I'm having a problem using Method Renderings with passed parameters.
The article at http://sdn.sitecore.net/Developer/4,-d-
,2/Development/Renderings%20and%20Layouts/Rendering%20elements.aspx
states:
The method must have the following signature:
public string methodname(NameValueCollection parameters, IWebItem
itm). The return value of the function will be shown as html on the
page
However, a method with this signature causes a "not found" error on
the sitecore client. If the method has NO parameters, then Sitecore
finds it fine.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Andy
Thank you for the information. This is very important
to us right now, so I'm glad to find this out.

All content is stored as UTF8, so I think the answer
is yes (but I'm no expert on encoding and character
sets). I know specifically that Chinese (big5) is
supported, and I would assume Japanese is as well.

In case Jon's question needs Martin to post an answer, Martin has
been in Dallas all week helping IMS with our web site rewrite. He
left this afternoon to return to Europe and I expect he will be
checking the group site on Sunday or Monday.
Is Sitecore double-byte enabled? That is, can we use
double-byte languages like japanese and chinese?
Thank you,

Hi Val,
Your solution if definetly fit for at shared hosting solution - no
problem in that - I have seen many shared hosting Sitecore solutions for
many clients over the last years - no problem in that. Only thing you
need to make sure is that you will be able to have some peak memory
usages when publishing - preferably around 512mb -> 1gig memory for
bigger sites running XML file version.
But still, your client's site is so small, that there will be no problem
- I guess at max around a 100mb of memory usage in peak periods.
The problem is of course DT search - but there are other search
solutions out there... hosted at the search vendor's site, but the
search is running on your site...

Martin

Sitecore? Recs?
Good idea!
After researching many shared hosting providers, I do not think any
shared host can work with our implementation because we need to also
host DTsearch which needs to be installed and configured via the
Windows Installer. After looking at the install files and
configuration for DTSearch, I did not see anywhere where I could
configure/manage DTsearch 100% without an installation.
Does anybody know if DTSearch can be setup to work on a shared host?
Has anybody tried to install Sitecore on a shared host?
Site size: very small, about 40-80 pages
Modules: DTSearch
Traffic: < 100gb a month predicted since all the video/audio is hosted
by a streaming Content Distribution Network provider
I brainstormed some architectural choices such as installing DTsearch
on another server or using a hosted search (such as Mondosoft),
however the costs or dependancy on another server do not fit the
requirements.
We have pretty much decided to go with a dedicated server even though
the site is small. We do own a full rack for our internal use, but
our goal was originally to outsource the 24x7 platform monitoring,
backup, and maintenance.
I did find some promising shared hosting providers for .NET:
http://www.intermedia.net/http://www.uplinkearth.comhttp://www.maximumasp.com/http://cihost.com/ (Cheap dedicated servers)
This option will allow us to add more sitecore sites to our
environment easily, and we can definitely talk with other partners
about utilizing our servers for Sitecore implementations in the future.

Recs?
Does anybody have any recomendations for a shared hosting provider
that works well with Sitecore?
Since Sitecore requires a lot of memory, I am curious if anybody knows
if it is feasible to use a shared hosting server.
Our current client does not want to spend the money or require the
bandwidth of a dedicated server.
Thanks!

Here is an even easier way to add this to the UI,
which may be appropriate for some purposes. Note that
the API referenced is 4.2, but the technique described
works in current releases.

Hi John,
No there is no direct issue when using threading - the thing was just that
you need to be sure that the processing of records is finished before return
the control of the client to the user - imagine at user publishing while
running the set-masters.. that wouldn't necessarily be a good thing :-) also
- the register editted flag is read by the publishing mechanism, so you
might want to finish all work on the master database before returning
control to the user.
Oops about the '|' (I actually thought about it, but forgot it :-))

Woops, I forgot to mention I had intended this code
for development systems. It seems that if you set
read permissions for the item in /System/Tools you can
control who has access in the GUI.
Thanks for the info on threading - is there any
whitepaper or other resource on the issues? So if you
want to actually use your system while a long process
like this is running, I *think* you can add something
like:
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep( 100 );
Maybe after processing some number of records.
Also note the possible typo in the current .cs:
strNewMasters = strCurrentMasters + strMasterID;
I think that should be:
strNewMasters = strCurrentMasters + strMasterID + '|';
Hopefully I can post a new version some time (I would
like to be able to enter master name and have the
system determine GUID, etc.).

Cool John!
Yes - the ImasterItem.ChildIterator in recursive use is a much better
solution :-)
I actually don't know why Sitecore persist using guids as strings and not
the guid type in their API - it really is a pain...
Btw. By experience, I would strongly suggest NOT to use threading when doing
stuff like this in Sitecore... Except if you handle it correctly (not
easy)... And this should definetly be a developer-only tool :-)

Thanks Martin. I am sending an ASPX that does this,
which can be added to the "Tools" menu by following
the instructions at
http://sdn.sitecore.net/Developer/4,-d-,3/Development/Customizing%20Sitecore
/Extending%20Tools%20Menu.aspx
- just have the JavaScript call window.open to the
ASPX. This code does not trap errors and is not
documented or supported, and may not work in many
cases (use at your own risk, YMMV).
I am no expert so this code may not be the best, but
it does seem to function.
It seems that the value of the GUID must be uppercase;
the ToString method of GUID seems to default to
lowercase. Also, I had to add recursion
(IMasterItem.GetChildIterator seems to only go one
level), and use the IMasterItem.ChildIterator property
as opposed to calling GetChildIterator( "//item" ). I
also added a commit and maybe some other code.
This dominates the CPU on my laptop while it runs, so
you may want to add threading, sleeping, etc.
Suggestions, bug reports, etc. on this piece would be
appreciated.

I haven't tried it, but I
would expect a .NET program that descends the tree and calls this method
should do the trick. I have some code that imports
content from a legacy CMS so I can add this call and test, but
I won't have time to do this until at least this afternoon.

I find this annoying as well - in fact I try to avoid
using that editor - but I haven't found a great
solution.
I typically create the layouts with Sitecore, then use
Visual Studio or any text editor to maintain them. If
I need to add a new rendering or something I just add
it to a temporary layout, then cut and paste the code.
I know this isn't an optimal solution, and someone may
know of a better alternative, but this at least gives
me complete control of the data.

should work in all major (updated) browsers.
I use it on the current sitecore project I’m

Place this file in "Program Files\Visual Studio
.NET\Common7\Packages\schemas\xml" or equivalent as sc.xsd.
Ensure this attribute is defined in the xsl:stylesheet element of your

Visual Studio intellisense should now support the Sitecore extensions.
