Glad it worked out. Seeing it on XP, it was slightly different,
but still close enough to get you in the ball park.
For a minute, I thought I was from Boston...

Peek in the case and see if the MotherBoard has a model number.
If you have a manual, see if it either has a picture of the jumpers,
or instructions for clearing the BIOS. (The password will clear too.)

As discussed recently, this is a major problem with a LAPTOP since
they are so easily lost and stolen.
But it is fairly easy with *most* desktops. (Except newer ones.)
You just need the proper instructions. A model number would go a long
way with helping us to get you those instructions.

Most shops could do this fairly cheap, if it came to that...
(Plus, you will have to reconfigure the BIOS settings from their "defaults"
after you were done clearing it.)
If you get a shop, have them change the CMOS battery and do the
"whole thing" at once. (That would save money in the long run.)

Hello~

There are numerous hacking password retrievals that you can download or pay for.
Your best bet is to re-install the operating system. If you don't have the $$ to
buy the operating system (Windows XP, Vista, 7) then I would recommend the
password recovery tools. Here is a link to some of them:

You have to disconnect power, open the case if it's a tower or a desktop and
look for the CMOS battery(it's small white) looks like a quater $.

You can loctate it arount the middle or the on the side on the MB,
remove it gingerly with a small screw drive. Then put it back on the MB, reboot
and then your BIOS/CMOS will reset bypassing the password.

If you cannot do that and you are not savvy, take it to a PC technichian who
will do it for you.

I don't really want to know all of that about all the possible scenarios but it
is a distinction Jer needs to think about - i.e. just what exactly is this
"Acer" upgrade disk and what should I do to install it. You would need to know
what it is and what it isn't , eh? And inquire Acer to that end.

This is an impossible technical discussion.
Even IF we leave the legal parts out of it.

Windows allows too many unknown variables, (their biggest strength
and weakness), and the Channel type OEMs continue in the same way by
all doing things differently. ..

I would LOVE to get my hands on a bunch of different OEM upgrade
DVDs, but that is unlikely to happen, especially anytime soon...

   Sounds like a sorting problem. I'm on a Win7 Laptop, so I'm
doing this from memory. Open your e-mail.
Right click on a column header. That should open a customize dialog.
Add the columns you want to see.
After you have them, Put your mouse on the edges of the column headers and
drag them to the width you want.
Drag the different columns from the center to either side to place them in the
left to right order you want.
Click on the different headers to change the sorting.
   (Ascending or descending.)
Try this to see if it makes sense. It is a little had to describe,
So I hope it was clear.

Side note, this works in all types of places where there are columns.

I bought an Acer desktop about a month ago with vista.
Part of the deal was that it would upgrade to win7.

The upgrade disks came a couple of days ago.

I started the upgrade about 25 HOURS ago.
The machine says it is collecting files and settings.
It says it is 88 percent done but it has been at 88 for 4 hours.

As anybody else seen this?
I don't see anything I can do - if I turn off the machine I bet it won't
boot up in vista.

Next time I will just wait and buy a win7 machine.

This can happen whenever the system is compromised by spyware or malware. The
same thing happens when trying to install updates or any of the Windows hotfix
files and/or service packs.

IMO your option at this stage is to do a system recovery to the original Vista
and then install the Win7 upgrade.
Hopefully you've heeded the warnings and you have made backups of your personal
stuff - the stuff that one can lose on just such an occasion as this one.

You might also run the decrappifier prior to upgrading to 7, and again after the
upgrade:
"PC Decrappifier how-to"
d-computer/) or http://bit.ly/5S9Ul

yes -how true - but my main point about the upgrade disks is that I am not sure
you can depend on the manufacturer to add onto the disk anything else you mike
require. Unlike recovery disks which include the new drivers.

While the disks may be keyed to a bios chip ( or sumthin' else) they usually
don't add any update functionality for driver and vendor specific add on's.

The only thing I know about this "for sure" is we will never know
anything "for sure" without seeing each manufacturers disks
individually and doing a forensic examination of them.
(I don't plan on doing that BTW, <grin>)

It is mind boggling how much effort they put into trying to prevent
casual copying of the OS (to multiple computers).

This is the same conversation we get into about the Win-OS license
types in general. It is boring and confusing and goes nowhere.

I was hoping you looked at Gmail for the Thunderbird settings.
Here they are for the archives, other members, or in case you still
have the program installed:

Hi Rick,

always using .mp3 files.

Maybe I could explain, my friend is having a Christmas Party which is
mainly for Linedancers. She will be using my laptop and itunes with a
preselected playlist of approx 80 songs.

Each track is for one linedance, she will be on the floor using her radio
microphone and will need approx 10secs after each track to "call in" the
next track without moving off the dancefloor.

So basically she just wants to press play on the laptop and be in another
location when the music is playing through until the end.

Hoping this will help you.

thanks,
Brian

Ricks advice is good.

However , and this may not be applicable with OEM software but since probably
most of them are outsourcing fullfillment my  guess is they are more generic
than we think.

I tried a retail upgrade install from a full copy of MS WIN & Ultimate. I
elected an inplace installation. I was in a rush and did not check the vendors
site ( Toshiba) where they thay had model specific upgrade instructions which
included a program to run after a clean intall or a seperate on for a upgrade
install.

I didn't install it and had funky stuff going on with video,

I elected to play it safe and do a clean install and ran the utility program
and everything is hunky dory now.

1. I agree it's stalled. Cacel it if possible and restart. I hope yuo backed
up your data.
2,. if machine restarts and you didn't backup - do it now.
3. while waiting check out completely Acers site in general and your model in
particular for instructions.
4. do an clean install if at all possible if you have a good data backup.

"Silent song" was just an example name.
You need to record or edit something that is a "silent" file.
Here is a 60 second silent WAV file for D/L I found with Google.
<http://www.mrichter.com/cdr/files/silence.zip>
That site is "OK", he has been around "forever"... (15 0r 20 years.)

You could use Windows (audio) Recorder to record a file of any
length, or any "correct" program you happen to have to record/edit
any file you can get, or make one yourself..

Audio Grabber is a good choice. Set it up for recording, and then record
"nothing" (or at a VERY low input setting) for 10 seconds.
<http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/> Then convert it to MP3
if needed. There are lots of free programs for changing files
from one type of audio to another.

There are a thousand ways to do this. It depends on what you have
to work with.

What type of files (extension type) are you using now?

I'm not familiar with Acer in general, or the type of upgrade disks
they ship to the RECENT Vista purchasers/users for the free upgrades.
Being a large "OEM Channel" type manufacturer, I'm pretty certain
they will have some tricks up their sleeves to prevent using the disk on a
different computer. (This would be required in their agreements
with MS.) We will assume you are using this on the correct, proper computer.
So enough with the general "legal" disclaimers... (boring...)

Having said that, If it is a regular "in-place" upgrade that is supposed to
retain all your files, settings AND INSTALLED PROGRAMS,
I have never seen that take more than 4 hours.

HP is a little slower getting their "free upgrade to Win7" DVDs
out, so I have not used an OEM Channel manufacturers "solution" for
this exact type of upgrade, (yet)...

I have done in-place upgrades on an HP Laptop running
Vista-Home-Prem-OEM, but for THAT upgrade I used a
RETAIL(FPP) FULL version Win7 Ultimate DVD and as an
"in-place upgrade", (NOT a clean install.)
Going through and keeping everything old in the "in-place" upgrade
does take up to 8 times as long.

A "clean install" takes about 20-30 minutes on a state of the art
new desktop machine. (I've actually done clean installs too.)

IMHO, 25 hours (or 28 by now?) is way too long.
I would have to "guess" it is choking on something.
I'd call Acer and see what they say. It was logging what it was
doing at the time it choked.

The machine should still be new enough to be under warranty, or even
under support for the upgrade, but I've also seen warnings
(somewhere???) that the disks might come too late to be covered.
(I forget what OEM weasel/jackasses said that...)

Let us know what is happening. Don't turn the machine off until you
talk to Acer.
The good news is that the old OS might be hosed (maybe not, it should
roll back), but your data will be on the HD (somewhere) unless
some VERY traumatic event (like a hardware failure) happened to it.

Don't start a "factory restore" or any type of operation that would
include a format, etc...

It the very least, a boot CD and a portable HD will get the data back
with a 99.9% chance of success, (unless the HD failed, like I said...)

Good luck, It is not as bad as it seems... (Easy for me to say...)

You do not list that you are using "authenticated" below.
I listed that in my first reply as one of my settings that works
perfectly for me).
Generally speaking, if that is set wrong,
(backwards one way or the other), (or anything else wrong),
people will have the type of problem you are experiencing.

Remember also that sending and receiving are totally different.
Some places require you to "use one" before the other, but that is
a requirement fading in popularity at the ISPs or hosts.
I can't remember that being an issue anyplace I go recently.

I've used Gmail for years, and for several years have only exported and imported
the settings from computer to computer. By that I am
trying to say they do NOT seem to change them at all from year to year.

Disclaimer: I don't use Thunderbird, but all the settings should be the same as
the ones used in OE. (Or Windows Mail, Or Windows Live Mail, etc...) The servers
don't really care what e-mail program you are using.

Maybe someone will say that is "in the settings", but I make a
10 second silent song (I use a smaller one) and put it in the
playlist between each of the others.

The silent song must actually be in the file location that is used
by the playlist.

Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to increase the "gap" between songs
on a selected playlist, ideally I would like a gap of about 10 secs between
the end of one and the start of another.

I use both iTunes ( v 7.7.1.11 ) and Windows Media Player.

many thanks,

Brian
