The Portland Area Robotics Society, PARTS, invites you to participate
in our Spring 2006 BotFest competition Saturday, May 20, in Portland,
Oregon.

BotFest is an informal, relaxed and fun version of our annual big
PDXBOT event. Henceforth, we will have several BotFests a year in
even numbered years, and the big PDXBOT each odd numbered year.

The May 20 BotFest will have these events:

Sumo (micro, mini, Japan 5' ring, lego)
Walker
Line Following (beginner, advanced, lego)
Line Maze (open, lego)
Robomagellan (beginner, advanced)

The venue is quite pleasant in a gym and adjoining field, near
Washington Square in west Portland. And, I think we can promise nice
spring weather.

Entry fee is $8 for a competitor. No registration is needed; just
show up and have fun! Map, rules, and other details are on the PARTS
website at http://www.portlandrobotics.org/ (click on Events).

I hope we see you there!

Hi all!

RoboGames is June 16-18th at Ft. Mason - 430 robots coming in from
aroudn teh world. Walking bots, sumo bots, combat bots, analog bots -
all sorts.

We of course need volunteers!

Wed-Thu 14-15 June is set up. Mostly grunt work, but also builder check-in.
Fri-Sun 16-18 June is the event. Lots of cool stuff going on, and
plenty of posititons.
Mon 19 Jun is tear down. Oh, the ugliness...

This is a great event with 600 people from around the world. As a
volunteer, you get to meet lots of people and see amazing robots! Too
many positions here to list - from robot wrangler to pit-runner to
soccer referee...

We could also use some donated laptops. the RSA is a 501c3, and we
can give you a tax-deductable reciept. ANY laptop, any processor, any
OS - so long as it is network capable and has a browser.

Please respond off-list if you'd like to help out or can donate a laptop.

Thanks guys!

Dave;

Sounds like an exciting time! 600 people from all over the world!
Where the hell is Fort Mason? I assume it's in the USA, but beyond
that I've no clue. The other 599 people from around the world may not
know either. It would be nice if these Robot Olympiads and whatnot
would include a more specific location in their promo's. Inquiring
minds want to know!
Thanks,

Dave

Note: Due to a little "glitch" in the meeting room
schedule, this months meeting will take place in the
open part of Pizza Hut. We'll have to find a quiet
corner and hope the place is not too busy. :)

Remember that we ALL agreed that we would bring our
bots for a little friendly competition this month.
We'll do line following and sumo. I'm not sure how
that's going to work out without our regular room, but
I'm sure we'll find a way. BRING YOUR BOTS!!!

Roboteers - Unless something goes wrong, we'll be
having a pretty neat demonstration of ultrasonic
ranging at Saturdays meeting. We'll be explaining
basic ultrasonic concepts and I'll be bringing along
the necessary test equipment to "show you" just what
the ultrasonic signals look like. You'll learn what's
really important when you transmit the signal and just
what those echos will look like when they bounce back
to your robot to get decoded. I think everyone should
find this really interesting!

Subject: Fwd: [sf-caco] SRL show on August 11th in San Jose
askelad
Send Email Send Email

I imagine or hope most of the SF caco list has heard about this upcoming show

If not, this is your one announcement

What is SRL?

SRL is short for for Survival Research Laboratories http://wwww.srl.org

Check out the website for explanation and Vic Vales RE/Search book

This is a do not miss event ( but I'm biased having been part of
SRL shows since the early 90's)

Why go?
It has been 6 years since SRL had a full Nor Cal public show ( the
one under the freeway during the dotcom era did not really count as
a full show due to certain civil limitations of the authorities)

If you have never seen a full SRL show don't blow it, just go

The permits have been approved

The show is local

Full SRL shows are far too rare locally due to certain "safety"
concerns by certain authorities

The show is inspired by Dante's inferno

It's preliminary name is " 6 Flags Over Hell"

We have a full week for setup which should allow opportunity to build
a nice full set for the machines to destroy

Tickets are now on sale see www.srl.org for link

Tickets are already half sold out
It is $25 a pop
Tickets might not be sold at the door so get them now

San Jose is not an excuse to miss this. You could wait a very very
long time if ever before you will ever see a full SRL show in SF
again.

Some SRL vets think this will be the best show in over a decade (
better then Austin)

Don't forget your hearing protection, ear plugs. ear muffs, and
breathing protection and, just in case, wear non-flammable ( cotton
) or melt resistant clothing. But be sure to wear something special (
it is Hell and the Armageddon we are celebrating after all) and
bring a camera.

If you don't know Survival Research Laboratories check the website
www.srl.org for machine and previous show descriptions

SRL is kinda hard to describe, but with 20 plus years of practice it
does not come by the Most Dangerous Show on Earth title lightly.

The crew list is totally full so there are no volunteer options

However, if you do want to help out the ISEA conference ( the host )
we have been told one can get in to lots of ISEA stuff ( including
the SRL show ) for 20 hours of labor

See this web page for info on this option:

I'll be running the Pitching Machine with a pal. So say hi to me
post show, its always great to have friends at a show.

Roboteers,

MEETING: Southeren Oregon Robotics will have it's
monthly meeting this Saturday (Sep 9th) at Pizza Hut
in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 Ne 6th St, Grants
Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

Remember to bring your bots bots for a little friendly
competition again this month. We'll probably do line
following and sumo. BRING YOUR BOTS!!!

Hopefully Jon Peterman will dazzle us again with more
progress on his little six servo walker. I am just
finishing assembly of a new LynxMotion BRAT humanoid
(walker). I should have it moving under it's own
power for the meeting. You won't want to miss this if
you've seen the BRAT videos at:
http://www.lynxmotion.com/ViewPage.aspx?ContentCode=videos&CategoryID=17
This thing is very cool. You better come and check it
out!

As always... Bring along anything you are working on
for show-n-tell! You are working on something right?

See you there... John

Hello everyone!

I'm relatively new to the field of Hobby robotics, but I'm enjoying it
a great deal. I'm working on a prototype for one of my projects and
have been studying as much as I can about hardware, parts, electronics
and programing.

I've desiged a circuit board from my prototype and I think it's not
too shabby, but I want someone's experienced opinion so I know for
sure if it will work safely.

Would anyone be willing to look at it for me and give me any pointers?

Thank you!

monthly meeting this Saturday (November 11th) at Pizza
Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 Ne 6th St,
Grants Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

Two sets of Mattracks were given away at the last
meeting. One set went to Zane Moore who has figured
out a way to install them on his BoeBot. Zane will be
doing a demo for us at this meeting and telling us how
he managed to overcome a lot of difficult challenges
to get these working.

Turnout has been pretty low lately. I hope more of
you can come this month. I know we all have a lot of
irons in the fire, but this is YOUR club and we need
YOUR support to keep it viable and interesting.

This month I'd like to have a discussion about where
the club is headed. I hope everyone will be there and
share their ideas. We seem to be loosing some of our
"SPARK" and maybe we need to change our direction to
get back on track.

As always... Bring along anything you are working on

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone familiar with dewalt drill motors,
know if there is a comprabable brushless motor with
the same size, performance and available gearbox..

I'm looking to replace the 18 V Dewalts/gearbox that I have used before.

If you are not familiar with the dewalts this website has some info.

I've used the dirt cheap $29 18V's from Harbor Freight. They're
certainly not as good as the Dewalts, but they do well for pushing a
robot around.

Thanks for the tip David.
Are there any brushless motors that that are comprabable to
the Dewalt?
I've seen big brushless motors that can do the job,
but nothing that is as small as the dewalts.

Hey Pete,

I currently have dewalts and I want to swap them out.
The advantages that the brushless has over brushed
are just what I want

Most brushless that I have seen,
are twice the size and weight of the dewalt
just to get the same performance.

I was curious to see if there is a brushless equivalent that
matched the dewalts.

Thanks,
Dennis

Brushless motors are generally designed for long term and efficient applications.  Drill motors are designed for short term intermitent operation, high torque, and are not very efficient.  Which is probably why it is hard to find similar brushless motors of the same physical size delivering the same torque that a drill motor provides.  Also, high current, reversible, speed controllers for brushless motors are hard to find and build.  Also, they are considerably more expensive than brushed motors.

Another place to look at is www.aveox.com

Thanks,
Dennis

I am curious, why is it so important to have a brushless motor?

The only ones that I am aware of that has some serious power (for the
hobbiest) are the Astro 040 Brushless Motor www.astroflight.com

Thanks guys.
I like harbor freight as well.

But I'm pretty sure that their drill
motors are brushed.

I'm looking for a "brushless" equivalent to
the brushed Dewalt/Harbor Freight motors.

Cheers.
Dennis

I buy most of all my tools for work from Harbor Freight. That have a
great
warranty and good selection. Yah there cheap but there cheap ;).
