Hey Dave,

I am in town for this weekend and thought I might drop in to your club meeting
if there is one.

I don't have your phone number anymore, so I thought this would be the best way
to find out if there is a meeting this weekend. Please anyone respond to this as
soon as possible so I can decide.

The web page says 1st Saturday of every month, so that would be this Saturday
unless it's changed or canceled due to holidays.

Hi all!

Hoping some one (ones?) out there might be able to help with potential leads for
an odd candidate that needs to stay bay area for wife's career. The email link
here goes to my main account, so please use that unless you have a general to
all reply to this.

I have a PhD in psychology (behavioral neuroscience) and BS in psychobiology. My
work has been in in vivo and in situ electrophysiology of learning systems. I am
used to working with complex systems, as well as having manufactured my own
drivable electrode mounts, and motorized the commutator for the system (pics
posted a while ago).

I have a cognitive science/psychology background as well with an interest in
learning systems, and have c++ (rusty) and matlab programming skills. Learned
some information theory and wrote scripts for analyzing my latest data (posters
are on line if you are interested - email me).

AND, I am a FAA licensed A&P (airframe and powerplant) mechanic, having worked
primarily on military C-12 (Beechcraft KingAirs), so also have held secret level
security clearances.

As you can see, I am an odd candidate as I don't really fit normal job
descriptions/niches. However, for the right company willing to look past labels,
I could be an incredible asset with my creativity and the multitude of skills
and knowledge areas I have to draw on.

My apologies if you feel this is spam, but right now I need to try all avenues!

Thank you all for your patience on this post, and for any information any of you
can provide!

Roboteers,

This is a reminder that the SORSA meeting is this coming Saturday the 12th at 10:00am at Kids Unlimited in Medford. We will be holding a White Robot (White Elephant) gift exchange. If you wish to participate, just dig through your box of robot junk and find something(s) that can be used to build a robot. Wrap it up in some cheap wrapping and bring it. Everyone who brings an gift will be allowed to participate.  The goal of this is to use the parts you receive to build a robot by next years exchange and the best (voted) robot from these parts wins a real prize.

Please remember that the value of the items should be very little and rarely new. Screwdriver sets and things that can't actually be used in a robot should not be considered for the exchange. Here's a list of the type of things that work good for this:
Old Wheels pulled off old toys
Plastic domes
Easter egg halves (used for head or body of robot
Motors pulled from old electronics
Gears and chains
Aluminum tubing
Chunks of brass and or aluminum
various sensors from old toys like the furby
Old robot toys that can be hacked for parts
etc

This is just a small list, but you get the idea... IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE USED IN THE BUILDING OF A ROBOT!!

Our president Doug will not be able to attend and if some freakish snow storm hits, there is a possibility that the meeting will be canceled. Please check emails before heading to the meeting this week just in case.

Roboteers,
We are sorry to say that this months robot meeting is canceled. President Doug has a prior commitment and due to the weather I am not able to make it over the pass (I live in the K-Falls area). So neither of us are available to make the meeting happen this month.

We will see you in the new year! In the mean time, Happy Holidays and dream of robot presents under the tree.

Hello present, former and future Cocktail Roboticists.

The next exploration of Cocktail-Robotik on the fair shores of the USA
will take place February 17th and 18th, 2010, at the historic and
histrionic DNA Lounge.

We would very much like it if you - yes, YOU - were to bring a cocktail robot.
We like them. And you get to hang out with other cool people at a bar with
actual girls.

The event will be very similar to the events in Vienna, Austria and the
previous 2 in San Francisco, which some of you attended.. There will be
drinks, there will be robots, there will be exciting times provided by
Johannes Grenzfurther and assorted crew.

Please convince like-minded cocktails roboticists like yourselves that
they really want to bring a cocktail robot for our fun little soiree.
The more bots the merrier. The event will be strictly 21+, sorry no <21
people, even if they built the bot.

Please contact me with any questions about our noble endeavor and
register ASAP. In order to do this, please register here:

http://robogames.net/registration/event/view/7

If you haven't competed at RoboGames, you'll have to create an account
first (adding both humans and robots to the dB). The system uses open
ID, which tries to make it faster. If you create an acct, you'll have
to re-click the above link to actually attend the event.

And as always, spread the word... We'll be making club card fliers this
week if you want to spread them around.

Thanks!

Hey Folks:

I'm not too sure wether this is the best place to post this question - so if
anyone considers this spam - I apoligize about that.

I'm in the market for some minature omni-directional wheels but I can't find any
that have a diameter less than a few inches. I'm looking for a set that have
diameters less than 1 inch. Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

My other option is to make them. Any hints?

Only two and a half months to go before the big show, and we need you to
register!

Everyone loves to wait til the last minute (hey, all robot builders are
procrastinators, don't feel like you're the only one....) but this year, help us
to help you - be registering now, it helps us with our media partners, our
sponsors, and just being able to properly rent enough (but not too much)
equipment for you.

April 23-25th, in San Mateo!
http://robogames.net/registration.php

And this year, we have an official hotel with a shuttle bus that will pick you
up at the airport, and make daily trips between the hotel and the venue - so no
need to rent a car!

Hope to see you there!

It's that time again!  Robot meeting at the Kids Unlimited building this Saturday at 10am.  Coop will be heading up this months meeting, so don't miss it.

It was awesome to see the projects last month, especially the teenager who is working with the PICAXE controller and building his robot from scratch! I hope to see a lot more of that as we continue to move forward.

Roboteers, this is an early reminder of this months SORSA meeting at the Kids Unlimited building on riverside ave, Medford (old bowling alley).

Bring your boxes of junk and we'll do a mini robo-swap at the meeting.  I expect this to be a great meeting with lots of new people due to the two demos we'll be doing at the Medford and Ashland Libraries this Saturday the 6th.  If any other members would like to come and help out with these presentations, it would be much appreciated!!  These demos are to help them kick off their Teen Tech week at the libraries.

For those wanting to help, be at the Medford Library before 1:00pm and the Ashland Library before 5:00pm and bring your robots!!

Also looking forward to seeing Dave Salch and his son at the next meeting, I suspect his lifetime interest in robotics and his years of experience with Microsoft will be a great asset to our club!

See you there!

For those asking about soldering irons, my best recommendation would be to simply stay away fro the cheap $20 and less irons. General rule of thumb, just about anything $30 and up will be ok. For those of you who are serious about soldering and plan to do a lot, you should invest in a good temperature controlled unit which will run just about $150 and up.

Roboteers,

We have a wonderful opportunity to get notoriety and raise money for our club. Charter has reserved us a FREE 10x10 booth in the INDOOR Kids Zone for the duration of the Fair which opens Tuesday, July 20th and runs through Sunday, July 25th. We need volunteers to help us keep the booth manned each day from open (12 pm) to close (10 pm). Any amount of commitment will be appreciated. Volunteers will receive a pass for FREE parking and admission to the Fair on the days they volunteer. Volunteers will also be allowed to enjoy the Fair as much as possible as long as there are at least 2 people in the booth at all times. Since the number of passes may be limited, we need a minimum 5 hour commitment from each volunteer.

Either Dan or myself (or both) will be available at the Fair every day. Dan will be doing a presentation once a day on the Kids Zone stage. We will have a table in the booth that will have robotics demonstrations, videos and information about the club. We will also be hosting a robot building workshop where up to 3 walk-ins at a time can build a Lil' KicBot line following robot. The workshop will be $60 per person with the robot kit included in the price. The club will make $10 off each robot/workshop that is sold.

We will discuss other ideas at our next meeting on Saturday, July 10th, but I need a head count of volunteers in the next few days. If you want to volunteer and be guaranteed a FREE pass to the Fair, please RSVP by this Friday.

Thanks.

Notice to all SORSA members.

We have been unable to negotiate a new contract with Kids Unlimited and, therefore, will no longer be meeting at their facility. However, we have negotiated a partnership with Kid Time Discovery Experience in West Medford and will be meeting at their facility beginning with our next meeting. The times and dates will not be changing. Just the location.

Our next meeting is Saturday, July 10th at 10:00 am. Kid Time Discovery Experience is located on the corner of West McAndrews and Ross Lane. You can find a map here: http://www.discoveryspace.org/BACKUP/info/Map.html.

We are excited about our partnership with Kid Time and do not expect to have any troubles with doors being locked when we arrive as we will be meeting during their regular business hours. In exchange for meeting at their location, we have offered to help Kid Time construct a robotics exhibit for the kids. We believe this will be a great club project. We will begin brainstorming at our next meeting.

For more information about Kid Time Discovery Experience, check out their website here: http://www.discoveryspace.org/

Hope to see everyone at the next meeting.

Roboteers,

Our next meeting on Saturday, December 11th will be a pivotal meeting for the club. Three Officer positions will be open for election/re-election. The two-year terms for President and Vice President will be expiring and Treasurer position will be open due to a resignation. We encourage all members to be present at this meeting as we vote for the new officers. We also encourage members to nominate suitable candidates for the open positions. You may nominate yourself if you believe you are a suitable candidate. Nominations must be received prior to the next club meeting and will be accepted until the meeting actually begins (10:15 am).

All candidates must be of legal age (18 years). SORSA Bylaws also require that all Officers remain current on their yearly membership dues. Therefore candidates must be current with their dues or willing to become current if elected. Candidates are encouraged to familiarize themselves with SORSA's Mission Statement and Bylaws prior to the election. Candidates will be given time to speak at the meeting if they so desire as will members wishing to ask questions or voice concerns.

There is currently one nomination for each of the three positions as follows:

President - James Cooper (Coop)
Coop was an active member of the Southern Oregon Robotics Club in Grants Pass and has been an active member of SORSA for the past two years in Medford. He has also been a member of the robotics club at Southern Oregon University and organized RoboMaxx events on campus. He is currently teaching robotics courses at SOU.

Vice President - Dan Gates (re-election)
Dan was the original founder and President of the Southern Oregon Robotics Club in Grants Pass in 2001. He has been an active member since that time and has represented the club through presentations at libraries, schools, community events and on local and national television. Dan also organized three RoboMaxx events in the Rogue Valley. He is currently a partner in 1SORC Technologies, LLC which provides electronics consulting services and robotics related products.

Treasurer - Jessica Ayres
Jessica has been an active member of SORSA since May 2010. She is a Business Associate at Wells Fargo and a mother of two children, one of which is also an active SORSA member.

If you would like to nominate someone for any of these positions, please e-mail your nomination to sorobotics@... or present your nomination before 10:15 am at the next meeting on Saturday, December 11th.

ALSO at our next meeting....

We will have our annual robotics white elephant gift exchange.  It's been great to see such large turnouts lately, keep it up!

See you all at the next meeting.

This is the big Christmas exchange meeting!!!  You don't want to miss this one!  Try to be a little early so we can get the business stuff out of the way and leave plenty of time for the Robotic White Elephant exchange.

 Be sure to bring your
Robotic White Elephant gift so you can participate. This gift would be any used parts that can be made into or used in some kind of robot. Please do not bring stuff like tools or store bought robot kits. The purpose of this exchange is to get the creative juices flowing and the challenge is to build a robot using the parts you get before next years exchange.

Among the gifts that are brought will be one or two NEW robot kits. If you get one of these, you get to keep that gift as well as choose another so you can participate in the challenge.

Our meetings have been running 15 plus attendees, so this exchange meeting may take a bit longer than usual meetings.  Also remember that we'll be voting in a new president and treasurer as well as voting on the renewal of the vice president. We'll do our best to keep that portion short.

See you there... Happy Roboting!
