Hi everyone,

This is going to be a meeting you will not want to miss, even if you don't
have a robot. I expect there will be more than the usual amount of chaos
with things on the move and a camera crew roaming around.

TV 9&10 will be at the meeting to videotape "things that move". If you have
a robot or any part of a robot that can move for the camera, this is your
chance to get it on TV.

You are invited to attend the ROBOT CLUB meeting, 3/13/01, 6 PM, in the
Robotics Classroom / Lab of the M-TEC building (2600 Aero Park Drive,
Traverse City, MI).

Subject: What robotics and wireless electronics resources can help me with ...

Hi all.

A friend has been not too subtly encouraging me to try my hand at electronics lately, and I've decided to give it a shot.  He has grand plans for building all sorts of cool gadgets and devices and thinks I'd be able to help him.  Before commiting myself to the entire adventure, however, I thought I'd try a small (and hopefully not too expensive) project to get the feel for it. I'd really appreciate it if someone in this group could clue me in to some of the resources, on-line or otherwise, that might be pertinent to this project.

Essentially, I'm trying to build a wireless transmitter - receiver pair of devices.  The transmitter should be small (hand-size or smaller), and pressure-sensitive.  The receiver should be compatible with pc-devices (i.e. through a serial port).  The communications should be one-way (duh) and simple.  The transmitter should transmit an "ON" signal when pressed, and the maximum range should be about 150 ft.  That's it.

My goal is to make this thing as durable, cheap and simple to construct as possible.  This will (I hope) allow for 1) an achieveable project for a beginner, 2) extensibility, and 3) use in more complicated projects further on (e.g., repeating the project with two+ transmitters, each with their own frequency)

If anyone has done something along these lines, or knows of a good web-site, book, journal artical, person, etc. to go to, I'd appreciate it.  Also, do you think it'd be worth my while to stop by your next meeting?  I work in SF, so...

    Thanks for any help/advice.

I'm interested. I teach an electronics course at Mills College
(Oakland), where we are building robots. We could even meet at
Mills. I'm not sure Monday nights are best though.

Greetings Fellow Carbon-based Units,

Here are several San Francisco Robotics Society of Amnerica (SFRSA) robot
event updates:

(1) SFRSA members invited to TechTV series "The Screen Savers” to attend a 1
hour live TV Robot Special today, March 7, 6PM PST. The show is tentatively
scheduled to feature several SFRSA members & their machines, including John
Zeissig (FuzzKnuckles), Joe Miller (Mars Rover, Sumo Bot), Brad Smallridge
(Hand), Zach Radding (Eye), Roger Gilbertson (Robot Store items), David
Calkins & Cliff/Toni Thompson (AIBO) as well as SFRSA NASA Robotics contact
Alan Federman (USFirst Competition video clip). I've posted a note to our
SFRSA website Homepage (http://www.robots.org/).

(2) "Building Intelligent Robust Systems for Space: From the Fictional R2D2
to the Very Real S2D2 (Space Station Digital Droid)" Space Robots talk by
Yuri Gawdiak, NASA Ames Personal Satellite Assistant Project Lead, hosted by
Friends of California Air and Space Center and NASA Ames Research Center at
Space Camp California on Monday, February 26, 7:30 PM. I videotaped this
talk, which highlighted the Personal Satellite Assistant (PSA) Space Station
Robot. After the talk I discussed with Yuri the very exciting possibility
of arranging for some future SFRSA Field Trips to visit Nasa Ames main
Robotics Facility, the Intelligent Mechanisms Group (Marsokhod, Dante,
Nomad, etc), to which Yuri was very receptive. I've posted a description &
photos of Yuri's talk to our SFRSA website Events section, where it reads
"February 26, 2001 NASA Ames...Building Intelligent Robot Systems..."

(3) February 24, 2001 Chabot Space & Science Center Robotics Expo. SFRSA
was invited to attend & showed up in force. I've posted a description &
photos to our SFRSA website Events section, where it reads "February 24,
2001 Chabot Space & Science Center Robotics Expo"

(4) The Fuji Soft All Japan Robot Sumo Tournament, is coming up March 28,
2001, at the Exploratorium, with Setup/Competition at 11am/1-4pm. I've
posted a note to our SFRSA website Homepage (http://www.robots.org/).

Y'all,

A reply from SUMO Master Bill Harrison, as well as an update from
Exploratorium Technical Curator Larry Shaw at tonight's SFRSA meet, has
cleared up some confusion regards the date & time of the Fuji SUMO event.
The date & time are actually Tuesday, March 27, 2001,
Registration/Competition 12:30pm/1-5pm. I've futher learned the
Exploratorium will be webcasting the event
(http://www.exploratorium.edu/webcasts/) & that Satellite/Digital Cable
Channel TechTV (www.techtv.com) aims to attend with TV crew. I've updated
the info on the SFRSA Homepage accordingly. Thanks Bill & Larry for the
clarification.

In the rush to get prepared for the TechTV television appearance, I also
failed to add a final item in the Subject of the email, which would have
read:

Feb. meet notes

I've posted a description & photos of the meeting's highlight to our SFRSA
website Events section, where it reads "February 2001
Meeting...The...highlight was a demonstration of “Robo Lure” a mechanized
bird lure used to attract Raptors for a Birds of Prey Tracking Project,
while respecting the community’s concern over use of live bait"

Also Scott, do you live in South Bay, North Bay, East Bay or SF

layout is nice, easy, readable. Both useful, thought provoking--it puts
technology funder funding for a variety of initiatives and sectors----in
ways that are easily readable and catalytic. I like to see what others are
doing. and funding. I try to leverage the programs, achievement or models
covered to whoever might be eligible. There are grants here by technology
funders for education, literacy, digital divide, community, teaching the
math and science of technology, steppingstones to technology for children
with disabilities, women and economic development, environment,

Hello,

In May, I will graduate from U.C. Berkeley with a B.S. in
Mechanical Engineering and I am trying to find robotics companies in
the Bay Area to work for. I have taken several control systems and
mechanical design classes and am really interested in robotics. If
anyone knows of such companies or a website that has links to various
companies, could they please reply. All the companies that have come
to Berkeley are either in the chip manufacturing field (Heat
Transfer) or are such large companies that my resume simply gets put
in a database. Thank you so much.

Take Care,
Michael Homer

Hello, I'm a freshman in high school and I was
wondering if there are any summer programs that I can
go to. I would like to learn to build a robot from

Hi Julio Valencia, (Director, Space Camp California, Mountain View) et al,

Julio, nice meeting up with you again at the...

February 26, 2001 NASA Ames, California Air and Space Center (CASC), Friends
of CASC (FOCASC) & Space Camp California Presentation "Building Intelligent
Robust Systems for Space: From the Fictional R2D2 to the Very Real S2D2
(Space Station Digital Droid)" Space Robots talk by Yuri Gawdiak, NASA Ames
Personal Satellite Assistant Project Lead, hosted by Friends of California
Air and Space Center and NASA Ames Research Center at Space Camp California
on Monday, February 26, 7:30 PM.

...as reported on our San Francisco Robotics Society of America (SFRSA)
website at (http://www.robots.org/ , where it reads "Building Intelligent
Robust Systems for Space...".

Julio, after Yuri's presentation we discussed your soliciting input for
ideas on ways to teach courses in robotics & programming to kids at, (& as
part of the program for), Space Camp.

Then along came a story in the Friday, March 23, 2001 Peninsula Edition
Chronicle about a Summer Camp for kids that addresses the question "Want to
Build a Robot?...iD Tech Camps offer kids ages 8 to 13...classes
(in)...programming and robotics...(in a ) week...offering girls-only
classes...day camps and residential programs...". The story adds "...Toby
Fisher, the camp's Northern California director (notes) 'We are located at
colleges all over...including Stanford, College of Notre Dame, Santa Clara
and Menlo College...offer a 6 to 1 counselor-student ratio and each kid will
have a computer'...".

An excerpt from the iD Tech Camp's website reads "...internalDrive's
high-tech computer camp invites your child to harness the power of
technology at a university near you, this summer!...Fun and Educational teen
and kids' camps customized to each child's skill level!...You've found THE
destination for educational summer camps for children ages 8-17 for summer
2001! Our teen and kids' high-tech summer computer camps offer each child
unsurpassed high-tech fun! ...Programming & Robotics...Program games and
robots in this sophisticated computer camp program! Learn more about iD's
Programming and Robotics summer camp course now!...".

Here's the contact info:

So Julio, maybe on the day you plan to get this together you can just plug
"iD Tech Camps Programming & Robotics courses" into Space Camp California &
leave early that afternoon! Dude!

PS

-(Go Chron!;) (contact for this story is penfriday@...)

-Maybe iD Tech Camps residential programs have\can whip up custom courses
in LEGO Mindstorms (http://mindstorms.lego.com/), especially (look under
"Products" for) "Exploration Mars" & "Robots That See" & Star Wars Robots
systems "Droid Developer Kit" & "Dark Side Developer Kit"!...then again
Planetary Society "Red Rover Goes to Mars Training Mission" would be awesome
(http://planetary.org/rrgtm/Training_Mission/index.htm), not to mention
some of the other popular platforms, as covered by our very own SFRSA Past
Prez & Robot Store CEO Roger Gilbertson's Robot Store catalog
(www.robotstore.com) & our very own SFRSA World SUMO & Battlebots Champ
Carlo Bertoccini Robot Books website (www.robotbooks.com).

-This would be a nice class for Hawaiian kids, especially in Maui (!), (just
got back from 1 week vacation there...scuba'd (heard whale songs & dolphin
clicks), boated by whale pods...Great opportunities for underwater robots
to buzz, or at least amuse, the dolphins
(see http://www.robots.org/Japan/Robodex%20PCWatch%20Japan%20Translate.htm,
where it reads "...Takara, ?? joins an aquatic robot...";
& also http://www.csmonitor.com/durable/2000/03/17/p6s2.htm, where it reads
"NO FISH FOOD NEEDED..."). Hey, I may be fishing here but how about Sony
AIBO robot pet in a wetsuit? (http://www.us.aibo.com/3d/index.html)

-Anybody scalping tickets for the Richard Feynman ALL SOLD OUT! play about
Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) & Tuva ? "...I'll gladly thank you
tomorrow..."

Greetings Autonomous Ones,

Here are several San Francisco Robotics Society of America (SFRSA) robot
website (http://www.robots.org/) item updates:

(1) A new "Files" button & webpage section has been added to the SFRSA
Homepage just below the "Discuss" button (http://www.robots.org/files.htm).
UC Berkeley Robotics Lab Lab manager & SFRSA member Win Williams has
generously provided 200 MB of space for files too large to economically
store on the SFRSA site. Current files there include "K-9.mov", (the "AIBO
"K-9" vs. Thunder Lizard!" Quicktime iMovie) available for FTP download &
"SDR-3X_PROMO.mpeg", (the video of the release of the Sony AIBO Humanoid
shot by Fumihiko Abe in Japan last November at ROBODEX).

(2) The annual jointly Exploratorium-SFRSA hosted Fuji Soft sponsored All
Japan Sumo Tournament webcast archive link has been posted to the SFRSA
homepage. The event also scored a major Chronicle newspaper story & pictures
in the Wednesday, March 28, 2001 edition, entitled "Japanese Sumo Wrestling
Becomes High-Tech Fun" (link also provided).

(3) "NEC's Personal Robot Project's New Personal Robot 'PaPeRo' information
has been posted to the SFRSA Homepage, along with URL's on "iD Tech Camps -
Programming & Robotics Summer Camps!" & "FRED" (Functional Response
Emulation Devices), as well as news of a videotape of the SFRSA recent
appearance on TechTV.

Greetings Bioelectric Types,

Here's a fresh addition San Francisco Robotics Society of America (SFRSA)
robot website:

(1) In the SFRSA Links section, at the top where it reads "Pyramid Exploring
Robot's Mysterious Discovery...a German engineer named Rudolf
Gantenbrink...sent a small robot, called UPUAUT 2, up the Southern
"air-shaft" of the Queen's Chamber inside the Great Pyramid...a camera on
board had taken pictures..." (http://www.robots.org/coolstuf.htm).
