WinXP

I'm trying to install the free version of CutePDF Writer 2.8, but even
though the download and install processes appear to go fine, all I get is
the Read Me and the Uninstall files.

First, I downloaded and installed the required Converter.exe ("...installs
GPL Ghostscript 8.15...prints and converts PostScript and PDF Files"), then
CuteWriter.exe; got no desktop icon; CutePDF Writer appears in the
Start:Programs list, but there's no shortcut to run the program. If I
remove CutePDF Writer and reinstall Converter, I see a split-second
black-background window with white text, but nothing shows in the Programs
list (maybe it's not supposed to). When the installation (or
reinstallation) of CutePDF Writer is complete, it automatically opens the
online ReadMe page which is just an invitation to upgrade to CutePDF
Professional.

I need to convert an image file (.pspimage) to a pdf file. If anyone would
recommend a different program, please let me know where to find it.

Thanks, SB

The first digit of the version number is the year that the version came
out, and the part after the "dot" is the month. 9.10 came out october
2009. If you used to be a Windows user, this might seem fairly recent, but
in the world of Ubuntu, this is ANCIENT. Ubuntu releases a new desktop
operating system every 6 months - usually October (x.10) and April (x.04).
Ubtuntu 12.04 just came out, so 9.10 is now six versions behind.

The newer version is much faster and has support for a lot more hardware
devices right out of the box.

CutePDF Writer installs itself as a printer subsystem so you need to right click
the file, select print and then select cutepdf and you can then process the file
as a pdf.

Basically, the US Government seized control over some servers that were
being connected to by people with malware on their computer. Many months
ago, the government removed the ability for those servers to hurt people
that are infected, but shutting them down would have disabled Internet to
the people infected. Now, the Government has decided to shut those servers
down which will cut the network connection of those infected.

The government isn't using malware against citizens in this case, it has
been (for months) trying to shut the malware down with a minimal impact to
those who are infected.

Michael.

There is a place that oversees all the domain registars.
ICANN.org they may be able to help in a situation where a domain registar goes
out of business and you need to transfer yours to another hosting site.

Ahhh....no wonder it wasn't working for me. LOL. Sorry to be so dense.

The only problem I see right now is that there's no setting for the paper
size I generally use, A3+ which is 13" x 19" (my image prints just over 12"
x 16"). There are a couple dozen other paper-size options, and after
looking up some of the names I was unfamiliar with, I think the closest one
is Arch C which is 18" x 24". Because I'll be taking this file to a
professional printer, perhaps the paper size selected for the pdf file is
not significant.

I'm also confused about the image quality of the output file. My original
(300 dpi, saved in the native Paint Shop Pro format) is 40,000K (40 MB,
right?), but the pdf file (the CutePDF settings defaulted to 600 dpi for
some reason) is only 7 MB. Is there some other file format I should be
converting to that will result in an image with the least possible loss of
information?

Thanks, SB

In my opinion, If you have a valid COA for XP on your computer, you are
entitled to, and have paid for,a working installation of XP in that
computer. That particular key does not have to be the one currently in
use in that computer.

If you don't agree with this, take a brand new computer from HP or Dell
or Toshiba and run one of the keyfinder programs on the legal Windows
installation in that computer and compare it with the COA key on the
sticker. I can guarantee you it will not match. If the Manufacturers
don't install Windows using the key on the COA, why would I worry about
it? I am not a Microsoft policeman.

If you have paid for a legal Windows installation, you are entitled to
have an installation that actually works. Period.

Yes should have no problem.
Get a copy of the OS cd/dvd and install using
your own product key.

I did with Vista Business, got a copy of Vista from
a friend and used my own key and it was activated
automatically.

Any idea what kind of RAM is used.  Is it DDR or DDR2.
He is in different city otherwise I could take the RAM out

The Crucial scanner not only will tell him how much and what type of memory is
currently installed but also what other types he can use and the maximum the
motherboard will support.

Hello Thomas,

You first messages were not 100% clear, but this one is.

I know you said the keyboard worked fine until you deleted Ubuntu and tried to
install Windows. The fact that the keyboard stopped working when you deleted
Ubuntu may be just a coincidence.

Mike had a good idea ... be sure to look in the BIOS to see if the keyboard is
disabled. I have not heard of a computer doing this on its own, but who knows?

Perhaps a stray cosmic ray struck the keyboard controller chip??

A keyboard has a controller chip on it, and the motherboard has a second
keyboard controller chip on it.

I'm not sure that the signals from a USB keyboard pass through the motherboard's
keyboard controller, but they probably do.

If you look in BIOS and the keyboard is enabled, then it's possible that your
onboard controller chip just happened to take this opportunity to die.

They are usually not replaceable ... you would need to replace the whole
motherboard.

But take a good look through your BIOS settings before you do that.

partition that the OS was on before I reformatted the HD and placed the windows

product code due to the unresponsive keyboard. Therefore there are no other
programs to use. I tried plugging a usb keyboard in and restarting but that does
not work either.

What to do? Find a Product Key. I spent time searching and finally found where
to get one for $30.00 and they sent it to me so I put it in and it works.

Not true!!! It is completely legal. I have a bootleg copy of windows xp pro.
I intall using the bootleg product key. This key will NOT pass the
authentication test that MS has. But it will be activated but the person can
NOT use update features. I only use this when a customer has a computer that
had Windows Pro on it. I have tried using their product key with my version of
Pro but it won't work. So after the instal I go to MS website and d/l their
product key changer and change it to the customer's valid product key.

I have noticed that there is only one version of XP Home but many versions of XP

A few years ago, we used to direct commonly asked questions to our Wiki
(editable web page). It's still online, but it's rarely used. It seems to
me that we'd save ourselves a lot of effort and help good advice bubble to
the surface more easily if we all collaborated on a single large answer to
common questions rather than lots of smaller (often differing) opinions.
I'd love it if the members of the group would help keep it up to date and
direct people to it.

Hello

If you don't mind my asking, what are you referring to when you say a "bootleg"
copy?

Is that something that was stolen, or perhaps downloaded from a torrent?

Isn't anything that is called a bootleg illegal by definition?

Also, if your customer has a valid (legal) product key, why don't you use this
when asked to enter the product key? does it not work with the bootleg?

Lastly, can you send me the link to the Microsoft product changer utility? I'd
like to download that.

thanks

Hi Roger

I did indeed write it. Thanks :)

Hi Ron

I just added my little rant above to your wiki, and shall continue to add
more things as I think of things to write. One thing though: I added my
email, but now it won't allow me to edit it again. It's asking for a
password.

Yahoo is having a spring cleaning. Things have been slow but seem to be
coming back to normal.

Billybob, I thought you'd never ask; had no one noticed that from 11:15am
on Apr 27 to 1:43am today there'd been no posts from a usually gabby group?

SB--
All the questions you bring up concern the preparation for printing. That
being so, you should be talking with your printer, not with us. Most
printers live by the quality of their work, and they are usually capable of
steering you properly.
