I just bought a SEAGATE 146.8GB ULTRA 320 SCSI 10K RPM CHEETAH 68PIN
3.5LP Drive and I am looking for an external enclosure for it. How do
I know it the enclosure will fit it?

Reggie,
In my original post I explained that my ISP people
spent the better part of 2 days trying to make XP
recognize my ADSL modem, which, incidentally, they had
provided. I kept saying that maybe we needed a driver
upgrade but they assured me that XP had the necessary
drivers already, and that drivers were not the
problem. I have since confirmed this with other
users. But you are probably right about other
programs/hardware. I am glad to be reminded that I
may need drivers for other programs. It’s not too
late at all! I value the reminder. Thanks.

What I would like to know is how well the Files and
Transfer Wizard in XP works. I’m told it’s tricky.
I’m delaying tackling this problem because I need a
good solid chunk of time when neither my wife nor I
need the computer and I won’t be interrupted!!

Regards,

Adrian

Hello guys. I got a prob. This PC I have runs on WinXP Pro and uses a
56K internal modem that uses Microsoft's generic driver. The
connection speed is 36K max. Then until one time, while i'm on-line,
the PC re-started out of nothing. But when it turns on again, the
phone connected to the modem has no dial tone. I turned off the
computer; the dial tone comes back. I turned it on, the tone wasn't
there again. I tried intalling the OEM driver that comes with the
modem, still no dial tone when PC is on. What do you think is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

The above was on our task bar. Unable to right or left click to make
it go away or get any info. Ran Ran McAfee, SpySweeper and AdAware -
nothing found it. Ran search on yahoo, google - only 1 vague reply.
Rebooted and it is gone, but not forgotten. Any ideas as to what it
was or is?? We are a little hinky as we just had to reformat after
acquiring Trojan Horse Spy-Agent.d. We got it before McAfee and
Norton had a scan for it. Geek Squad could not remove all parts so we
reformated.
Thanks,

Have you run the modem diagnostics on it?

I understand that the File and Transfer wizard works as well as you tell it to;
in other words, know what you want to transfer, before you start the process.
You have to run the transfer wizard on the receiving computer first. ALSO it
will transfer files, but NOT programs. You will have to install the PROGRAMS on
the new computer.

An alternative to actually moving the files is to network the computers using a
simple crossover or an inexpensive hub. that way both computers can use one
internet connection, one printer, and each computer user can decide which files
will be accessible to the user on the other computer. I decided to do that when
I had to figure out how to move all the stuff from the old computer to the new
one. I was going to use a crossover cable but there wasn't one available in our
town at any of the stores that are open when i could get there, so I got a
network card for the old computer, a hub for the system, and for $45, I have a
home network. Both computers can access the internet (as long as the primary
computer is turned on) and both computers can use the printer (same condition.)
I didn't need to run the file transfer wizard, becuase the files I want to
access from the new computer that are on the old one I just went in and made
"shared." Then I uninstalled the printer driver from
the old computer, and deleted the printer from the old computer's
Start>Settings>Printers menu. Then I went to Start>Settings>Printers menu, Add
new printer, and followed the directions to use a network printer. Setting up
the internet connection sharing was a little more involved, but not difficult.
something to consider.

Hi,
Could anyone advise me on how to delete the blocked sender's list in
Outlook Express without doing it one at a time?
Thanks for any advice.

If the Internet connection will never be visible on the internal
network, then you don't need a router or a firewall. All you need is a
hub or switch between the computers.

Do you want help configuring the software too?

I created several ebooks in PDF format and I uploaded them into
geocities for free. However, it seems there is a bandwidth limitation
with geocities and therfore some of my visitors can not download my
files.

Is there any other good places to upload my files so that my visitors
will not experience any restrictions.

Thanks

It sounds a lot like your hard drive is not working. Do you have

put it into another computer to see if it's really the hard drive?

Found this on:

*What does the term {Disarmed} mean?

{Disarmed} means that when checking an email MailScanner found an
html
tag that is considered dangerous in emails, e.g. <form> and <iframe>.
You still receive the email message but with those tags removed.

It's a good explanation but there is an incorrect statement in there:

" An application with multiple software threads will run faster on a
dual-core processor because the operating system can assign an
individual thread to its own processor core. Multithreaded applications
running on a single-core processor must wait for one thread to finish
before another thread can be processed"

This is not true. When a thread needs to go to memory or another device
such as a hard drive it "blocks". That is, it stops processing while it
waits for these transactions to take place. Meanwhile, another thread
of the same application or a different application entirely will take
over to make sure that the CPU always has something to do. It's true
that one thread must be stopped before another thread can start, a
single thread may stop and start up again thousands of times in a
minute. This is how computers appear to "multitask".

This is the exact reason why doubling the number of CPU chips doesn't
double the speed of the computer - we've gotten smart enough to keep the
chip working when processes don't need them.

A search with www.google.com for the terms
"{Disarmed} email header" (without the quotes)
suggest that you may be using a Mail Scanning software and that
the alert means that you received email containing HTML
tags which are considered dangerous. I would expect that the
tags were removed and the email was deliverd.

Does this fit your case?

I'm not going to pretend that I fully understand what you just said
(thats way out of my league).
I would like to say that everything I seem to be reading (if I'm
reading it correctly) states that a dual core CPU can 'assign an
individual thread to its own processor core'. BUT, only if the
operating system supports it, and from what I read, Windows
doesn't.
Also you need application software support (which I personally don't
know of any , but that doesn't mean there isn't any).
So with those two things in mind, "doubling the number of CPU chips
doesn't double the speed of the computer", as stated.
I may be completley wrong on all of this, I just try to decipher
what I read and hope for the best.

Have you tried uninstalling and then downloading the YM program from the
web again? Could be that something didn't download.

I've forgotten the name of the program that can communicate with
virtually all IM programs but I'll find it. I've been wanting to try it
myself.

i don't pay for my yahoo mail and i can download all my yahoo mail in to my
outlook express.

Go to your yahoo mail online, click on mail options in yahoo mail, click on pop
access and forwarding.
you should see this
Web & POP Access [POP Settings]
Access Yahoo! Mail via the web interface and through any email program
using POP3 (e.g., Eudora, Outlook, or Netscape Mail).

             When downloading new messages:
I don't want to receive any messages that SpamGuard thinks are
spam

I want to receive all messages, including those that SpamGuard
thinks are spam

For messages that SpamGuard thinks are spam, add [Bulk] as a prefix
to the subject
Learn more about these options - View POP Settings

then all you do is go to your e-mail prog outlook etc and add a new account
type just your user name in the username box, and just you password in the
password box then the incomming mail server as pop.mail.yahoo.com and the smtp
server as smtp.mail.yahoo.com, click on advanced and tell outlook that your
server requires authentication and to use the same settings as your incomming
mail server, click apply then ok click finish an dyou should beable to download
all your mail to outlook.

hope this works for you

Nancy,
Thanks for your detailed reply. I’m clearer on one
thing and that is that the transfer wizard only
transfers files and not programs. I hadn’t understood
this and I’m glad to know it.

I read what you said about networking with another
computer with a lot of interest. The trouble is that
I am using only one computer and I am simply trying to
upgrade my C drive from ME to XP with a minimum amount
of trouble. I don’t have a second computer to network
so that’s out. In case you missed what I had said
previously I have already made 2 unsuccessful attempts
to put XP on top of my existing ME. I fear I have to
go the long way round! I’m just putting it off!
Thanks again,
Adrian

Thanks for that. I have also talked to my ISP and they did add a new
email scanner to their system. In a few days or so I will be able to go
into the online account setting and tweak it for my account if needed.
At my own risk. It was just strange that all of the sudden those popped
in the mail and my ISP gave no warning. Then the first call they tell me
they have no idea what it is. I knew I had not changed anything.

Just a thought, I've done a lot of upgrading from Win98 to XP and after
you put the XP cd in while Win98 is running, when it gets to the screen
that asks for "Is this an upgrade or a fresh install" (Or something like
that), it has the word recommended behind the upgrade option in
parentheses, but I always choose the fresh install.

I think that then you can keep the programs that you've had and the XP
Upgrade disk is satisfied that you had another OS on the HD and it has
always installed for me.

However, that being said, I always do it on a freshly formated HD, so
there really aren't any programs for me to save. So, this will work, but
you can save it as a last resort.

If your XP disk is truly an "upgrade" disk, there is no "Fresh install"
option, it can't be installed from a "C" prompt, it must be installed in
such a way that it recognizes a previous OS.

I just recently went wireless with my internet and I have a minor
irritating situation. My Gateway laptop (win xp), works well wireless
but regularly displays the internet log on window when I click a link.
I click closed, then another window opens up saying "page not
available offline" (or something close to that). It gives me a choice
to log on, so I click the "log on" button and it takes me to the
website. Is there a way to keep this from happening? It's a minor
problem but I figured I would ask..

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ace, I believe you may have an option in the UK that we don't have
here in the States, and that is if we want to be able to get our mail
thru a pop server we need to have a paid account. If Jeff is from
here He will see that under "mail options" we don't have that choice.

Turned on my PC this morning and ran Norton Anti Virus as usual on
startup and I came up with a SERIOUS THREAT of Virus Name:
Backdoor.Haxdoor.D which has infected C:\Windows\system32\drct16.dll.

Ran the virus updates and still cannot remove it. Ran Xoftspy Virus
program and it can't remove it either. How can I dump this. Thanks
in advance. Frustrated in LA. Win XP Pro PIV 2.8

To a certain extent windows does support multiple threading. Thus the
hyperthreading in the newer P4's as well as multiple CPU's being in
servers. The bottle neck does occur at the hard disk, but when
certain files are being accessed regularly, they pile into RAM. On a
machine with gigs of RAM, this will be faster because the multiple
CPU's can access this storage space. Dual core chips are able to run
application faster if it is supported. I, personally, have never
needed a dual core chip or a hyperthreaded one. I have a 3ghz P4 with
HT for one of my boxes and an Athlon 2800 chip for my main box.
Unless I am running linux on the P4 (which I am now), the Athlon beats
it. 64 bit will be nice though, when I get around to upgrading.
