is designed as
a follow up to our very popular Robotics-4-Kids class. Students will build more
advanced robots and even get introduced to programming. For 1st - 3rd graders
we recommend taking Robotics-4-Kids level one class first, but the older kids
can start off at level two.

We are also introducing our "LEGO Inventor's Workshop". This course is
specifically designed for newest builders ages 5 to 11 years old! Students
learn basic mechanical principles while building fun and exciting contraptions.
Projects include "balloon-powered rocket cars" and "trapdoor cable car parachute
machines".

Last, but definitely not least is our new "Amusement Park Science" class.
Students get to design and build large-scale model roller coasters, Ferris
wheels, and other amusement park rides. Who would imagine that learning about
energy, speed, acceleration, and gravity could be so fun!

For all the details on our classes for kids go to
http://www.buildcoolstuff.org/kidclasses.html
Until next year...

If the guy went through 3 replacements then I'd assume the software
cannot deal with something in the physical environment. Does it only
go into these spins in a secific area, time of day?
May be a pattern recognition or light polution issue. There are some
Roomba user groups out there that should be consulted though.
Here's the Yahoo! one:

No, not with virgin sacrifice. That was LAST year.

So it seems that time has rolled around again to celebrate everything that needs
to be celebrated in the dark of the night and the thick of the rain: friends,
family, friends who are family, and several large slabs of carefully prepared
feast items. You betcha that goose is getting fat.

Therefore we (of the David and Simone We's) would like to invite all and sundry
to our second annual

Twenty Four Hours of Jul*!

RSVP for our address and driving directions.

12 Noon, Friday, December 23rd to the murky ending December 24th

Yes, from Twelve Noon on Friday December 23rd to sometime midday on December
24th there will be feasting, merriment, the settling of old scores,
Julnisse-tossing contests, tales told of great battles fought, Glogg drinking
by the Jul Fire, songs to raise the rafters, and probably several sorts of
inadvisable activities that will probably leak out to the park and involve the
fire department (like last time, only THIS time we'll get the damn things LIT,
dammit).

Anyhoo, come one, come all, small, small children MOST warmly welcomed (they're
deliciou--I mean, we like them!). Bring a libation, and a contribution for the
SF Food Bank. Also bring things that make you feel most like celebrating:
family, friends, old picture postcards, stories to tell, gramma's enchilada
recipe, cookies, your favorite sweater. We will also probably be engaging in
some form of the fine, fine Mexican tradition of Blowing Shit Up For Christmas,
but probably not until the wee ones are in bed or have ear protection so I
wouldn't worry about it.

We'll have nibbles, goose, turkey, vegetarian and vegan snackies, goose, sweets,
savories, geeses, the finest of cheeses, wines and cakes as well as butterbeer
and hot chocolate, geese, geese, and geese. And maybe a turkey.

We're at Florida and Precita, mere steps from the intersection of Cesar Chavez
(Army) and Bryant streets. Right off the Cesar Chavez West Exit off 101 for
you East Bay types.)

Please to RSVP if you would like to come, just so we know how many geese (and
other stuff) to get. If I left any one off this list (you know who they are)
please tell 'em to RSVP.

Simone: 415-307-DIVA
Or email me back.

Reminders shall be sent closer to the date. Oh yes.

*That's Yule to the Non-Norsk. Being Godless Heathens (sorry mom), we celebrate
the Ancient Viking ritual of "Feasting and Drinking Until We Fall Down Because
We Can." Julnisse are the specially-trained Scandinavian gnome servants who
make mischief but make really great bechamel sauce.

Presently I am a final year student of "Computer Science &
Engineering" department of The University Of Asia Pacific in Dhaka.
For the last few years I had been working on ROBOT related projects
and got a number of prizes both at national and international levels.
To continue my research on ROBOTICS, I would like to extend my
project and plan to develop an intelligent ROBOT that will respond
faithfully as per thinking power of the operator. For example, for a
particular expression of the operator a certain signal is generated
in the brain and supplicated sensors may read that signal and
proportional signal may be transmitted to the ROBOT to do the
necessary works.

To implement the project, I need better lab facility and the
equipments that are not available in Bangladesh. So I need your
suggestion and help. For details information about my research work
you can visit my web site:

Now I am interested for MSc degree program leading with PhD.

January is almost over, and February is KIDS month here at ZCS. We have three
different classes for kids coming up.

On Saturday Feb. 11 we have our "Robotics-4-Kids level two". This class is
designed as a follow up to our very popular Robotics-4-Kids class. Students
will build more advanced robots and even get introduced to programming. For 1st
- 3rd graders we recommend taking Robotics-4-Kids level one class first, but the
older kids can start off at level two.

On Saturday Feb. 18 we have our "LEGO Inventor's Workshop". This course is
specifically designed for newest builders ages 5 to 11 years old! Students
learn basic mechanical principles while building fun and exciting contraptions.
Projects include "balloon-powered rocket cars" and "trapdoor cable car parachute
machines".

On Saturday Feb. 25 we have our "Amusement Park Science" class. Students get to
design and build large-scale model roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and other
amusement park rides. Who would imagine that learning about energy, speed,
acceleration, and gravity could be so fun!

For all the details on our classes for kids go to
http://www.buildcoolstuff.org/kidclasses.html

Have a great day!

Hobby Engineering is Expanding!

We are on track to grow a lot this year and I need to hire my second
full time employee as soon as possible. What I am looking for:

- Someone with a demonstrable track record building things with the
kinds of supplies we sell. It can be robots, kinetic art, electronic
modules or almost anything else. I need to see that you can both
come up with a creative idea and turn that idea into a tangible
result.

- Someone with a strong work ethic. Building things is hard work. I
need you to help build Hobby Engineering as a company. I need you to
help me finish some unique products and services that I have in the
pipeline. I need you to help our customers build things too.

- Someone who wants to learn a lot about a lot of things in a short
period of time. Hobby Engineering is already at least a little bit
different than those other places selling robotics / electronics. By
the end of 2006 I plan to be a lot different.

- Someone who can explain our products and technology to students,
artists and hobbyists. This will include telephone tech support, in
store retail consulting and teaching classes. You don't have to be a
professional engineering but you do need to start with a reasonable
how-to level of knowledge about the products we sell and have the
ability and interest to learn more.

What you will get:

- A fair but not outstanding salary.

- More or less no benefits package. I expect this to change in 2007.

- A chance to play with great toys as part of your day job.

- A solution to that dilemma of deciding what to do with all your free
time. This year will be very intense.

What you will do:

Your main mission will be to bring our technology to customers in a
very tangible way. That will include explaining products via the web,
one-on-one and in front of a small classroom.

To make that possible you will help develop new products and services
that are not being offered anywhere else.

You will also have to help the business in any way that is needed.
That may include packing orders and sweeping the store. At first
there will be a significant amount of this routine work as I bring in
new staff and systems. Within a few months it should be a small part
of your job. Don't bother applying if you think you are "above"
cleaning the toilets (but I'll probably keep doing that job myself for
now).

If this sounds interesting please reply off-line to al@... and
let me know the
best way for us to begin a conversation. I'm ready to have the right
person start working today.

founder, www.HobbyEngineering.com

PS: I am also looking for a part time employee or two to help with
shipping and packaging. This is a great job for a college student. I
mainly need help in the afternoon and mainly early in the week.
Availability Monday from about 2pm to 5pm is essential. Beyond that I
can be fairly flexible to work around class schedules and other
commitments. I need at least 20 to 30 hours total help per week.
This may be either one nearly full time position or two part time
positions depending on the applications I get.

Event: Western Canadian Robot Games
Date: Saturday, May 13, 2006
Time: Registration 8:30, General Admission 9:30
Place: SAIT Polytechnic Campus, Calgary, Alberta
Info: www.robotgames.com or info@...

Dear Fellow Robotics Fan:

I'm pleased and excited to remind you about our 16th Annual Western
Canadian Robot Games! We're one of the longest running robotics
competitions around and are working hard to put on a great show for
all the talented designers in the region! This year we plan to
augment the contest with multimedia effects and professional staging
to add more electricity to an already entertaining day.

The wonderful thing about the WCRG is the diversity of the
competitors and competitions! All of our challenges can be built
from scratch and are all Lego-friendly (Mindstorm kits make great
resources for all our contests!). There are also a number of
commercially available kits you can purchase or build the society's
own SAM-bot minisumo robot kit in one of our workshops.

It is a great venue for folks of all ages to learn from advanced
hobby robot designers and wrap themselves in the excitement of
design and innovation!

Our prizes will reward your efforts! Last year our competitors took
home thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise, and we are
working hard to improve on that this season.

You can enter any or all of our challenges for a single $40
registration fee/person ($30 /WCRS Member) and that entitles you to
our gift-bag, t-shirts, full access to the bullpen, and a memorable
day. If you have a team, additional T-shirts may be purchased for
$10 each for the other team members. To enter, visit our
registration page at
http://www.robotgames.com/forms/games_registration.htm .

If you want one of our promotional CD's full of videos, rules,
resources, games, and pictures please email us and we'll send one
out to you. Alternately, you could download the files yourself from
our web server.

DON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! Due to time constraints there are a limited
number of spots for each event , so please pre-register to guarantee
a spot for you and your team.

Sincerely,
