used in simputer more operating system design details  like memory management,

That's assuming you have a Strong Arm Dubba with you. Most probably
what you need is a cross-compiler for Strong Arm.

cross compilers for the Strong ARM. The cross compilers (gcc) run on Linux/x86.

or you could telnet to skiffcluster[1-6].handhelds.org and natively
compile there, those are sa1110 dubbas meant for open source program
development for the strongarm ( donated by compaq ).

I would like to build an interface to database for a simputer . i studied the code written for IMLI .But iam not able to start . Can you tell me where to start from. As of now iam working only with P III based machine . Does dhvani work on p III based machines.

i think by now i have learnt quite a bit about the simputer to be
able to answer this ! :)

vivek, please correct me if i go wrong somewhere.

i) the simputer has a fully functional tcp/ip socket layer. hence it
can communicate with a database server on the network.
ii) IMLI can be used as the frontend (GUI) to the database.
communcation with the dbase can be done using perl scripts.
iii) IMLI installs perfectly well on pIII machines running linux.
make sure you have perl 5.5 and Tk.pm installed.
iv) Dhvani the text-to-speech engine runs on pIII/linux too, you need
a working sound card. If you are running KDE turn off the sound
server from the control panel, it gave me problems.

  I'm following simputer for a long time now, waiting for the
happyness of having mine as soon as possible.

  There is a need I have, and that simputer will be able to
fullfill in the future.

  I exchange and use PGP ( gnupg ) key/fpr to communicate
with other French Linux users.

  We often meet in a bar to talk, drink, and exchange keys to
build our own free & independant trust net.

  It would be wonderful to have a gnupg keyring on simputer.

  what do you think of It ?

I am pleased to announce a new development:

Developers of Simputer hardware as well as users of portable Internet communication, wireless and other devices, particularly those traveling and working in rural areas or remote locations will find a useful power source, as given below, to charge the (most commonly) 6 Volt batteries of their equipment and hence prevent down-time or malfunctioning of these equipment caused by power shortage.

This portable device would provide about 25 Watt-hours of charge per day, more than sufficient for such equipment.

Description, Scope:

TBP make Solar Photovoltaic module of power rating 5 Watts (peak) @ 6 Volts, self-regulated, suitable for charging 3 nos. AAA size cells, folded into half, for due portability;
Duck cotton bag with carrying handles;
Diode for back-flow protection;
Overall dimensions - 37 cm (H) X 28 cm (W) X 2.5 cm (D) - erected;
- 18 cm (H) X 28 cm (W) X 2.5 cm (D) folded over into half size;
Connection options -
- By lead and suitable jack to the Simputer / your equipment OR
- Suitable bracket for charging of batterries outside the equipment OR
[as selected by the hardware OEM, to be detailed separately after testing a prototype of the Simputer].

The above device would be priced at about Rs 3000=00 (USD: 65-68) for retail, excluding the connecting arrangement, at present; subject to a firm enquiry and quotation.

To customise this solar charger to your equipment design, through a guarantee of compatibility, for detailing of connection / wiring arrangement as above and to avail of OEM / factory support as applicable, you will need to have a prototype of your product tested (on returnable basis) at the laboratories of Tata BP Solar (India) Ltd in Bangalore.

This power solution is availed by the kind co-operation of Tata BP Solar India Ltd.
