Great meet last night!
Hey guys, that was a great meet last night! Was good
to meet you all,
looking forward to the next one. And kudos to Tom and Jennifer for
setting that up.
I forgot the name; who was the fellow that was asking about the FLash 8
to FLash 9 move?
From my perspective there seemed like a good number of people who are
there to learn more about what Flex is. So it'd probably be a good idea
to start from fresh with the basics and work your way up. Wes Leonardo
who was there last night helped train a bunch of our developers, so he
may be able to conduct a few of those.
There was also a number of Coldfusion folks; so CF+Flex
seems like a
good series.
(Sorry for the delay in post, but I had to do a little travel and catch up with the family)
We got off to a late start as we had to wait for Jennifer. She was worth the wait though, for without her we would've been scheduleless and most likely lost.
After Jennifer welcomed the group and mentioned our fabulous sponsor (roundpeg), the meeting got underway. I gave a brief and somewhat butchered overview of flex and its price points to those that were unfamiliar with Flex. Then, in the spirit of mashup camp, I also briefly demonstrated a few mashups built on Flex.
Once presentations were over, the Group part of the meeting kicked in. I have to say I'm proud of our user interaction. I've been attending a lot of UG meetings to prep for ours and at a lot of those meetings, the group never utters a peep. At ours, everyone stood up, gave their name, workplace, what they do for a living and what they'd like to do with Flex. All was fine until I tried to venture outside my core competency. Thinking I could turn up the mics in the room to better hear the group, I started hitting buttons on the multimedia console during Clint's intro (Sorry, Clint!). If you think "Satellite" stands for satellite mics in the room, that would be a negative. It means satellite TV, which is very loud by default or so it seems. Once Jennifer and Matt came over to help me save face, we continued along with the intros.
The three themes I got from the group were: Gettin' Flex Newbies up to Speed, Build Better Interfaces, and Do Cool Projects.
Tackling the first will be easy as pie within our group. I'm putting a call out for some beginner/intro to flex presentations. This should be easy for those of us with flex experience, i.e. those currently getting paid for to Flex at work. If you fit that category, email me your availability and your proposed topic. I'll try to string them into a cohesive study timeline for the next several meetings.
Build Better Interfaces is a bit tougher. I personally feel that you don't need Flex skills to know how to build a better interface. If you don't have Flex skills but do feel you have good interface skills, feel free to contact me and I'll schedule you in. I'm also going to try to contact some interface peeps outside of the Flex realm to come and give us the skinny on this phat topic.
Do Cool Projects is an interesting one. If you start a cool project (paid or personal), I'd say give a brief little pitch and recruit some help. Or if you don't want help but find yourself slackin', just tell us about it so you can recharge your excitement about the project. I find that talking about a project can sometimes get you back into the swing of things.
After intros, we had an open forum where we could chat about whatever we want. Curtis Hermann spoke about whether or not to force his users to update to Flash Player V. 9. The group gave their take on the matter. It was interesting to hear everyone's view. Curtis, feel free to restate your dilemna to the board for even more feedback.
Esria (http://esria.com/), i.e. the Canadian Imports, talked about their company and the projects they need help on. Ben/Clint, feel free to post about your need for help if you still have it.
Throughout the meeting, we picked on the Adobe rep (Matt Chotin). We tried to get secrets from him (none were gotten). We gave him a hard time about FB2 not being on mac yet (FB2 on PC only is better than no FB2 at all). Matt was a good sport and a fun addition to the meeting.
I almost forgot about the giveaway! We gave away some nice Adobe schwag and a sure-to-be-awesome Flex 2 training session from our sponsor, roundpeg. The winners list is: Clint Modien - Adobe Pens
David Galbi - Adobe Bottle
Paul Kenny - Adobe Hat
Ben Luzyk - Adobe Hat
Brendan Meutzner - roundpeg Flex 2 Training (With 3 of the 5 prizes, twas a good night to be Canadian!)
I think that's about it. If I've forgotten anything, I'm sure the attendees will point it out. =) Oh, I know. If you work for or are a corporation, we're looking for sponsoships for upcoming meetings. We need a grand prize giveaway sponsor (of any value) and a food/drink sponsor ($75 value).

We're ramping up the JamJar site to store:
- Contacts
- Links
- Next Meeting info
- Meeting Notes
- Images from meetings (I'll bring the camera next time)
Access to JamJam seems to be based on an invite system. So, email me if
you're interested in access to the SilVaFug JamJar site. I imagine the
basic info will still be maintained on the main website, so it's totally
optional.
I give up - I can't see how to find or join a space. The nav/help appears to be aimed at those creating spaces and inviting others. After signing in, I tried the URL below, and it said "unable to open space".
But if I understand correctly, each space is limited to 20 users? Total? Is that enough for SilVaFug right now?
Plus I think I saw that since it's in beta, they aren't necessarily going to save your data if/when it launches. Plus it requires Flash 9.
But it looks really cool, seriously.
Nancy

Actually, in playing around with this.. I think you can just click on this to join:
Hi Nancy, try now, I did an actual invite to you. It's a beta product,
so there are some issues with it. In testing it out it took me awhile
to add another one of my own accounts onto it (to test it out), I had
that same error as you (unable to open space). I also tried using it's
Flickr integration, and that didn't work either (seems to work now
though).
I saw that Mike Potter on his blog put a link to join his jamjar - so I
assumed you can have anyone just join with that link. But it seems
specific emails need to be invited.
I don't know if JamJar will be something we can use long term; I think
Tom just wanted to try it out and see if it's viable. In the long run
perhaps installing FarCry on www.silvafug.org is the way to go.
Flash 9: You'll definitely want to upgrade since Flex 2 also requires
Flash 9.

Got it, signed up, added my name to the contact list, if only to try the editing feature. Very nice, better than a wiki where you have to click a button to get to an edit page. It seemed a bit slow to respond to clicks on the shared pages but not worse than early ajax implementations. And better in that it didn't cause the browser to hang.
Thanks Tariq,
Nancy

This is to give everyone a heads up about the next meeting. We were
slow to go on the first, but we've learned our lessons. The second
meeting is shaping up to be an awesome event.
To give the Flex team some more time to recover from the release and
vacations, we'll be postponing our Meet The Team at Adobe SF office
until September.
The August meeting is going to be a roundpeg/silvafug event! The
meeting space will be at roundpeg's HQ in San Francisco. Address and
directions can be found at their site (
http://www.roundpeg.com/home.cfm?main=company&content=contact ).
I've already been in talks with roundpeg and let's just say the
excitement for the August event is high.
We're looking at having a general meeting session and also some break
out groups. One possibility would be to get a "Beginner's" session
and an "Advanced" session going concurrently. There will be a lab
with machines available for these sessions. I just wanted to pass the
idea by the group and see if it was something that interests you all?
Oh, also, if you couldn't make it to the first meeting and felt bad
for missing out on the grand prize, no worries. The kind folks at
roundpeg have decided to give out yet another free seat of training!
More info on the meeting is to come, but it looks like it's going
to be a great event, so save the date!
Thanks,
Tom
I don't see it when I sign in either, but I swear it was there when I left.

The event plans sound great so far... looking forward to making it to the second
event.
I'd certainly throw in my vote for a beginner's session, also anything related
to developing
Flex on OSX with the current SDK as a side topic if there are many (or any)
people using
the Mac to develop.

The JamJar team looked and it appeared the
space was deleted. Technically only Tom as the creator is capable of doing so,
anyone else hitting delete should just unsubscribe from the space. Sorry, not
much more info. I guess go ahead and re-create and then you can duplicate the
space to keep a backup around.

My apologies if you thought I was insinuating that you
did something
to it. I was thinking more along the lines of that it was the beta
crew that mucked with it. =)
Regardless, the only reason I was asking so that we could go back and
rebuild it. Would be a bummer to have to rebuild, but that's the risk
of using beta stuff.
Thanks,
Tom

I know we're all Flexers here, or soon to be Flexers. Therefore, I thought I'd share this little discovery I made today. If you work with trees, you'll know why this is an exciting find. If you haven't used trees yet, save this for when you do. LOL
As promised, the next meeting for Silvafug is looking to be a good one. Here's the tentative schedule for the evening, tentatively scheduled for 7 to 9 pm. (Would a 7:30 to 9:30 work better?)

As you can see, if you're new to Flex and want to get a jumpstart, this is the meeting to go to. If you're "beyond" the Beginner level, don't worry, we still want you! With one instructor/speaker, we'll need the "advanced" members of the group to walk around and help out the newbies. It'll be a great chance to help out the group and get to know each other.
The Intro to Flex speaker slot is open. If we don't get a volunteer, yours truly will be at the podium. If no one steps up, no complaining as you were warned! =)
roundpeg, our meeting sponsor, is going all out. They're providing the meeting facilities, the lab with 12 computers, the food and yet another FREE TRAINING SEAT! You'll get a taste of the roundpeg Breeze-style training during the second session.
To make sure there's enough food and chairs, we're asking you to RSVP to fugrsvp@... or to my email. Please make the subject line, "8/10 RSVP". In the email body, include the following info: # of people the RSVP is for, whether you'll have your own laptop, and time preference (if any).
I'm sure there will be other items to discuss and I'll bring them to the group beforehand so you can come with answers. If you have something your dying to bring up now, run it by me (if your shy) or post it to the group to get feedback.

Where is the meeting? (I know you said RoundPeg but that doesn't tell
me much, I'm afraid, and the information is not on the SilvaFug site).

Has the time been confirmed yet?
The Silvafug website still doesn't show this meeting, BTW.
See folks on Thursday!
Sean
Interested in working on a cutting-edge, Flex-based, "Web 2.0" project?Interested in building one of the first Apollo apps from the ground up? Adobe's Kiwi team (see our blog) is currently interviewing candidates for a senior engineering position. If you've got solid Java/OO skills (Flex experience is obviously a plus) and live in the SF Bay Area, we want to hear from you! You can find the job description posted here (search for "kiwi", then click on "Computer Scientist").
Sorry, folks. I was out this weekend picking up my family! I'm back now.
Yes, the confirmed meeting time is 7 pm. The website (
http://www.silvafug.org ) has been updated with time, location, etc.
Which reminds me, we'll be delegating the website responsibilities
soon, so bring your ideas to the meeting.
I'll be travelling up to the meeting from eBay North, i.e. San Jose
Airport area. I fit 5 snug, 4 comfortably in my car. I'd appreciate
at least one carpooler, so I can diamond lane it up to the city.
Have any questions or comments, just post em!
Thanks,
Tom

Jsut an FYI,
you will make much better progress up to the city on
280, rather than 101, at that time.
