Take stock-

Is your Line following robot acting like a free range chicken
wandering around the barnyard?

Did your Sumo robot get pushed off the ring by that block of wood you
were using to test it?

Does your racing walker seem like it's doing a Tim Conway "Little Old
Man" impersonation?

Did it just occur to you that "right hand rule" doesn't refer to that
gesture your kid gave you, but to a strategy for your line maze robot?

Is the closest your RoboMagellan robot's gotten to a cone the time
you had it in the trunk of the car the last time you went to Ben And
Jerry's?

Get BUSY! TWO WEEKS TO PDXbot!

PDXbot starts at 10:00 AM Saturday, May 19th at the Lloyd Center
Doubletree Exhibit Center and includes the full gamut of robot fun.
Beginner and Advanced Line Following, all sorts of Sumo, PARTS -
Walker Race, Talent Show, SRS Line Maze, and the Dorkbots Art Robot
Contest.

We will also have demonstrations from other area groups, including
FIRST, Vex, FIRST Lego League, ITT Tech, Oregon State University
Robotics Group, and The Boise Area Robotics Group.
Vendor tables, tech exhibits, prizes, raffles, T-shirts and much more
will be offered.

The SRS- RoboMagellan navigation contest is set for the next day,
Sunday, May 20th on the South Park blocks on the PSU campus, same place
as last time, just south of the Smith Center. Start time is 11AM.
Don't miss this great contest, either as a competitor or as
spectator. These robots are getting better each time out.

Keep up to date on the latest news and information about PDXbot at

www.PDXbot.org

You'll find info on rules, directions to the Doubletree and Portland
State, sponsor information and everything you'll need to know
to attend.

And, tune up those robots. It's a lot more fun when great robots show
off their stuff.

Time to take stock of your robot stable and start making them ready
to compete! Every robot that shows up has a chance at a prize.

Roboteers,

MEETING: This months meeting of the Southeren Oregon
Robotics club will be held this Saturday April 14th
at Pizza Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 NE
6th St, Grants Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

Kevin will be showing his latest creation. He has
modified his Boe-Bot to hang from a string and walk
along it. You've gotta see this! :) I think he is
bringing his flame throwing robot too. I'll be
bringing a new "Penguin" robot from Parallax. This is
an amazing little walker that is less than 4" tall and
has all kinds of cool sensors. This little guy has
not been released for production yet so you will be
one of the first to see it in person. This is one HOT
bot!

As always, we'll have "Show and Tell" so bring along
anything you are working on to share with the group.

BringYourBots!!! ...John

Subject: How to select a Tx/Rx for my robot?

I am just getting started designing my first robot. I need help
selecting the Tx/Rx. I have never used or been around these, so I am
not exactly sure what I should be looking for.

My robot will be both powered and steered by the rear wheels, so there
will be two separate motors. I also will have one other function, I
need to control a pull type silenoid to release a cable.

I am thinking 3 channel Tx/Rx. If this is the case, then when I get
the Rx, how do I access the signals. I believe they will be PWM and if
this is the case, then a PIC can read and convert the signals for me.

Are there any docs, hints, lessons on using a Tx/Rx setup on the net
for me to look at?

Thanks,
Brian G.

The answers will depend a lot on your budget and what you plan to do
with the robot.

If you are serously interested and plan to stay with robotics for
awhile. I would recommend getting a transmitter with more
capabilities than you need right now. At least 3 proportional
channels are needed if you want to ever have a combat robot with a
motor driven weapon. Some RC car transmitters only give you on an off
on the thrid channel, or are so slow to change the position on the
third channel that it really isn't usable. You can use a good
transmitter over and over with each new designs, so don't skimpt to
much here.

For large competitions the new Spektrum system is the way to go. You
will avoid the problem of not being able to test properly because you
don't always have access to the frequency. This usually isn't a big
issue at smaller events.

To save money you may be able to pick up a used transmitter from
someone. A lot of people are trading up to the spektrum radios. I
have a couple myself.

If you are talking about a combat robot, most people use off the
shelf controllers for the motors. Many of them have the ability to
convert RC Servo PWM built in. In the insect classes you may be able
to find a controller with a weapons channel that can drive your
solenoid.

Tell us a little more about what you are doing and we may be able to
give you some specific suggestions.

Hope this helps.

Terry

ESCs (Electronic Speed Controls) as used with RC cars and planes allow you to control DC motors with your radio radio (back, forth and stop). You are basically pulsing these between 1 and 2 milliseconds for clockwise/counterclockwise and 1.5ms for stop. This is how you would control them with your microcontroller as well (pulse them). An ESC allows you to treat DC motors like servos. You would need two; one for each wheel. I'm using the Novak XRS on my robots http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGNG5&P=ML

Careful! High-end RC car ESC's are generally limited to forward as reverse is not allowed in RC car racing. Get the "Sport" version which usually implies reverse... also in general you need to stop the ESC (1.5ms) before reversing direction. Most commercial versions expect the user to go forward, hit the brake (reverse throttle) and then go back to the neutral position and reverse throttle again to actually backup... this protects the MOSFETs. The microcontoller would simply need to have a subroutine that stopped the motor before reversing direction. An ESC could be used to actuate the solenoid as well.

Good luck,
Camp

Roboteers,

MEETING: This months meeting of the Southeren Oregon
Robotics club will be held this Saturday June 9th
at Pizza Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 NE
6th St, Grants Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

Those of you that were at the last meeting saw Kevins
old flame throwing robot. He is doing a total
overhaul of that robot for his senior project at OIT.
He has made HUGE progress on the robot since the last
meeting and will be showing it again this month.
Among other things, he has completed the rolling
platform using the new Lynxmotion tracks and some
powerful gearmotors. He should have it powered up for
a great demo.

We'll also be talking about a new kind of line
follower that you can develop using an Atmel Tiny13
chip and the STK500 development board that many of us
just got. This should be an interesting challenge for
those of you that want to get up to speed on the Atmel
chips.

As always, we'll have "Show and Tell" so bring along
anything you are working on to share with the group.

Being robotics people, we develop skills in
mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. With
this in mind, I've found I tend to appreciate the
projects of others more than I used to, especially
when they built some crazy redneck toy thats
overpowered, destructive, or has steel spikes for no
other reason than to look cool. So I started this
topic on my local robotics group forum, and wanted to
share its contents with others (plus some of this
stuff is just plain funny) so feel free to check it
out.

Roboteers,

MEETING: This months meeting of the Southeren Oregon
Robotics club will be held this Saturday July 14th
at Pizza Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 NE
6th St, Grants Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

I hope everyone is bringing something for show-n-tell
this month. I'll be bringing my new tracked robot to
demo (pics attached). Lynxmotion posted a video of
this bot to youtube last week. You can see it at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zau8b6XGvb0 You don't
want to miss my demo at the meeting. I plan to drive
this thing down the table over everyones pizza! :)

We'll also be continuing our discussion from last
month about an Atmel Tiny13 based line follower. For
those of you that missed it, we're talking about using
a small line follower as a test bed and learning tool
for getting up to speed on Atmel programming with the
STK-500. With a little luck, I'll have a working
prototype to demonstrate. Hope you all can make it.
We'll be deciding on whether or not we want to have
boards made for this project.

Lastly... We'll be having some special visitors at
this months meeting. Belinda and her son Harrison,
who were members of the club years ago when they lived
in Grants Pass, are passing through town and hope to
make the meeting. Harrison continues with his
interest in robotics and will be showing us what he is
doing with his BoeBot. We look forward to seeing both
of them again. :)

As always, we'll have "Show and Tell" so bring along
anything you are working on to share with the group.

MEETING: This months meeting of the Southeren Oregon
Robotics club will be held this Saturday August 11th
at Pizza Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 NE
6th St, Grants Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

At this months meeting we will be launching the Atmel
based line follower project discussed at the last two
meetings. If anyone has missed out on this, we are
making a Line Follower based on the Atmel Tiny-13.
The real objective is to use this project in
conjunction with the STK500 Development System to
learn Atmel programming. I have now received the
production pc boards for the project and they will be
available at the meeting. The boards will cost $10.
I hope to make a kit of the parts availabe for about
$5 more. The board could be used with other motors,
but it is designed around the Solarbotics GM-10. If
you want to buy the GM-10 gearmotors and wheels at the
meeting, I will have them for $10 each. If you
prefer, you can order them from Solarbotics in Canada
for $13.75 plus shipping. :)

If you are planning to get involved in this project,
it is VERY IMPORTANT that you attend this meeting. We
will be discussing the bots circuitry and how
everything goes together and gets programmed. There
is no manual so if you miss this meeting, it's going
to be pretty difficult to get started.

As always, we'll have "Show and Tell" so bring along
anything you are working on to share with the group.

MEETING: This months meeting of the Southeren Oregon
Robotics club will be held this Saturday September 8th
at Pizza Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 NE

At the last meeting we delivered the first batch of
LineBot kits. Hopefully, those that received them
have them up and running with at least the test code.
I have just completed another dozen kits so anyone
that was not able to get one at the last meeting
should be able to get one this time. The price
remains the same at $15 for the board with SMT parts
installed and the through hole parts in a bag. I
still have some of the Solarbotics GM-10 motors with
wheels and tires for $10.

Hopefully, at least some of you have been working on
your own code for the bot. I have not seen much
activity on the forum. I hope that is not an
indication of progress! :) At this meeting we will
discuss the schematic and some basic aspects of
programming. The explanation of circuit operation
should be enormously helpful to anyone writing code so
you don't want to miss this meeting. I hope those
that have made some programming progress will share
their experience with the group. I'll bring my line
follower board for anyone that wants to show off their
work.

Roboteers,

MEETING: This months meeting of the Southeren Oregon
Robotics club will be held this Saturday March 8th
at Pizza Hut in Grants Pass. The address is 1465 NE
6th St, Grants Pass. The meeting starts at 6pm sharp!

I'll be bringing some pictures and video of the
progress our new friends at OSU have made on their
MARS Project. This is some pretty exciting stuff! I
also hope to bring a new bot I'm getting from
LynxMotion if UPS gets it here in time. This thing is
really cool! I'm going to attempt to attach a pic of
it to this email. Don't know if that works or not,
but I'll try. Hopefully we'll also see more
discussion and some demonstrable progress on our "new"
line bot challenge.

As always, we'll have "Show and Tell" time for
anything you are working on so bring your projects
to the meeting! Also remember that this time can be
used to announce events of interest or for just about
anything else that is robotics related. For
example...
If you have stumbled into a particularly interesting
website or scrounged a really cool part from some
piece of junk, please share it with everyone. The
only restriction is that it needs to have some
connection to robotics.

BringYourBots and Eat Some Pizza!!!

ArtBots 2008 Call for Works

ArtBots (http://artbots.org) is pleased to announce that the fifth
international ArtBots exhibition for robotic art and art-making robots
will take place at the Trinity College Science Gallery in Dublin,
Ireland on September 19-21, 2008. Creators of talented robots are
invited to submit their work for possible inclusion in the show.

We have no fixed idea of what qualifies as robotic art; if you think
it's a robot and you think it's art, we encourage you to submit your
work. Regardless of whether it’s hi-tech, low-tech, or neg-tech, we’re
interested in the ideas you’re working with, not just the gear.
Proposals for workshops, performances, and other kinds of participation
are also welcome.

Each ArtBots is a bit different; the location changes and we invite new
humans to co-curate the show with us. We hope that by changing the
specifics of the show each year we can keep it accessible to a diverse
range of people, works, and ideas.

+++++++

This year’s co-curators are:

Warren Ellis: author of novels, comics, video games, and screenplays;
blogger and creator of numerous online forums

Marie Redmond: computer science professor; director of the MSc
Multimedia Systems Course, Trinity College; entrepreneur

Douglas Repetto: artist and teacher; Director of Research at the
Columbia University Computer Music Center, director and founder of
ArtBots, dorkbot, organism, and music-dsp

+++++++

ArtBots is a hands-on, community-oriented show, run by and for artists.
Participating artists install their own work and are present during the
show to meet one another, maintain their pieces, and talk with visitors.
Each participant is given a 1000 Euro artist fee to help cover the cost
of attending. All costs, including shipping, travel, lodging, meals,
etc., are the responsibility of the artist. While we cannot provide
additional monetary resources, we are happy to provide invitation
letters or other documents that might help artists with local grant
applications, sponsorships, etc.

Important Dates:

Deadline for entries: 1 May
Acceptance notifications sent: 2 June
Artists confirm participation by: 16 June
Show load-in and installation: 16-18 September
Show open: 19-21 September
Breakdown and load-out: 22 September

+++++++

To submit your work for consideration for ArtBots 2008, please fill out
the following form. In addition to the form, please provide
documentation (photos, video, sounds, plans, etc.) and a brief statement
describing the work and your motivation for creating it. Tell us why the
work is interesting, and help us understand how it fits in the context
of the ArtBots show.

We strongly encourage you to create a website with your entry materials
in an easily viewable form. This will allow the three geographically
separated curators to view the materials as you intend them to be viewed.

Email attachments, printed documentation, slides, videotapes, CD-ROMs,
and DVDs are all acceptable as documentation, but will make it more
difficult for the curators to view your work. We regret that we cannot
return submitted materials, so please do not send originals.

Please send your entry form and documentation to:

or:

Entries must be received by May 1st, 2008. There is no entry fee. We
will send you confirmation via email when we receive your entry. Have fun!

What is the Science Gallery?

The Science Gallery is a new public science centre located in the heart
of Dublin city. A place where ideas meet, the Gallery will bring
together people with diverse interests and backgrounds including
creative thinkers and young innovators, to connect, explore, create,
debate and share ideas on science, technology and the arts, opening up
these fields to new audiences.

The Science Gallery ‘space’ consists of a 144-seater multimedia theatre,
studios, café and stunning open gallery space, providing an ideal
location for new emerging creative talent to be discovered through a
programme of changing exhibitions, events and workshops.

With a target audience of 15 year olds up and an emphasis on creating a
collaborative community, the Science Gallery, which launched in February
2008 with LIGHTWAVE, a nine-day festival exploring the art and science

Got a robot? We've got an event for you! There are THREE events coming up
in the next two months:

ComBots Cup III (combat only)
May 3-4, San Mateo Fairgrounds (Maker Faire)

RoboExotica USA (bartending and artbots only)
May 10, 111 Minna, San Francisco

RoboGames 2008 (70+ different robot events!)
June 13-15, Ft. Mason, San Francisco
And get Trading Cards for your robot!

An event for everyone! Read below to find out details on each event.

---------------------

Details, event by event:

COMBOTS CUP III
It's back! If you've got a combat robot, we've got an arena! Open to
robots 30 pounds to 340 pounds, it's your chance to warm up for RoboGames
and compete for the glory of holding the ComBots Cup for the next year.
Since the event is held at Maker Faire, you not only get to compete, but
you get to check out some of the best builders in the country. You've
still got 2 weeks to register, so if you've got a combat robot, we want to
see you this May 3-4 in San Mateo.

ROBOEXOTICA USA
Cocktails, art, and bars. It's like heaven, only without the harps.
Started 10 years ago in Vienna, this is the first time the show comes to
America. If you've got a bar-bot, this is your chance to show it off - it
can deliver beer, mix drinks, or just hang out and hit on girls. We'd also
like to see your art robots. Whether it hangs on a wall stands against
one, this is really fun show and exhibit. The opening party is May 10th in
SF, but your bots will get to stick around and be seen by gallery-goers.

ROBOGAMES 2008
RoboGames, the world's largest open robot competition, invites mechanics,
closet machinists, artists and engineers of all ages, skills and means to
compete at RoboGames this June. RoboGames is listed in the Guinness book
of records as the world's largest robot competition, and we want you to be
a part of it! Yes! There is still time to register your robot.

"My robot?, Why, it’s just a dorky little thing made out of spoonstraws and
a BASIC stamp!"

That doesn't matter at RoboGames! With over different 70 events to choose
from, any robot, in any form, is welcome to compete! From art robots to
autonomous navigation, robot sumo to fire fighting, even bots that don't
fit into any category can register for "best of show."

The event is open to anyone, not just university students, professionals,
or other schools. Some of the finest builders are garage mechanics and
backyard experimenters, but RoboGames also hosts professional engineers,
robotics companies, and other organized teams. RoboGames also encourages
young engineers to come out and show their stuff, so we made more than 10
events just for under-18 events with NO registration fees!

Participants will be joining an international field of competitors (over 30
countries were represented last year) and competing for the prestigious
gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in every event! RoboGames is an
excellent opportunity to indulge mechanical know-how, adapt science
fetishes for good and come out and play among fellow makers, thinkers and
builders.

Registration closes in one and a half months, but don't wait! The event
opens to the public June 13-15th, and fills the stands with people eager to
see your bot.
