Hi,

I'm trying to implement a functionality that  allows user to click on a button and the application scrolls down to a  predefined position... kind of like <a href="#Chap9"> in HTML

verticalScrollPosition property of a container allows changing y coordinate of the origin of the viewport. This part works fine but the application's scrollbar doesn't move as the new value is assigned to verticalScrollPosition property.

Any idea how to access the application's scrollbar and move it to a specific position using ActionScript?

Hi Keith,

AFAIK, Octoshape's plugin is the only 3rd party plugin that's out there.  Don't think its open for all yet. No word if it will ever be.

The octoshape plugin is used by cnn's live video streaming service too. I came across this last year on cnn's site. Emmy Huang, product manager for Flash player at adobe wrote this - http://blogs.adobe.com/emmy/archives/2008/12/improving_live.html back then.

If you sign up for NBA League Pass, you get a prompt from within Flash to install a plugin supplied by a third-party, namely the “Octoshape Grid Enhancement plugin”. It goes ahead and does a download and launches a native installer.

The mechanism has actually been there for a while but Octoshape is the first time that Adobe has allowed a third-party to distribute software this way.

Here’s more background:

From the sound of it and the commentary from Adobe reps, it’s likely that the client uses some kind of verification or signing so that arbitrary people can’t take advantage of this thing, but it would be interesting to get confirmation on how this works.

You can do this using the new TextLayoutFramework (although it will require Flash 10). Your other option would be to listen to mouse and keyboard events on a textfield.

Hello,

Would anyone know of any existing component, or can suggest an implementation approach, for a text-based Flex component that dispatches some sort of event when a portion of the text is selected.

I need a component that can show text (text field, text input, label, text area, etc) and dispatch an event if when a portion of its text value is selected/highlighted by the user.

My research has so far come up with a cut, copy, paste, and selectAll events, but not one for a partial text select.

I'm thinking of the following approach: add event listeners for mouse down and mouse up positions.  Then based on these, determine the text that is most likely highlighted/selected.

Thanks,
Henry

You can probably leverage the enterFrame or render events, although performance may be affected. You also could use mouseUp/mouseDown and keyUp/keyDown. Too bad there is not a specific event for this.

Thanks,
Henry

Check out the TextField component. It gives you access to selectionBeginIndex and selectionEndIndex.

All around the flex employment market seems confusing. It seemed that before the recession, it was an employees market just because not enough people knew Flex well or had too much experience due largely to when it was adopted commercially.

Now it seems that while more time has passed for there to be a larger pool of flex developers and some of those developers are now in the market due to being laid off, that many filters (even when they sort of make sense) are being created by some companies in their hiring process. Is that a recipe for leaving jobs openings open for a long time? Or has the market changed that drastically (well that Adobe layoff didn't help)?

And then the other glaring question is: Let's say they find enough "goldilocks candidates" here in the beautiful SF Bay Area, how many of them want to move to a far less hip city like Phoenix and it's 100F+ temperatures?

The goldilocks principle basically means that the only viable option must be between two extremes, in this case the extremes are: (a) currently employed but not for long enough, which would make you a job hopper, and (b) unemployed for "a while", which would mean you suck somehow. So Josh was saying that the company is basically asking people to lie on their resumes if they fall into either one of those categories, otherwise they won't even be considered for the position.

Disqualifying developers who've been "laid off for a while" seems ethically marginal at best. Also, not a criterion I would include in a candidate filter, whether I was going to make it public or not.

You can use the framework runtime shared library.  If you use the signed version, it is cached in the player cache.  All instances of Flex that use the same version of the library will use the library in the cache, so they will load quickly.

Now that I've been laid off from Adobe (along with 700 others), I would like to seek Flex consulting opportunities, and one possibility is with web designers/developer s wishing to offer their clients value added components.

My question is that I heard you don't want for example three separate Flex apps on one web page, as it results in three instances of the Flash Player generated, or something like that.

So is it necessary to group multiple Flex components into one Flex app to each web page? This can limit placement of Flex components on a web page, because the web page will not be completely done in Flex, as the page must be searchable.

Any insight on this, particularly from Alex and others on the Flex product team at Adobe.

$0.02:

It's not necessarily that you shouldn't. Yes, it does result in 3 instances of Flash Player, but there's nothing uniquely bad about that--it's a question of resources. The more of anything you have on a web page, the more you need to worry about load time, memory consumption and application responsiveness; all three will be degraded each time you add a Flex app to a web page, but how badly will vary greatly from app to app.

I've seen a page with half a dozen Flex apps; it was really bad, by all measures. But I also know for a fact that two or three simple, lightweight ones can play together very nicely on the same page. If you have all the apps already, it shouldn't take much to throw them on the same page and see; I'll take measurement over prediction any time.

If you don't... well, I'd approach it this way: I'd sum up my best prediction of each app's complexity, network usage (loading static resources, transferring data, etc) and level of interactivity (whatever's going to make the player work for a living instead of just sitting there)--and also whether any of those measures (or the number of apps) are likely to uptick in the useful life of this version of the page--and if that all came out to anywhere north of "light" I'd seriously consider alternatives.

Interested to hear others' take on the question.

- Chris

PS: Obviously performance optimization is a key piece of that endeavor, but that's a big subject for another day (and not one that I claim any particular expertise in).

2. A correction to the setup instructions - you should install ColdFusion Builder Beta as a standalone, not as a plugin to an existing Flash Builder Beta (or Eclipse) install. People on Windows have experienced crippling problems installing it as a plugin (hey, it's installing a beta plugin into beta software, people), and while it seemed to work on my Mac, the best bet is just do it as a standalone. It'll be a heavier load on your system and you won't have the convenience of just being able to switch perspectives, but that's better than not being able to use it.

If you've already installed CF Builder as a plugin, never fear; you can just re-run the same installer and select "Standalone". You don't even need to uninstall the plugin version first. Easy pleasey.

3. Speaking of those setup instructions, you are going to go through them all before coming, right? Including the MySQL setup, right? We'll be on site at 8:30, ready to help people who've encountered difficulties with the setup, but it'll go a long way towards avoiding downtime for the whole session if you've already done the setup beforehand.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have, including any difficulties with setup. We (roundpeg) did the same session on Tuesday in Newport Beach and it was great. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have, including any difficulties with setup. We (roundpeg) did the same session on Tuesday in Newport Beach and it was great. I haven't done much CF development in the last, oh, decade or so, but CF 9 and CF Builder have some amazing new tools (Hibernate integration, code generation, full remoting support, and a lot more) that are really making me look at it again as a viable application development platform.

Hope to see you there,
Chris Luebcke
