Seeking a full-time contract position for phase 1 of a development project
creating a UI for an iPad app.

Boulevard R built one of the first financial services Flex applications
(February 2007) that engages consumers and helps them plan out their financial
goals. Our current iteration of the application helps consumers effectively
save more within their retirement plans, so if you're motivated by working on a
project addressing a real social problem, this would be a great gig.

We need to build our UI in FB 4.5 so that we can deploy our application on the
iPad. You can work almost entirely remotely, but it's a big plus if you're
located in the Bay Area, since that's where other members of the team are also
based. You will be fully supported by the senior Flex developers (both members
of Silvafug!) who built the original app using Flex 3.

Ideally you'll have already built a mobile application using FB 4.5, even better
if it's for the iPad. Excellent references will be important, since this
application is critical for us.

We're looking for developers who are staying very current with their FB skills
and understand how to work efficiently with this new version. Also, UI design/
UX skills are a plus, but the user interactions have been largely mapped out
already.

This is a short term project that could turn into something more long-term for
later versions of the software (online Dashboard, analytics interface, etc.).

Project Scope:

- Build the screens and user interaction that tie in with our API, outlined in
these mockups (you can download onto GoodReader for your iPad and actually tap
the screens to get a feel for interactivity) :
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11617267/iPad%20app%20for%20Retiremap_updated%20with%20f\
ull%20goals.pdf

and to get a feel for the user interactions that happen within the Flex app,
demo our current web-based version:
www.boulevardr.com/goals/Company1

- Make sure the results charts and the calculations are compatible with the data
objects

Skills Needed:
- Flex 4.5
- Swiz framework

Compensation:
Competitive ($75+/hour), based on experience

Hey everyone,

Been a fun couple of years, but I need to step down from SilvaFUG North. I've been tied-up with my start-up since summer and it will continue require my full attention for some time to come.

When I got involved with SilvaFUG, I felt that Flash & Flex were under-represented and that we need to hear more direct from the source.  Fast-foreward to today: we now have several Flash & Flex meetings at Adobe SF each month and tons of useful info being shared with the community.

With so many groups, this narrows SilvaFUG's focus back to core Flex concerns. As a UI designer / developer, this requires a deeper focus that lies outside my expertise. You guys deserve someone who understands and can relate to that focus.

Keith & Shanky are working on finding a replacement manager for SilvaFUG North.

There's only one more SilvaFUG meeting this year (November) and then there's the XMas party in Dec. If we don't have my replacement by next month, don't fret - it will be done certainly by January's meeting.

My sincerest thanks to everyone who has helped with SilvaFUG. Big up to Universal Mind for sponsoring SilvaFUG North. And a big double-up Keith for letting me run a little wild.

Cheers!

We built our Flex application using Amazon's EC2 and S3 and need to hire a
systems operations contractor to update the servers and prevent outside entities
from gaining access to our resources. This person or team must have experience
maintaining Linux servers

Can you recommend a service provider or system integrator (local in the Bay

the servers up to date?

Thanks!

I suppose most of you are probably following the news, but after a couple days of awkward radio silence, Adobe has finally released a statement on the future of Flex:

http://blogs.adobe.com/flex/2011/11/your-questions-about-flex.html

The short of it is, they're giving it over to an open source foundation after 4.6 ships later this month.

I'm a little verklempt; please, discuss amongst yourselves.

This looks very similar to what Netflix tried to pull. Define product of the future, go for it, drop "old" technology. The problem? Way too soon and the customers are not quite ready for it. It ended up being a mess for Netflix and it will end up being a mess for Adobe. People will stop trusting them cut their losses and move on.

I agree that sometime in the future html5 will end up replacing most of the flash apps but we are so not ready. What about all the old browsers that can't support html5? What about all the big corporations that are years behind with their system upgrades? Call me a dreamer but the way I always envisioned flex working was to have an option to build a release for either html5 or flash. That way you'd be able to support older browser while moving forward with the newest trend. Adobe would keep the developers happy while slowly moving towards html5...

That's the thing, it is impossible to replicate what you can do in Flex using HTML/CSS/JS at least for another couple of years. My thinking is no one knows how the next few years will play out, all too often the promise of the latest greatest technoflavor doesn't work out quite as evangelized (especially when it involves the cooperation of browser makers). Flex works, now, and now the community (which will include very large enterprise users of the SDK) can drive the quality and content of the Flex SDK. There is huge potential here if you get involved! Check out and join SpoonProject at http://www.spoon.as/

The next SilvaFUG meetings (tentatively Dec 6 and 8) will be to discuss Spoon and to elect some new SilvaFUG managers for San Francisco (Radley stepped down a month ago) and San Jose (Shanky has stepped down at the same time). The Adobe announcement on the Official Flex Blog means transitioning the Flex SDK into an Apache Project following which Spoon is working on incorporating SIGNFICANT contributions from several Fortune 500 companies and the best Flex-minds in the world, this will involve a lot of work and to make it work they need your help.

The important thing is to not give in to the 'Flash is Dead' brainless FUD going around. Anyone who thinks Flash Player 11 with Stage3D is not 3+ years ahead of HTML5 is not paying attention. While gaming and video will keep Flash alive and improving that gives Flex a fantastic environment to excel in. Remember Flex was invented to build applications on Flash 5/6 - imagine an application on Stage3D - something to work towards.

I am interested to see what we could do beyond HTML5

Flex Developer
Engineering | San Jose, CA, United States

We are a rapidly-growing Silicon Valley start-up that is redefining
the way people save and share their most valued possession – their
photos. Our team is driven by a passion for product, people and the
perfect customer experience. Over 5 million people have used us, and
90% of our customers are actively recommending us to family and
friends. We are not just another start-up: we are profitable, our
revenues are growing 700% per year, and we’re just getting started.

Role:
This is not your typical Flex programming role – we are a complex Flex
application with many highly technical components. We are looking for
someone who is a well-rounded computer scientist in addition to a Flex
developer. This would be demonstrated by a CS degree, knowledge of
more traditional programming environments or projects that show deep
engineering ability. We love to see candidates who have worked on
impressive Flash applications that they can demonstrate for us. We
favor candidates who can show us they have a keen product sense and
will contribute good ideas for improving the product.

• Launch new features, improvements and usability to our core Flex
platform application.
• Develop and improve our Flash widgets for viewing and sharing photo products.
• Balance innovative new features with performance and speed for
optimal user experience.
• Building custom components for use throughout the editor.
Qualifications:

• B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent. 2 – 3 years flex development
with ActionScript 3 and Flash Builder.
• Familiar with design patterns and component lifecycle development;
unit testing a plus.
• Passionate. Driven. High achiever. You challenge yourself and
everyone around you to excellence.
• Extremely hard working. You should be ready to make our Company a
priority in your life.
• Enjoy diversity and individualism; from flip-flops to foosball,
suits to shorts @ Our Company it is about being who you are in our
team-oriented, work hard – play hard environment.

Life at Our Company
We are a fun, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where your
contribution is not defined by your title but by the amazing work and
passion that you bring to the table - it’s a meritocracy. You will
work with people who are like-minded, passionate, and at the top of
their game.

We’re a start-up that offers all the same benefits you’d find at the
Bay Area’s hottest companies: medical/dental/vision coverage, 15 days
paid time off, and all the shiny goodies you need to get your job
done: a brand new Mac laptop and a big flat-screen monitor. More
importantly, every employee is an owner - you will receive meaningful
equity in the company.
