Great meet last night!
Hey guys, that was a great meet last night! Was good
to meet you all,
looking forward to the next one. And kudos to Tom and Jennifer for
setting that up.
I forgot the name; who was the fellow that was asking about the FLash 8
to FLash 9 move?
From my perspective there seemed like a good number of people who are
there to learn more about what Flex is. So it'd probably be a good idea
to start from fresh with the basics and work your way up. Wes Leonardo
who was there last night helped train a bunch of our developers, so he
may be able to conduct a few of those.
There was also a number of Coldfusion folks; so CF+Flex
seems like a
good series.
It was good to meet everyone. As I said,
please feel free to toss around ideas for talks by the Flex team. We have a
lot of information already out there so I don’t know how interested you
are in repeats, but if there’s something new that you’re dying to
learn more about I will see what I can do. Obviously not something we’ll
do every meeting, but a few a year seems possible.

Hi all,
My name is Richard Bennion from Broadchoice, Inc. www.broadchoice.com
I was not able to attend last night's meeting, but I will be there next
time for sure!
Our company has been developing applications with
Allaire/Macromedia/Adobe Coldfusion for 8 years now.
We also work with Flash a bunch.
Flex + CF is, for us, the holy grail!
We are already working on porting over interfaces to our CF apps with
Flex.
If anyone out there is a AS2.0/3.0 guru and is up to speed from Flex, I
would love to hear from you.
I am glad you had a great first meeting and will see you all soon.
Best,
rb

Unfortunately I can't make it tonight as I'm car-less in Berkeley, but I'm
looking forward to
any future meetings in the city.
I've been lurking in this group for a while now, looking forward to getting
involved with
the group and learning more about Flex... I'm 100% Flash these days but I'm
excited about
expanding horizions.
Best of luck with meeting #1!

Yes, going forward we will be giving more notice about the
meetings and we will be picking a permanent location. The meeting
planning for this meeting was rushed do to cross-promotion
opportunities.
There is free visitor parking at the Adobe building, for those who want
to know. And the walk from the CalTrain station is about 5 minutes,
according to Sean.

Sorry I'll miss this (have to be in the SF office tomorrow).
I've
gotten a bit behind on the group emails - was there a decision on the
location alternating between SJ and SF? Will we also get more notice
about location in future (so I can plan to be in the appropriate
office that day).
Really looking forward to learning more about Flex at these meetings!

Event Location: TBD Notes:
The SilVaFug meeting. Come out and be heard.
We are excited to announce that will we be giving away one free
admission to a Flex 2 Training session by roundpeg. If you want
to get up to speed on Flex 2, this is going to be your best bet!
Jennifer will also be bringing along some other cool gifts to give away.

demo of it as there will be mashup camp attenders visiting our first
meeting.
Vision: 20/20 (weak eye muscles though, that require glasses when reading stuff, else i fall asleep!)
Skill Set: walking, talking, eating, and *censored*
Accomplishments: Won an award for best construction paper pumpkin in the 3rd grade. It was my first mashup. I looked at everyone's pumpkin and copied the pieces I liked.
Good enough? =)
In all seriousness, here's some answers:
Vision: I was hoping the group would help come up with that. I'd be the "User Group Manager", not the "User Group Dictator". (In other words, I'm not going to let you be a fly on the wall at meetings. You're there to interact. We're not a sitcom! Though it may seem like it at times, I'm sure.)
A few things I'd like to setup would be a networking group within the UG, i.e. we know who everyone is and who they work for. If we need something and a member's company provides it, we can go to them and get some answers. I'd like to eventually create a mini-flexcoders within our own group, since the noise level on flexcoders is so high. We, as a group, should also take on projects (
i.e. the UG website (silvafug.org) and maybe donate some time/energy to helping some non-profit orgs update their websites).
Skill Set: Worked with Flex since it started, CF since 4.5, Flash since 5.0, experience in building teams, have attended several User Groups to see what works and what doesn't. Am proficient in some creative apps to make things somewhat interesting on the site (via design, movies, etc.)
Accomplishments: Not sure what you're looking for. I've published articles on CNET's Builder.com. I'm certified in Flex 1.5. I'm an accomplished editor. I built a RIA with flash, since flex wasn't around back then. AFAIK, I'm the only person working with Jennifer to get things rolling and nailed down for the first meeting. =) <-- that last one is pretty important, ask Jennifer!
Oh, I know, I used to host some mean parties in my bachelor pad when I was a bachelor. They still talk about them years later! LOL
Hope that helps. Maybe I should make some "Vote for Tom" buttons and T-shirts? =)
One thing to be careful of when selecting a location is that half of the people voted for a San Francisco location and people in San Francisco are less likely to have cars, so wherever the meeting is, it needs to be easily accessible by public transit. I know of one person who voted for SF sold his car as soon as he moved here. :)
Yup. Yahoo Groups has a voting feature; but I vote we do it at SJ or eBay's Silicon VAlley Conf center if some of you ebay folk can swing that, and demo the cool Flex stuff going on there. :)
One of guys on my staff, Wes Leonardo (Wes you on this list yet?), gave a series of training presentations to our other developers. One particular one was on item renderer's and item editors.

Since I'm the Interim Manager, I'm making the executive decision to go
with the location that
garnered the most votes. Sure there were multiple votes, etc, but it
had the highest count. Hopefully, we can still meet there.
The more I think about it, the more I think we should do the first
meeting without the Flex Team. There will be a lot of housekeeping
matters we'll have to deal with in regards to the User Group. Plus, I
think more of the flex team will be back (and more refreshed) in August
for our second meeting. Maybe you could round find out by August where
the team would prefer to meet: Adobe SJ or Adobe SF.
When and where will the meeting be? Sorry, been pretty swamped
and
haven't paid too much attention but there may be folks who can come.

That’s fine with me, plus you can
figure out if there’s something specific you’d like from us that’s
better in person.
Flex team will always prefer San Francisco I think,
none of us work out of the SJ office.

To simplify matters before it gets to crazy, will all those still interested in particpating in the Silicon Valley Flex User Group please join the appropriately named silvafug group at yahoo? Just click this link. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/silvafug/join
Also, so I can get you past the moderation phase of being new members. Please send a message to the new group with what you want the first meeting to be about. Kill two birds with one stone! The ideas can be for one time coverage or a regular feature of the meeting.
If you have anything for the group that you haven't added yet, please do so in the new group. I'll be tranferring all files from the old group to the new one. I thought about reposting the messages too, but it'll look weird as they'll all be by me. Therefore, I decided not to. If you posted something important in the past and feel it should be in the new group, then please repost.
