Hello,
You should be seeing faster Simpy now - one of the servers got more memory and
seems to be happy about it.

New memory might be coming soon, which will take care of things. The server
that's causing the slowness has an amazingly little RAM.

Had a chance to try that yet? I'm waiting 3 seconds between API calls and it's
still timing out on only RenameTag as far as I can tell.
Hi,
The DB server has been sweating extra these past few days. I'll see if I can
adjust thing...

When attempting to rename a tag via the API on the syapizend account, my request
times out even with timeouts as long as 60 and 90 seconds. My account only has
one bookmark in it. Web seems to take a long time as well. At one point with
web, I got this:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /simpy/TagManagement.do.
Reason: Error reading from remote server
Apache Server at www.simpy.com Port 80
Perhaps this is a proxy issue?
Hi,
I've been considering moving from delicious to simpy after delicious's
recent makeover. I've imported my delicious bookmarks but they all
end up with an `added' date of now; the date I added them to
delicious isn't used. The date is made available by delicious.
I mentioned this to feedback@... and heard from Otis who I think was
saying it doesn't make sense for a bookmark to had been added before
the account was created, and not to worry because all future bookmarks
would have an accurate date.
My reply's gone unanswered, presumably because I couldn't persuade
Otis, but I thought I'd ask a wider audience their opinion to see if
there's something odd about my view and to get the issue `on record'
for those that come looking later. At the moment, Simpy isn't of use
to me, which is a shame.
I think moving my bookmarks from delicious to Simpy should be akin to
moving my email from Thunderbird to mutt. I wouldn't expect all the
emails' Date headers to be re-set to `now'. In the same way, when I
decided to bookmark a URL is very useful information to me and a good
aid in searching. "I added it years ago, when I was working with
John." To discard this information on import seems an oversight but
apparently it's by design. I can't see a good justification for it.
I've checked the API but http://www.simpy.com/doc/api/rest/SaveLink
doesn't seem to let an alternative time and date to `now' to be
specified, so I can't even work around it myself by doing my own import.
Cheers,
Ralph.
Hi all. When I first started using Simpy I got this kind of amusing
alien-looking icon that showed up whenever I posted a public link.
How can I change that icon? Can I upload something from my computer
to take its place?
Any help that can be offered would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)
Hello everyone!
I'm new in the simpy-dev group, so please be gentle. Please apologise if the
following
question does not suit the dev group but instead the users one.
A few days ago, it came to my attention a site called goosh.org and I felt in
love with it
immediately, so useful!!! How cool would it be if there's an extension to lookup
stuff in
simpy.com? Is anyone working on this by any chance?
I know little about javascript/ajax and web development in general and I was
trying to figure
out how the HTTP authentication would be implemented in the script to talk to
goosh.org.
Example extensions can be found in:
http://blog.yungsang.com/2008/06/06/yubnub-extension-for-goosh/http://blog.yungsang.com/2008/06/02/summize-extension-for-goosh/
Any ideas, help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if we could search SIMPY bookmarks by tags only..so
far it seems that you can only do so for our own bookmarks but not for
other users.
any suggestions?
thks.

I don't know about Sympy, but Simpy is not open-source, as Alexandru
pointed out, though it is build on a lot of open-source libraries and
applications.
However, this is all open-source:

Look for Scuttle, if you are interested in a very basic social
bookmarking package. I don't think it's being developed any more, but I
could be wrong.

I think that sounds correct, Benjamin. #2 would give a basis for
comparison if modification times are tracked in the local copy and #1
would provide a method of saving all new and modified bookmarks at
once rather than doing it for individual bookmarks.
I think we would need another method in the same vein for mass
deletion as well, though, where the local copy would have to keep
track of deletion times as well.
I suspect that Simpy isn't retaining deleted bookmarks, as that could
eventually require a large amount of disk space over time. I imagine
that #3 might be a problem in that respect. If I'm wrong, then yes,
the methods we've described thus far should allow for the
implementation of two-way synchronization, which I think would be
great for backups as well as applications with offline support.

Hi,
I agree with you Matthew. What do you think would be such operations,
that are needed for a more efficient synchronization?
I can think of only three:
1) Some kind of "mass-saving/updating" method would be needed. Because
when I sync after a long period of being offline, it's probable that a
lot has changed. And instead of making a single call for each of the
possibly hundred changed items, a single call with all changed items
within, would be a lot more efficient.
2) Something like "lastUpdate". The del.icio.us API has the "update"
call (http://del.icio.us/help/api/update) which returns the time the
last change happened on the server side. This would help save
unnecessary API calls. Some, if not a lot.
3) Going even further would be a call, that would return only the
added AND deleted items after a given point in time. I think this,
includes the "lastupdate" call somehow, and together with number 1)
would result in only a total of two calls being necessary for a
complete sync between local and remote.
What do you think?

A thought occurred to me today: I don't think there's any method of
backing up one's bookmarks from Simpy without doing a full dump (which
can tax the servers if you have a lot of bookmarks) or writing
something to use the API to sychronize with a local copy bookmark by
bookmark (which would tax the servers because of all the API calls
that would be required). It would be easy enough to check for
additions after a certain date, but this doesn't help for deletions
without checking bookmarks individually. Otis, would it be possible to
add something to Simpy to make synchronization with a local copy more
feasible?

Hi Matthew,
My guess is the unit test are getting caught by anti-spam traps. I can
tell you more about that via direct email or IM, for obvious reasons. :)

Hi Matthew,
It has been some time since our last correspondence; how are you? I am
excited about the upcoming 1.0.0 Zend Framework release, and I hope you
are, too.
I am having some trouble getting the Simpy unit tests to run reliably.
Every once in a while, I can get the entire suite to run. Most of the
time, however, I get 1 error and 2 failures. Sometimes, the Simpy.com
service/website becomes completely unavailable. Maybe they have some
rule on their end regarding the number of requests allowed in a certain
time?
Though I don't have the two failure messages available, I can pretty
consistently get the following error message:
1) testRenameTag(Zend_Service_SimpyTest)
Zend_Http_Client_Exception: Unable to read response, or response is empty
If I can reproduce the two failure messages, I'll forward those along,
too, if you don't mind taking a look.
Anyway, before diving too deeply into debugging the problems, I thought
to ask you if you might experience any similar problems when you run the
tests? How might we remedy the issues?
By the way, the unit test code coverage is very good. Thanks again for
your contributions!
Best regards,
Darby

Of course. I changed SaveNote call to take an optional noteId
parameter. If noteId is valid (matches an existing Note), the existing
Note is updated with the new values specified in the SaveNote call.
Let me know if this works for your script.

Hi Otis,
while updating simpy.py to v1.1 I resurrected my notes syncing script.
But didn't get very far.
Because I found, that it's not possible to _update_ notes via the API.
The documentation for SaveNote doesn't mention an "id" or "noteId"
parameter. And even if I provide one anyway, it gets "ignored" and
every note I save via SaveNote ends up as a new note.
Is it possible to fix that?
Thanks a lot

Hi all,
as promised I made another simpy.py release. Taken from the
sourceforge announcement:
<announce>
I'm proud and pleased to announce the immediate availability of
version 1.1 of the Python client for the REST API for http://simpy.com
Most noteable Change:
The lib is now released under a dual license. You can use it under
Apache v2 or LGPL v2.1
Additional Changes:
* allowed for all notes to be retrieved at once (without search)
* added support for DeleteNote API call
* fixed issue when trying to update notes or links with non-ASCII characters
updates for simpy.py version 1.1
* added id attribute to Note class
The release is available for download at
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=138299&package_id=162348&\
release_id=502363
</announce>
@Otis: I updated the simpytools.sf.net site, made a sf.net news post
and updated the freshmeat project.
Cheers
Benjamin
Excellent news! I'm looking forward to 1.1!

Hi Otis and fellow simpyians,
as the author of the module, I see problem in the dual-license. Just
go ahead and change it. But as I just recently used my own module a
little I discovered some, let's say "strange" things. Nothing
dramatic. For example it's not possible to get all notes, in the
current version. One can only search for notes. That's pretty stupid.
;)
I'll make some minor changes and release an 1.1 version of the simp
python api module. So maybe Magnus should await and use the 1.1
release. I'll get it done within the next two days.
Cheers

Hello,
Somebody is looking into adding support for Simpy to epilicious (an
extension to Epiphany, part of epiphany-extensions since 2.18) and is
looking into the Python REST API client (that's your work, Benjamin).
This is licensed under ASL 2.0. Magnus, the person looking into adding
the eplicious support for Simpy found that GNOME requires GPL/LGPL
licensed software, so now Magnus (and I) are wondering if anyone sees
any issues with dual-licensing (ASL + GPL) the Python client.
http://www.mail-archive.com/gnome-devel-list@gnome.org/msg00797.htmlhttp://www.mail-archive.com/desktop-devel-list@gnome.org/msg09406.html
Does anyone have any concerns with this? If not, I'll make the
appropriate changes to things that live under http://simpytools.sf.net .
Thanks,
Otis
