DNS only handles the IP address - you need either a host header (which
allows you to run more than 1 IIS site on port 80) or something that
will do a port direct. A http:// URL without a port number will always
try to contact port 80, an https:// URL port 443.

Bryan,

Would a DNS redirect work for this using the cname? I can't remember if
that would still want a port 80.

BTW...over the last year I have learned a ton from your posts. You have
a lot of good advice and I thought you should know that I appreciate
your work. Are you on twitter?

Typically you'd do this with a "host header" site running on port 80.
There isn't really a good way to get a friendly URL on an alternate port
without involving some sort of URL re-writing proxy like ISA.

Subject: [sharepoint] My Sites running on it's own web application..,

Hello, we'll soon be rolling out My Sites to the masses at our company.

When initially setting up SharePoint we configured My Sites to run on
its own web app (as well as its own iis web site and app pool on port
83).

This generated a URL with the port number, 83, included.

What I'm trying to do is give a My Sites web application in SharePoint
running on port 83 (also currently on its own iis site and app pool) a
more user friendly URL - i.e. the port number 83 doesn't show - when
users browse their My Sites page and all subsequent pages underneath it.

We definitely want to keep My Sites on its own SharePoint 2007 Web
Application for performance and administrative purposes.

Is this an acceptable method to display a more user friendly URL...

We created a C-name record in DNS that resolves mysitestest to the ip of
our dev Moss server.

When creating our SSP we made My Sites its own web application using a
newly created IIS site and app pool on port 83.

We'll call the My Sites web app http://servername:83/

The primary Web app is http://servername on port 80.

The AAM I create for the My Sites web app is http://mysitestest (note:
no port specified in the AAM)

After this when I go into the edit shared service provider properties
page (My Site Location URL) or the My Site Settings page (Personal site
provider) within the SSP Admin page I see the My Sites Location URL
listed as http://mysitesdev:80/

Is this approach acceptable? Could it cause any potential issues?

Cheers

hi,

i'm working on SSO where i created a Custom Provider (ISSOProvider method)
this method was implemented properly
however when i restarted the application my Central Administator was not
authenticating my credential (I'm Farm Administrator) for Operations & Appl.
Management,
since i could not understand the cause for this misbehaviour( custom
providers are disabled/Stoped) as i'm on Home tab but access blocked for
operations & App. Mang. tab.

Yes of course , You should go to this link and accept to install activex cookie
http://www.softfluent.com/wsslists.htm . After this You can synchronize excel
list with sharepoint list via context menu (right click on the table in excel
2007 and choose table then synchronize with sharepoint list. This solution is
very easy and free!

I have good news :) Yes You can synchronize list via Excel.
You must go to this site: http://www.softfluent.com/wsslists.htm
Then click: Wss Excel 2007 Tables synchronizer install
Then export list to excel , make some changes and click right button on the
table in Excel 2007
then choose table and synchronize with list

This is easy and free solution for sharepoint users!

My organization has a lot of SP sites. It's a pain to recreate new groups every
time we create a site when we want to give all staff access to a new site. Is
there any way to copy an existing site group and use it on another site, rather
than creating the group user list over and over again each time? And no, we're
not interested in creating the new sites as sub-sites of a top level; each new
site is a top level site out of necessity. We're using MOSS standard edition.
Thanks for any and all help.

What does your event view say for an error when you try? I find that
sometimes passwords expire in SharePoint before they do in Active

Hiya,

I tried dragging and dropping the wiki entries from one site directory
(http://companyweb/info) to another (http://companyweb/technical/) this morning
in order to consolidate two sites. I've previously done this without a problem
but after this move the files seem empty when I view them from the new site.
The wiki files (.asp) are there and I can open in Notebook to see some code but
can't find the content.

Is there a quick fix to this or do I need to restore from a backup? I'd rather
not have to do the restore from backup option because our tape drive stripped
it's mechanism this morning and I'm awaiting a replacement.

relatively new to sharepoint 3.0 on w2k3, but learning real fast....i can access
the site no problem if i add 192.168.1.5 to my intranet sites page, tried
pushing it out thru group policy, that aint working either, i have ntlm and
anonymous checked in iis settings, someone said on another forum that the
service account for the windows service might be incorrect, so i think that is
my problem, currently here is what i can't figure out...

i go to sharepoint central admin - ops - service accounts - hit the drop down
for windows service and all it says is select one.....why is this? i can change
the info for the web app pool but i don't want too just yet, all sharepoint
services are running fine, like i said i can access the site if i add the ip or
site name to intranet trusted sites, but i can't see touching 300 pc's, so i
know there is something wrong....i've been at other companies before when they
went live on sharepoint and the client pc's never had to be touched.....please
help.....

I understand there are hard limits of users per SP group, but does anyone know
if there is a hard limit of SP Groups per Site Collection?

I am a newbie in Sharepoint developement.

I need to upload to my sharepoint site some photographs taken with my mobile
cam. Probably, I will the user to introduce a form with some data, and attach
the images before sending.

Can anyone suggest me on how to begin with this project?
- Windows Mobile... which version?
- How to program the form... in mobile or asp.net?
- How to connect the form with the sharepoint site?

Thanks!
Karl

Folks,

Being new to SharePoint, we found that we were being asked for login
credentials every time we opened a document from a document library
(even after already logging into the site). We found how we can
configure the browser to automatically pass credentials to alleviate
that problem (by adding *.rochester.edu to "Trusted Sites" and selecting
the "Automatic Logon with current user name password" option in the
Custom security zone). This solution only works for IE (although I have
heard rumor that there is a Firefox add-in) and is also a potential
support hurdle for consumers of the site. It's also a problem for
people who might be using a public PC - whereas the credentials passed
to SharePoint are different from that actual machine user.

It seems like there would/should be a way for SharePoint to use the
credentials that a user has logged into the site with - to also grant
them access to documents.

I plan to call Microsoft and ask them what our options are, but before
doing so I wanted to reach out to you folks to see if you have already
found answers to this issue.

Thoughts?

Steve

As you knew, FAQ is a very important part of your website to serve
existing customers and engage new clients.

Recently I am using a tool to build a dynamic FAQ page on my
website(http://www.orderartwork.com/faq.htm)..
http://www.silkwise.com/content/viewthread_thread,14737

I found it is cool: takes me a few minutes to install and has
search, post question and other functionalities.Do you have better ideas of
using it to unlock the power of FAQ?

Thanks,
Jool.
