Dear Mamoun Sakkal,

Indeed it was the most important issue in unicode Arabic fonts for Urdu/Siraiki languages. If its solved, its a pleasure for us, that we can fully use Siraiki in Windows Vista.
I will give u feedback once i completely check these fonts, specially Arabic Typesetting and Majalla. Uighur does not suit to Siraiki, as far I think.

Thanks

Dear Abdul Rahim Nizamani,

Thank you for your comments on the fonts.

The only specific concern I was able to identify is the position of
the Shadda and Kasra, which are usually combined above the letter for
Arabic, but preferred to be separate, one above and one below the
letter, for Siraiki and other languages.

This issue is now solved in the new VISTA where Microsoft made the
decision to have these two marks positioned above and below the base
letter rather than combined above it. This will be the behavior for
all languages that use the Arabic script, and will be implemented in
all VISTA Arabic core fonts. I believe that we already made this
change for Microsoft Uighur font and a few others.

It will be nice to hear more ideas about what qualities would Siraiki
users want in the fonts they use.

Thanks again,
Mamoun Sakkal

Respected Dr. Sarmad Hussain

It is a pleasure for us to have a good font for all Pakistani languages, i.e. Nafees Pakistani Naskh. But since now Siraiki has official alphabets and is being used on computers, your font needs some changes to support it.

I checked the font. It lacks three characters specific to Siraiki listed below:

U+0768, Rhoon of Siraiki, (noon with nuqta and small toe)
U+0759, Ddeh of siraiki (Urdu Dal with two vertical dots below)
U+06B0, Ggaf of siraiki (Gaf with a ring below). this letter is used by some siraiki people as was the practive in early siraiki script. Nowadays most use the sindhi Ggaaf (gaf with two vertical dots below), but this character should also be implemented, in case siraiki people adopt it as standard.

Please implement these changes. This will be a great pleasure for us to have such a nice font for Siraiki language.

Thanks
Abdul Rahim Nizamani

You can download the sample poetry (about 40 poems) of Hazrat Abdul Ghaffar Naqshbandi, who is commonly known in Sindh as Hazrat Pir Mitha (R.A), from the Books section of http://www.islahulmuslimeen.org/ named Deewan-e-Ghaffaria.

Its in pdf format with embedded fonts, so it doesn't require siraiki support installed.
I request interested members to review it. One of the objectives of this group is to publish classical siraiki poetry on internet in unicode format, and this is the start of it.

Thanks
Abdul Rahim Nizamani

You are right that a full unicode font will be better for Siraiki, although that's not compulsory. Siraiki script is based on Urdu script, so a Siraiki font will certainly support Urdu. some Arabic characters must also be included, so Islamic writings can fully utilize that font.
Moreover, Ghaffari is named after the famous Siraiki poet of recent times, Hazrat Abdul Ghaffar Naqshbandi of Larkana, who was originaly from Multan but later migrated to Larkana, Sindh, to preach Islam and Naqshbandi way. His poetry is based on Love and sufism. Since I'm composing His siraiki poetry and just for that I started research on Siraiki computing and ultimately started this group, I have named the font Ghaffari. But I donot claim it as a separate font. Its actually Scheherazade font. Moreover, its not the default font for Siraiki, rather the most suitable one of all I found. We need another proper Siraiki font, maybe an enhancement of the common Urdu naskh fonts that will suit Siraiki, as well as Urdu. That maybe named as you wish.

Thanks
Abdul Rahim Nizamani

Two things, I want to suggest for fonts

1) If it is possible, please design the fonts such as they can support all languages written in arabic script (these may be about 20)

2) Ghaffari no doubt is good choice for font name but if one font is specific to Seraiki Language or it is designed by some Seraiki Lover then it should be named like ''Lutf'' or ''Fareed'' (two lege legendary poets of Seraiki) or ''Sussi'' or so to reflect Seraiki Moasshrat and Adab.

Mr. Mamoun Sakkal,

I have included Arabic Typesetting in the Fonts folder under Files section, but not included its sample text as picture in the photos section. Will add it soon.

I personally use Scheherazade font for typesetting the poetry book of Siraiki I'm currently working on. You can download the sample ebook from the books section of
http://www.islahulmuslimeen.org

Arabic Typesetting is a good font for Urdu/Siraiki scripts, as well as the Majalla UI. But for certain reasons, I chose Scheherazade as it suits the Naskh style. Moreover, this font doesn't use any combination characters from Arabic presentation forms, so its simple.

But I had to change it little bit to suit the Pakistani typography, because it was designed for Arabic script. Although it supports Pakistani languages using opentype tables, using different ligatures of same character for different languages, the Microsoft platform softwares do not support this feature. That is why, I added a little bit features in it, like ligatures Allah, Sallalah Aliah Wassalam, and did some other minor changes. I named the new font Ghaffari (present in files section).

Again for Majalla UI, A.Typesetting and Uighur fonts, I would like to say that there must be language features for different languages in the font rendering. These fonts are designed for Arabic script, and some features of Pakistani languages are not present. For example, the Shadda+Kasra on a character. Both show above the character, although in Pakistani typography Shadda is shown above and Kasra below. This is an opentype feature, so I could not change it in my Ghaffari font.

I will look to your kind help and suggestions for font designing, to have a good Naskh style standard font for Siraiki.

A nice phonetic keyboard layout for Siraiki is available from
http://www.geocities.com/seraikitec/

You can also download it from the Keyboard Layouts folder of Files
section of this group.

This is really a nice keyboard layout based on phonetic style, and
should be checked by interested members.

Since Siraiki keyboard layouts fully support Urdu script, there is no
need to install two separate keyboards for Siraiki and Urdu. Siraiki
users should use their keyboard for both languages.

Thanks

Mr. Raza

2) Ghaffari no doubt is good choice for font name but if one font is specific to Seraiki Language or it is designed by some Seraiki Lover then it should be named like ''Lutf'' or ''Fareed'' (two lege legendary poets of Seraiki) or ''Sussi'' or so to reflect Seraiki Moasshrat and Adab.

I would appreciate making new keyboard layouts for Siraiki language. More options would benefit users from different areas and perspective. Users of Siraiki wasaib will like to use another keyboard layout than that for Siraiki users belonging to Sindh.
You may create keyboard layout for Siraiki, but wait a few days until I post list of Siraiki alphabets with their unicode values.
I will also revise my keyboard layout soon, with minor adjustments.

Currently, I am planning to create a Siraiki unicode installer, that will install proper Siraiki configuration in Windows, so that users don't have to manually install all the stuff required to enable siraiki language.

Mr. Paul Nelson

As u know, Siraiki uses two characters from Arabic supplement range
of unicode. For this we need uniscribe's later versions than in WinXP.
I wish to create an installer to install siraiki support for
Windows, that contains the keyboard layout, siraiki fonts, and most
important, the update of usp10.dll. Is that allowed by Microsoft? if
not, what is the proper method to distribute update of usp10.dll?
Moreover, WinXP with SP2 contains versions of system fonts that
support Sindhi, Siraiki. but if a user has win2000 or winxp without
sp2, can i use updates of system fonts to install automatically?

Moreover, usp10.dll is protected by Windows File Protection. How can i
override this to install it using a setup creator software (if its legal).

Dear members!

This group has successfully started. Now that there are a few
members, we have to think over our aims and objectives. In my opinion,
this group has to get following objectives:

Siraiki language has two characters in Arabic Supplement part of
Unicode. Hence Windows XP does not fully support Siraiki, due to a
lesser version of uniscribe (unicode characters rendering engine).
Later versions of uniscribe are available but, first they are not
easily available to every user although i have put it in Files section
of this group, second installing an update is a very difficult
procedure for a non-IT computer user. Hence we need to devise an easy
method to get and install it, so common computer users can easily get
it installed and use siraiki in their systems.

Many arabic fonts support Siraiki script (when proper uniscribe file
is installed), but they r not sufficient to act as a default siraiki
font. We need a good Naskh-style simple font, that supports all the
Urdu, as well as Siraiki characters of unicode. Certainly Arabic
characters must also be supported, as many of the writings and texts
of siraiki contain references to arabic phrases. So we'll have to
pursue this matter, until we get one or two good working fonts.
Currently, i'm using a variant of Scheherazade font that fits all my
needs, but its small in point-size, and does not look good enough to
look as siraiki text.

After all this effort, we'll concentrate on digitizing of classic text
and poetry of siraiki literature, and publish online. Due to efforts
of Mr. Majid Bhurgri, Shah-Jo-Risalo the most sacred text of Sindhi
language, has been published on the internet. Siraiki poetry is also
one of the most beautiful poetries of Pakistan. Sachal Sarmast, Ghulam
Fareed, Hamal Faqeer and Pir Mitha are well known Siraiki poets. If we
succeed in publishing their poetry online, it will be a great
accomplishment.

I need further suggestions from group members.

Thanks

Siraiki was previously written in Nastaliq style b/c the script used was that of Urdu (as in the case of Punjabi). Now that,
Siraiki has developed its own script with added characters, Nastaliq is not suitable for it. The extra characters are six, four from Sindhi and two are present in the Arabic supplement page of unicode.

Although some matters are still not decided for Siraiki script, it is somewhat standardized (not by any govt authority, but by the users). Seraiki egroups had a long discussion over it, and most of the users preferred Naskh style for their language. I also prefer it. The book i'm going to publish uses the Scheherazade font by SIL, a naskh font.
