Try using MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware. They are both listed here:
(http://simplycomputers.davidron.com/spyware), which is this group's wiki page
on spyware, etc.

Otherwise, please be more specific as to the name of this "security tool" so
that we can google for additional info to help you eradicate it.

I know that if I go to edit->account settings->and choose "offline and
disk space", I see the following:
   http://ratamacu.freeshell.org/temp/OfflineDiskSpace.png

This is for an IMAP account, but I believe that you get about the same
   screen for a POP account.

Rats, I keep forgetting I still have programs on the old laptop that do not
exist on this new one. So, if I remember correctly, I can go to downloads.com
and put in the name of my printer and download the drivers. Right? I just
knocked the old laptop to the floor, so I may never get it to work again. sigh

If you have a XP installation Cd that you can boot from, you can use it
to get to the Repair Console by pressing R at the first stopping point.
AFter you get the command prompt, try typing chkdsk c: /r and maybe it
will fix the problem. Post back here for further suggestions.

The laptop may have dual video outputs (if its a newer machine) - you would need
the proper cables DVI, HDMI or whatever and an HD TV to connect it too... It
may also have a standard VGA output that you could connect a standard monitor.
With the cables connected the computer should find the new monitor.

"I tested screen and it says it is ok"

If it didn't come on - how did you test it? I am confused by this.

If screen is black - do you have an external monitor to attached to VGA port to
see if probalem is physical with screen or video card or driver?

Add a "Sent" Column (in the sent mail folder/box) if there is none.
Then click on that header once or twice until you see it the way you want.

I click *all?* the headers all the time in the various mail boxes
for a number of reasons.
You don't have to think of this as permanent settings.
They "might" stay the same if never touched, but I can't say I'd
count on it. <grin>
It is better to know how it works, and then you can make it do what
you want, for different reasons -- other times.

Last time "we" discussed adding Columns. In the Sent box/folder,
if you pick the column you want to sort by, (lets say for this
example the "To:" column), and click on the header, you will sort
by each name. Click again and they all reverse.
You will still have to scroll to any variations of the name you used,
and then scroll up or down the dates for that person.

If this does not work well enough, and you have a fair idea what
you are looking for, you might want to try the Find (or search) feature that is
built into OE. That allows you to limit the number
of results displayed. It is on the " Edit" menu.

If it didn't come on - how did you test it? I am confused by this.

If screen is black - do you have an external monitor to attached to VGA port to
see if probalem is physical with screen or video card or driver?

Sounds like it will not do much. <bummer>
Something is obviously damaged, but we don't have much to go on,
so have no clear starting point.
Sometimes the most important question is: Is any DATA at risk?

Are you able to get it to do "anything" when booting in a regular
way?

What are you able to do if/(WHEN?) you boot into Safe-mode?
I'm already forced<?> into assuming you have some version of
Windows, and I sort of hate assuming anything... Assuming stuff
generates lots of great answers that don't necessarily apply to your situation
at all. That doesn't make them wrong, they just don't
"fit" (or help with) your problem.
This model seems to ship with Microsoft Vista Home Basic and a
CD/DVD combo drive. Is that correct?

Do you have access to any type of "Live bootable CD"? A Linux live
demo, or a (very) special Windows one? Those are great to do a
generic test of the functionality of the basic hardware. Laptops
are at a greater risk for having the hardware damaged.

Depending on how much DATA is on the hard drive that might not be
backed-up, I'd be careful about starting any type of "restore"
from a CD/DVD supplied by the OEM manufacturer of a Laptop.

IF you answer the questions above, address those answers to the
Group in general. Others will feel more free to jump in with ideas
that way.

I don't know if someone can advise me but I have an Acer5315 laptop.

It was loaned to my daughter for uni and various people used it.

It will turn on but won't log off without being manually turned off at the
button.

When it is on I can't get it to open any of the programmes.

If I try to open task manager it puts a small icon in the sys tray but won't
open.

I have tried to uninstall norton (don't know why it was on there) but it has
left some files which can't be removed.

Any ideas for someone who really has no idea what they are doing????

Thank you

Sue

I've been using a Microtek scanner for almost five years (Scanmaker 6000;
6400 x 3200 dpi; legal-sized scan surface). It still works like a champ
(slooooow, but good results), and its negative/slide scanner (a separate
device that sits on the glass surface) produces amazing images. There are
several listed on eBay really cheap!

In my experience, a scanner is a scanner, and scanning above 600 DPI
just gives you a clearer view of dust and specks in the print itself. I
hate all-in-one machines because just like swiss army knives, they don't
do anything well. Who actually opens cans in their kitchens with a
pocket knife?

If you can find one, a sheet-feed scanner would save you a TON of time.
Other than that, I like option #2.

I know that if I go to edit->account settings->and choose "offline and
disk space", I see the following:

This is for an IMAP account, but I believe that you get about the same
screen for a POP account.
