second hand motorola a780s and a1200s are available for dirt cheap
rates. Get a Linux Guru to install openezx on it and you are done.

Now in market some Mobile Phone are also available
which provide much more facilties than a Simputer
-- Entering text/data with Light touch pen
-- Wide LCD colour screen
-- all MM, Blue tooth, audio, vedio, Data transfer facilties.
-- add-on Flash RamCards
-- programmable softwares/utilties, GIS, Internet,
-- much more.
-- cheaper price.

Would Simputer compete with these?

Hi Giridhar and all on the list,

All your mails keep my hopes of the "simputer" alive
in me too. After a very long wait I have moved on to
other mobile computing platforms. I am an ardent linux
fan and that is what keeps my hopes glued to the
simputer kind of devices. There was a very
enthusiastic team at picopeta. Thanks Giri, for
sharing your views with us.

More than the hardware itself, the "Simputer" has
become a metaphor for affordable mobile computing in
the developing world.

No thing can be lost from the lessons learnt.

Warm Regards,

Arun

gday, what does anyone think about the microsoft takeover bid on yahoo..??..
any company in india interested in developing linux .. yahoo.. is a free service
company compared with microsoft which is just cumulating profits, much above the
3 or 5 per cent returns..
any mittal or tata ?.. or anyother solution..??..

money (equivalent of about Rs.20,000) I received a scanned copy of a
shipping bill from Encore and a couple of weeks later I had voice

When I reached their office on the far side of the airport, I was
surprised to
find only three people working there. There was a quick verification of
the
shipping bill and photo ID. A couple of signatures and I was handed a
big but light carton. I told the slightly amused staff it was a
computer from India. I started walking back excitedly in the scorching

the customs office stopped her
car and gave me ride to the bus stop. On the bus I ripped open the
carton strewing thermocole kidneys all over and fished out a gleaming
blister
pack with a purple simputer cocooned inside. I spent the next few weeks
with
familiarizing myself with its limited features, connecting USB keyboard,
pen
drives, customizing the background screen, adding desktop icons
,checking out the internet connectivity and PC connectivity via serial
port.
I was thinking of using it for some simple laboratory automation tasks.
Later on a visit to Bangalore I stopped by Encore to see the simptuer
team
and get some clarifications on several
things I had not yet figured out. The team was a young and enthusiastic
one.
They crowded around me, elbowing each other trying to demonstrate
features of the
device and help me with my questions. Particularly, Ramprasad who was
very
responsive over email. On another visit Encore after I returned to
Bangalore they upgraded the OS, installed a better MP3 player and
replaced
my docking unit which had developed a loose contact with a new one, all
free of
charge!

I am not an IT professional. I only have a working knowledge of Linux
and
use it for my day-to-day simple computing needs. I bought the simptuer
for fun.
So far my experience has been positive, though it was many years ago. I
am not

easy availability of the device was not ensured.

I think a lot of people belonging to this group are always hoping that
the simputer will make a major comeback.
What it's creators and marketers never caught on to or cared about was
that it was a dream come true for a lot of Indians like me.
But as is wont in this country the best can simply fail because the
people behind it gave up too soon and too easily.
They were happy to ape what came from the west better still not even
build on our ability to be as good as if not better than the west.
To me one shining example of it is our ISRO, they never gave up. Today
they have proved that they are as capable if not better than the rest
of the world.

The reason the Simputer turned out to be a dead duck was because the
all too easy 'we give up' attitude sprung up to kill it.
I don't care if it sold or not outside of our borders, it was meant
for India and Indians and without a doubt would have improved with
time. I don't care what the west or anybody else said about it too.

We also should realise that most Indians really care nothing much for
India as can be seen from the goings on in Maharashtra. In less that
100 years we are likely to revert back to the hodge podge of states
and fiefs we were before the British dragged together a country out of
  all of them called India

hi aruna and everyone else interested,
what is it about the simputer indeed, nothing but hype created by the likes of
erik so&so... and ofcourse the relic of amida web pages.
a sturdy device, it was.. but still wont to minor failures, which require
frequent calibration by the company workshop... the catch the company has
disappeared, or apparently bought up by some fraud who still carry out the ads
au missionary style, but never respond to direct queries for maintenance. so i,
and hundreds of others in india have simputer pieces which we would be happy to
dump... what better place than sri lanka!
still interested, send me your delivery address.

Hello Anura,

Have a look at the Picopeta website. The latest Amida model is for
sale now. I can't tell you if they will ship it to Sri Lanka, which
is another country if I'm right. You need to have your credit card
ready :-)). Just write them and submit your question.

What are your plans with the Simputer? I'd like to know more about
your project and your intensions. I suppose it will be for the
benefit of rural areas in Sri Lanka, like in India. Please let me
know and share it with others on the discussion list.

What is the price of Simputers today ? Is Mobilis out ? What are the
equivalent or better products in the market ? And what are the prices ?

What is the price of Neo1739? And OLPC? Nokia 770?

Motorola Roker,Ming phones? Sharp Zaurus? You can install
GPE/OpenMoko/OpenEzx on it if I am not wrong!

Simputers given to Cheyyar sugar mills

Special Correspondent

Boon to CANE GROWERS: Food Minister E.V. Velu handing over a simputer
to a cane assistant of the Cheyyar Cooperative Sugar Mills in
Thendhandalam near Cheyyar on Monday.

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Food Minister E.V. Velu handed over simputers to the
cane assistants of the Cheyyar Cooperative Sugar Mills (CCSM) at a
function got up at the mill premises in Thendhandalam village near
Cheyyar on Sunday.

The simputers, which are hand-held simple computers, were introduced
in the CCSM as well as the Vellore Cooperative Sugar Mills at a cost
of Rs.five lakh under the Part II scheme for 2006-07 as a pilot
project in the country to ensure the free flow of information and
transparency in cane management, and speedy delivery of information to
sugarcane growers at their doorstep.

Mr. Velu said Tamil Nadu Government has planned to introduce the
simputer for real time capturing of data on cane cultivation practices
and other related information and on-the-spot delivery of information
to the cane growers in all the cooperative and public sector sugar
mills in Tamil Nadu.

The CCSM is having its operational area in Cheyyar and Vandavasi taluks.
10 cane divisions

The entire area is being segmented into 10 cane divisions and each
division is sub-divided into four or six cane sections, each section
comprising 10 to 15 villages.

Each division is headed by a cane assistant whose main duty is to
visit the farmers in their fields, motivate them to plant sugarcane,
advise them on cane cultivation aspects, pest and disease management,
crop loan arrangements, harvest and transport management. For these,
the cane assistants have to make entries in nearly 15 registers and
records, which takes more time because of the volume of work to be
done. In the present scenario, the cane assistant visits the farmers
in their fields. During field inspection, the cane assistants also
communicate to the farmers the due dates for field operations such as
manuring, plant protection measures and harvest management.

All the data are fed in the Simputer on the spot and real time in the
field. On returning to their respective divisional offices, the cane
assistants download the stored data from the Simputer to the
divisional office computer the same day.
Ethanol unit

Mr. Velu said that an ethanol production unit has been sanctioned for
the CCSM at a cost of Rs.36 crore.

The Minister also distributed cellphone sim cards to the cane
assistants. Sandeep Saxena, Commissioner of Sugars, presided.

Rajasthan to introduce smart card for ration shops

From correspondents in Rajasthan, India, 08:33 PM IST

In an effort to make the public distribution system (PDS) more
efficient, the Rajasthan government will introduce smart cards for the
consumers.

In the initial phase of the project, simputers or hand-held computers
would be installed in Jhalrapatan, Jaipur and Tonk area.

'The civil supplies department has issued these hand-held computers to
over half a dozen ration dealers to test the viability of the system,'
officials in civil supplies department told IANS here Monday.

Special training in operating these simputers is being given to ration
dealers in the state.

The computers would keep updated consumer information and provide
online information of all stocks available in a particular PDS outlet.

Under the new system, every ration shop would have a hand-held
computer, a printer and billing machine.

Many ration shop owners, however, are opposing the move.

'The capacity of these computers is of 20 consumers. If more than 20
consumers come to a shop, it would cause trouble to rations dealers,'
a ration shop owner said.

A smart card has a computer chip and enables its holder to purchase
goods or avail of services, or perform other operations using data
stored on the chip.

*Minutes:*
Meeting of the IISc AANA Board of Directors started at 10.15am, Dec 2, 2007.
Agenda sent by Ram earlier was followed.

Present: Ram Akella, Ashok Sinha, Subba Rao, Yashraj Bhatnagar
By Telephone: Arkal Shenoy, Gopi Mamidipudi, Murthy Gudipati
Guest: Prof S Mohan, Alumni Cell, IISc Bangalore

The board welcomed Prof Mohan who is visitng the Bay Area for the next
couple of months. He has been a very key driver of alumni activities both in
India and the US and he provided an excellent summary of progress made over
the past six months:
A. In respect of the *Centenary Celebrations* being actively planned now,
the dates for the next global conference have been fixed as Dec 14 -- 17,
2008, at IISc Bangalore. The date has been decided after much deliberation,
and board members agreed with the logic and the choice. The conf planning
currently anticipates similarities with the global conference held in Santa
Clara (June 22-24, 2007) with departmental reunions, participations of Nobel
Laureates and Industry leaders, interdisciplinary programs, showcasing the
departments, focus on Education and ICORE, etc.
B. *Archives of IISc* are being prepared. *ACTION:* Everone who has access
to IISc related archival materials (articles, photographs, news reports of
happenings at IISc, profession-related letters from IISc
directors/professors, verifiable reports of anecdotes, etc.) is requested to
please collect such material and send it to Prof Mohan (email id above) or
to IISc AANA.
C. A good understanding and working relationship has been established
between the *Institute, IISc Alumni Association in Bangalore and the Alumni
Cell* which is now located within the Alumni Association building. Sunday
morning Breakfasts are working out very well with about 100 -- 150 people
participating.
D. An effort is underway to create a *database* with correlated data
from three sources: Mohan Raj Goyal has data of many US alumni, Mr
Paneerselvan has data which also includes department and date of graduation,
and Prof Narahari who has a database of alumni information. The expectation
is that by the end of Janaury 2008, there will be a clear and verified
database containing 5-6000 alumni names.
E. The Institute os making a serious effort to engage with its alumni all
over trhe world. A *visitors guest house* is being constructed which will
house about 100 visitors at any given time -- this will be ready by July
2008. Alumni can stay in the Institute guest house any time they wish and as
rooms are available. The issues related to obtaining transcripts from the
Institute has been resolved and anyone who needs help in this regard can
contact IIsc AANA or the Alumni Cell.

Murthy provided inputs regarding communication with alumni chapters. *
ACTION:* He was requested to provide his inputs by email -- he has done
that. Ram refered to his recent calls to chapter leaders and Sunderrajan's
recent email summarizing the conversations. He emphasized the need to grow
the board and the exectuive team.

Arkal provided his input on the Southwest chapter inauguration by president
Kalam at Rice University. There were many Indians attending, although
perhaps not that many were IISc alumni. Most attendees expressed their
interest in working together on topics of common interest. Murthy suggetsed
we should solicit those who wish to contribute for their ideas on their
contributions, and then to set our expectations for these actions if we
decide to move forward.

Subba Rao presented the consolidated accounts. The Board has authorized the
hire of an accountant to keep accounts as they are essential for IRS reports
and for transparency in the organization. *ACTION:* Gopi and Subba Rao will
obtain accountant rates during the week of Dec 4 and the board will make a
decision based on that.

Murthy made the point that whenever a board member makes a commitment
(primarily of a financial nature, but otherwise too) to any third party,
that commitment needs to be ratified by the board for it to be valid for the
organization.

Ashok presented a powerpoint file outlining his main points on good
governance practices. The file has been shared with all board members. Board
members were in agreement that these inputs provided a good basis to start
from. *ACTION*: Yash and Ram to develop a proposal for the national
executive.

Ram suggested that we should accommodate active members into the
organization with appropriate titles for the work they have done or are
doing. *ACTION:* Request passed onto the Executive team through Ashok -- the
team will determine the best way to do so.

Ram relayed a request from Vas that in preparation for the centennial
celebrations, marketing should send out a news story every month. *ACTION*:
Yash to write the draft of the first story and send it to Vas.

Board authorized the search for a proper web-master to generate and maintain
an active website. *ACTION*: Prof Mohan to see if IISc student / external
webmaster can be obtained in India. Gopi to provide inputs as appropriate.

Item 10 on the agenda -- *ACTION*: renewed request to Gopi to handle this.

Ram and Prof Mohan provided a summary of interactions with ICORE.
*ACTION:*This is something the board will keep an eye on and engage as
action on the
ground becomes feasible.

*ACTION:* Subba Rao will bring a budget proposal to the board's next meeting
for the calendar year 2008.

I just looked at:
http://openalchemy.org/index.php/API_Documentation
and I must say it's high quality documentation.

Perhaps if more of this was available during/before the
harware launch, critical mass of users could have been
acheived ?

I've never used 'apple stuff', but I understand it's their
'clear-presentation/easy-usability' which makes them
a winner ?

Newgroups..etc. show that there are increasing experimenters
for ARM systems. Perhaps the existing hardware investment
could easily be modified for a prototyping-board [PCB] to
get a market and even grow simputer usage ?

Main Page From OpenAlchemy.org

In the beginning, there was the Amida Simputer <http://amidasimputer.com/>.

Then, there was Amida Alchemy <http://www.amidasimputer.com/alchemy/>.

Now, there is *OpenAlchemy*.

Alchemy is the much acclaimed user interface used by the Amida Simputer,
optimised for mobile computing devices. This interface was recently released
under the GPL as "OpenAlchemy".

Please feel free to explore this site, which contains source code,
documentation, code example, ports, device-specific examples, and much more.
Our hope is to see OpenAlchemy become widely used on many different devices,
from Simputers to new and futuristic mobile computing devices.

Thanks for visiting, and for becoming part of the OpenAlchemy community!

Try the more fully qualified URL

http://openalchemy.org/index.php/Main_Page

Also try doing a search (google) on keyword term "openalchemy.org" and see if
you can 'hit' alternative routes, mirrors, or any sub-pages. If not able to
reach any of this webpage, consider checking your blacklist in your Internet
Options.

For the last one week openalchemy. org is down. Are any of you folks
able to access it?

From the whois lookup it appears that they have successfully renewed
the domain but since then, the servers are not accessible.

Subject: [iisc_aana_south_central] Visit of Former President Dr. APJ Kalam to
Rice Univ and inaguration of SW chap

Dear SW chapter members:
Dr. Kalam will be visiting Rice University, Houston, on Oct 18 and give a
public lecture.
  http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~events/pls/Kalam.shtml
The event will take place at Stude Hall in the Music school, from 8 to 9 pm,
and needs tickets for security purposes, although it is a free lecture. I would
like to know if you are planning to attend the event to get you tickets to the
lecture. Please respond to this email and let me know latest by 5 pm on Monday
Oct 15.
The IISc AANA SW chapter will be inagurated by Dr. Kalam and President David
Leebron of Rice University on the evening of Oct 18 before the public lecture.
Five representatives of IISc AANA and IISc AANA SW will be present for this
event during a private dinner hosted by Rice for Dr. Kalam. This list has been
decided in consultation with IISc AANA.
After the public lecture the former president will be at a private reception at
Rice. I would like to know how many of you would like to attend this private
reception from 9 to 9:30 pm on Oct 18. It will give an opportunity for our
chapter members to honor Dr. Kalam. There will be other groups and
representatives meeting Dr. Kalam at this reception. Please respond to this
email as soon as possible, latest by 5 pm on Monday Oct 15 and let me know if
you plan to attend the reception, so that I can get you an invitation.
If you cannot make it to the lecture in person, you can watch it live at
webcast.rice.edu.
  Sincerely,
  Satish Nagarajaiah
  Chair, IISc AANA SW chapter
