Hello,
The final version 2.7 is now available.

New functions from last beta 2.7g:
        Include a keypad in the find window.
        Option to hide the objects below the horizon.
        Save the defined label with the chart.
        New DDE command SAVE and LOAD to manage .cdc file.
        DDE command always return ACK or NAK in the current date line after
completion.
        Realsky support package updated with a new version from Bill Gray
that give more precise result near the pole.

This new version as require some change in the web download page :

The new files are only available from the Stargazing or Astrosurf download
page, beware that other link may still point to the old files. I am
currently looking to update the other mirror server.

To take advantage of a new feature to automatically activate a new catalog
you install I have rebuild all the current catalog package. There is no
need to get this files again if you already install it, so I don't change
the catalog revision date.

The language other than English or French require a separate download, this
give use more flexibility to manage the translations (actually 22 !).

To keep a smallest size as possible for the basic package it no more
include the series96.dll and the Milky Way but this is a separate download.
You can also keep the file you have from a previous version.

I put all this files and some more to the "complet" package for an easiest
installation if you use a speedy link.

An update file is available to migrate from the version 2.61 (or a beta
2.7). For older version there is too much change and you must get the basic
package to migrate.

I still need to update some web page, specifically the source code page and
the programming examples.

Nouvelles fonctions depuis la beta 2.7g :
        Ajout d'un "clavier" dans la fenetre de recherche.
        Option pour cacher les objets sous l'horizon.
        Enregistre les labels avec la carte.
        Nouvelles commandes DDE SAVE et LOAD pour les fichiers .cdc.
        Les commandes DDE retournent toujours ACK ou NAK apres execution.
        Le paquet de support pour Realsky est mis a jour avec une nouvelle
version de Bill Gray qui donne de meilleurs resultats pres du pole.

Cette nouvelle version a necessite quelques changement a la page de
telechargement :

Les nouveaux fichier ne sont disponibles que depuis les pages de
telechargement d'Astrosurf ou de Stargazing, attention que certain autres
liens peuvent encore pointer sur les ancients fichier. Je suis en train de
regarder pour mettre a jours les autres miroirs.

J'ai remplace tout les fichiers d'installation des catalogues afin de
beneficier d'une nouvelle activation automatique apres installation. Il n'y
a pas besoin de reinstaller ces catalogues si vous les avez deja, je n'ai
donc pas changer la date de ces catalogues.

Les traductions autre que le francais et l'anglais doivent maintenant etre
telechargees separements. Cela donne plus de souplesse pour gerer ces
traductions (actuellement 22 !).

Pour garder une taille raisonnable au paquet de base j'en ai retirer le
fichier series96.dll ainsi que la Voie Lactee. Ces deux options sont
disponibles separement. Vous pouvez egalement conserver les fichiers que
vous avez d'une version precedente.

J'ai ajoute ces fichiers ainsi que quelques autres au paquet "complet" pour
faciliter l'installation a ceux qui disposent d'une connexion rapide.

Une mise a jour est disponible si vous avez au moins la version 2.61 (ou
une beta 2.7). Pour les versions plus anciennes il faut reinstaller le
paquet de base.

Je dois encore mettre a jour certaines pages, notamment le code source et
les exemples de programmation.

A new beta version is available, it is now  very near the final 2.7 as I
finish to update the documentation.

Test version 2.7g , November 4 2001
      New functions :
        Help files updated for version 2.7 (French and English only).
        Continuous limiting magnitude variation.
        Draw the nebulae accordingly to their surface brightness.
        Save the legend to a bitmap file as well as the chart.
        New DDE commands.
        Create a file with the last selected object (-p nsec command line
option).
        Option to skip confirm on exit.
      Problem correction :
        Save the night vision mode for the next startup.
        Set timeout for ftp and http server.
        Add the catalog id to the label for catalog generated with Catgen.
        Time mismatch for asteroid and comet label.
        Other minor change.

Hello,

A few correction where done to the new catalog tool Catgen after is first
two week of existence.
This include the following change :
-More input record control.
-Sometime a character is lost when reading Unix files.
-Correction for truncation with the "Advanced" option.
-All messages in English.
-The classical . , decimal separator problem with some Windows version.
-The logarithmic scale is not working, must be corrected with next Cartes
du Ciel version.

After a prolongated summer pause I finally terminate to program the
different function I want to add to this version.
I hope this is the last beta version before the availability of the final
2.7 version.
The documentation is still not available, this is the main work I have to
do now.

   -New functions :
        Generate new catalog by yourself with the new CATGEN tool.
        Add GSC-II catalog to the online resource.
        New star representation using bitmap image.
        Sky color depending of the daylight, twilight and Moon.
        Change the World Map by the one you want.
        Move the zoom box before confirmation (left mouse button down).
        Show the position angle between two objects (in addition to angular
distance).
        Redesign the Search box.
        Copy the chart to JPEG or GIF image, also new DDE command SJPG and SGIF.
        Do not plot duplicate entries from GSC catalog (but still display
them if required).
        Add a print job name.
        Add planetary satellites diameter information.
        Ability to use any catalog (except USNO-A) for any chart scale up to
the full sky by  switching off the memory cache (beware that performance
may suffer).
        New version of series96.dll that include the data files, contributed
by Jeff Burton.
   -Problem correction :
        Correct planetary magnitude to be consistent with the Astronomical
Almanac.
        Help do not display on external browser.
        Black area when printing to some printer.
        Missing translation.

That's all for the moment ! All the other modification will wait for this
version be stabilized, I think that more than eight month of beta version
is too much.

Apres une pose estivale un peu prolongee j'ai finalement termine de
programmer les fonctions que je voulais ajouter a cette version.
J'espere que cette version beta est la derniere avant la version 2.7 finale.
Il me reste encore a faire la documentation qui n'est donc pas encore
disponible.

   -Nouvelles fonctions :
        Creation de catalogues avec le nouvel outils CATGEN.
         Ajout du catalogue GSC-II aux resources en lignes.
         Nouvelle representation des etoiles
         Couleur du ciel en fonction du crepuscule et de la Lune.
         Deplacement de la fenetre de zoom (en laissant le bouton droit de
la souris enfonce).
         Affiche l'angle de position entre deux objets.
         La boite de recherche est simplifiee.
         Copie la carte dans une image au format JPEG ou GIF.
         Suppression de l'affichage a double de certaines etoiles du GSC.
         Ajout d'un nom au travail d'impression.
         Ajout d'information sur le diametre des satellites des planetes.
         Possibilite d'utiliser tous les catalogues (a l'exception de
l'USNO-A) pour toute echelle des cartes en desactivant le cache en memoire
(attention toutefois aux performances).
         Nouvelle version de series96.dll avec les tables de donnees
incluse, contribution de Jeff Burton.
   -Problemes corriges :
        Modification des magnitudes des planetes pour etre conforme au
valeurs de l'Astronomical Almanac.
        L'aide ne s'affiche pas dans un browser externe.
        Zone noir lors de l'impression.
        Oubli de certaines traductions.

C'est tout pour le moment ! Les autres modifications attendrons que cette
version soit stabilisee. Je pense que huit mois pour une version beta c'est
deja beaucoup trop.

This last week the clear sky do not let me much of time for the programming
and the new version is not as advanced as I hope to do before the summer.
Then the program is far than finished and don't despair if all your
suggestion are not include in this version.

New functions :
    Plot satellites direction on the chart.
    Add satellites direction to the list.
    Map for solar eclipses.
    Full name and possible translation for the object properties in the
identification window.
    Undo last label or last circle.
    The calendar may be used as a separate program (need a supplemental
download)
    Record the animation also in GIF format for smaller files.
    Possibility to zoom the world map.
Problem correction :
    Print satellites path.
    Reset observatory and Sun tracking after click to a Solar Eclipse.
    Allow Quicksat to correctly handle the end of the month.
    Problem with some stars identification.
    Missing translation.
    Black horizon on certain printer.
    Mark the object position after a search.

    Remet a jours l'observatoire et le suivit du soleil apres avoir clique

    Traite correctement la fin de mois avec Quicksat.
    Probleme avec l'identification de certaines etoiles.
    Traduction manquantes.
    Horizon noir avec certaines imprimantes.
    Marque la position de l'objet apres une recherche.

Martin Schoenball to provide this data in a useable form :

Abell Clusters of Galaxies (Abell+ 1974) VII/4A (31 Kb)
Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies (UGC) (Nilson 1973) VII/26D (155 Kb)

The third one is about infra-red stellar emission, I think you are not
equipped for observation at 12 microns :o) but this help to identify very
red stars that are also often variables stars :

Catalog of Positions of IR Stellar Sources (CPIRSS) (Hindsley+ 1994) I/270
(826 Kb)

I want also to take your attention to this great page where you can find
additional or replacement data for Cartes du Ciel, there is only a small

A new test version of Cartes du Ciel is available.

      New functions :
        World major cities list
        Select AD, BC year instead of negative year.
        Custom DT-UT value.
        The calendar is now clickable, this show the chart for the describe
event.
        Solar and Lunar eclipses calendar.
        Artificial satellites calendar, including Iridium flare.
        Plot selected satellites to the chart.
        Plot a line between multiple position of planets, comets and asteroids.
        Shifht+rotation give 1 degree and Ctrl+rotation give 45 degrees
rotation.
      Problem correction :
        Two time eyepiece Nr 10.
        Check Astorb validity date.
        More information for invalid external catalog definition.
        No more menu lock when using telescope connection. (require
meade.tid v0.7)
        Change the language file format, there is no more need for a
language number.
        and probably other I don't remember, there is too much time from
last version...

New Meade/LX200 interface version 0.7 :

      -Add an interval timeout setting to solve a problem with some interface
       that have long delay to reply to the two part of a command.
       Symptom is missing declination or Alt-Az information, in this case
increase
       the Interval Timeout from 100 to 200 or 500.
       Also increase the refresh speed accordingly.
      -Correction for the menu lock problem.

Nouvel interface Meade/LX200 version 0.7 :

      -Ajout d'un Interval Timeout pour corriger un probleme avec certain
interfaces
       qui ont un trop long delai de reponse entre deux partie d'une commande.
       Le symptome est un non affichage de la declinaison ou de l'azimut,
dans ce
       cas il faut changer la valeur de 100 pour 200 ou 500 et aussi
augmenter la
       valeur de Refresh Speed.
      -Correction du probleme de blocage des menus.

        Runtime error 217 on exit.
        "Double" label.

The LX200 interface is renamed from LX200.tid to Meade.tid because it
support other telescope models. Please delete old LX200.tid files.

Hello,

A new version of Cartes du Ciel require testing.

The main addition is the telescope interface and as you can imagine I don't
have all the many available hardware on the hand. Then this new version
will require more testing and I choose to do the test now despite I have
many other function to add to this version.

I also add Lunar eclipse display for those who want to look at the next
Tuesday eclipse.

The main reason for this new version is to consolidate the various file
translation I receive but also include some of the modification you suggest
last month.

The new functions are :

- Update for SAC 7.2 (object description change only).
- Continuously identify the objects in the pointer using Shift + move.
- Azimuthal coordinates entry, new keyboard shortcut "m".
- Search double stars by WDS identifier. (Require new WDS installation).
- Option to suppress the display of very extended object (like UMa cluster).
- New Russian translation. New Thai, Polish and Czech help files translation.
- Updated Skyview survey list (Thank's to Jeff Burton).
- Minor problem correction :
    - Some message always issued in French
    - List box problem in the Search menu.

A small (475 KB) update file is available to apply to your existing 2.6
version.

The last version of the LONEOS photometric reference is also available from
the external catalog.

La principale raison de cette nouvelle version est de distribuer les divers
traductions que j'ai recues, mais aussi d'apporter quelques modifications
qui m'ont ete demandees durant ce mois.

Les nouvelles fonctions sont :

- Mise a jours du SAC 7.2 (uniquement modification de la description des
objets)
- Recherche en continu avec Shift + deplacement.
- Saisie de la position azimutale, nouveau raccourci touche "m".
- Recherche des etoiles doubles par numero WDS. (Reinstallation du
catalogue WDS necessaire).
- Possibilite de ne pas afficher les tres grand objets. (comme l'amas de la
Grande Ourse)
- Nouvelle traduction en Russe et traduction des fichiers d'aide en Thai,
Polonais et Tchèque.

- Correction de problemes mineurs :
    - Certain messages sont toujours en francais.
    - Probleme avec les listes dans l'ecran de recherche.

Un petit (475 Ko) fichier permet la mise a jours de votre version 2.6.

I am pleased to announce a new interface between Cartes du Ciel and Deepsky
2000 version 2.

Deepsky 2000 is a software that complement well Cartes du Ciel by its
extended possibility for selection, searching object and observation
logging. You can find more information about Deepsky 2000 from
http://www.deepsky2000.com .

You can now use Cartes du Ciel from Deepsky 2000 for the following function :
- Send objects from the Deepsky spreadsheet into Cartes du Ciel for display
on its star charts.
- View real sky CD images in Cartes du Ciel by selecting the object to view
from the Deepsky spreadsheet.
- Send objects from the Deepsky spreadsheet (GCVS catalog) into VarObs to
display detailed information on variable stars and to plot light curves.

This interface require Cartes du Ciel version 2.6, VarObs 1.24 and Deepsky
2000 version 2 that is actually available as a pre release version from
http://www.deepsky2000.com/beta.htm Look at the main web page for the
availability of the final version.

Deepsky 2000 is a commercial software but this not change in any way the
fact that Cartes du Ciel is and will remain a free software.

Other change :
A new Russian translation and an updated Thai translation are also
available from the download page.

The version 2.6 of Cartes du Ciel / Sky Charts is available.

Except a few bug correction the only visible change from the beta version are :
- Removing of the date and time from the planet's label when only one date
is selected. This contribute to cleanup the display.
- Use the specified color (red by default) to plot the galaxy if the
catalog used don't contain B-V information.
- Include SAC version 7.1, but most of this change where already applied to
the beta version.
- New Serbian translation.

I also replaced the Nebulae package (cdcneb.exe) with an updated NGC2000
catalog. The description is truncated in the original CDS file for M10,
M12, M14, M15, M22, M28, M30, M54, M55, M56, M62, M80.

The long awaited CDROM AstroCD n°3 is now available. Among many other
astronomy resources this CDROM includes Cartes du Ciel version 2.42, the
Tycho catalogue (Tycho-1), the Tycho Input and all the index to search by
GC, HD, SAO, BD, CD, CPD catalogues number. An upgrade package (2.2MB) is
available from my download page to rise it to version 2.6.

rapport a la version beta sont :
- Suppression de la date et heure du label des planetes si une seule date
est affichee. Cela contribue a alleger l'affichage.
- Utilise la couleur indiquee pour les galaxies (rouge par defaut) si le
catalogue utilise ne donne pas la valeur de B-V.
- Mise a jour de SAC version 7.1, mais la plupart des modifications etait
deja apportee a la version beta.
- Nouvelle traduction en Serbe.

J'ai aussi remplacer le fichier des nebuleuses (cdcneb.exe) avec une mise a
jours du catalogue NGC2000. La description est en effet tronquee dans le
fichier original du CDS pour les objets suivant : M10, M12, M14, M15, M22,
M28, M30, M54, M55, M56, M62, M80.

Le CDROM AstroCD n°3 est maintenant disponible. Parmi bien d'autres choses
vous y trouverez la version 2.42 de Cartes du Ciel y compris les catalogues
Tycho (Tycho-1) et Tycho Input ainsi que les indexes pour les recherches
par numero de catalogue GC, HD, SAO, BD, CD, CPD. Un fichier de mise a

Hello,

A new beta version of Cartes du Ciel / Sky Charts is available.

The main reason for this new version is the availability of the SAC 7.0
database. It contain improved position, reference and description for
10'000 objects.
Unfortunately this change require modification to the structure of the data
files and they are not compatible with the actual program version 2.5x that
use SAC 6.2. So I change the program version to avoid confusion and the new
beta is available only as a full basic package.

Other functions are :
- New catalog SAC 7.0
- More search options (SAC, SIMBAD and NED).
- Use less memory and resources.
- More interface functions.
- Allow only one instance of the program. (modifiable using option.exe)
- Use the default browser for the help. (optional)
- Clipboard and BMP file without icon and border.
- Minor problem correction (horizon line).

As usual I particularly appreciate your comment and bug report about this
beta version.

pour 10'000 objets.
Malheureusement ce changement necessite de modifier la structure des
fichiers de ce catalogue et ils ne sont plus compatibles avec la version
2.5x actuelle qui utilise le SAC 6.2.
J'ai donc decider de changer la version du programme pour eviter toute
confusion entres ces fichier et la nouvelle version beta est disponible
seulement comme installation complete.

Les autres modifications sont :
- Ajout du catalogue SAC 7.0
- Plus d'options de recherche (SAC, SIMBAD et NED).
- Utilisation de moins de mémoire et de resources.
- Plus de fonctions d'interface.
- Autorise seulement une instance du programme (modifiable avec option.exe)
- Utilise le navigateur par defaut pour l'aide (optionnel).
- Copie dans le presse-papier et fichier bmp sans les icones et les bordures.
- Correction de plusieurs problèmes mineurs (ligne d'horizon).

Comme d'habitude j'apprecie particulierement vos remarques et description
de problemes avec cette version beta.

The new version 2.54 of Cartes du Ciel / Sky Charts is available from May 30.

This is mainly a bug fix version with very little functional change.
The most important is the correction for the "Out of Resource", "Canvas do
not allow...", "Win32 error..." messages that affect some machine.

New Romanian and Hungarian translation are available, many thank to Robert
Panduru and Lorant Kiss.

New additional external catalog are available :
- Southern Stars embedded in nebulosity  BHe (van den Bergh+, 1975)
I helped Raymond Bruton to type this catalog that is now available from my
download page and from the CDS.
- Catalogue of Reflection Nebulae  VdB (Van den Bergh, 1966)
I added the missing equatorial coordinate to this catalog and it is now
available from my download page.

With this two catalogs both hemisphere are now covered for emission
nebulae, dark nebulae and reflection nebulae.
As an example I upload a chart of a small area in Centaurus at the border
of the Coal Sack containing object from both RCW, BHe and DCld with a DSS
background image. You can get it from

I am very sorry, the patch I deliver yesterday was not compatible with an
earlier 2.5 version dated April 17.
Fortunately Philippe Haake prompt reaction allow me to correct the problem
and the patch is now compatible with all 2.5 version.
As a consequence the patch size grow to 467Kb but this is still better than
the 1.8Mb full update.

This include the following change from the previous version :

- New Czech translation.
- Possibility to limit the magnitude of labeled object.
- Copy the calendar to the clipboard to allow import to a spreadsheet.
- Change in the Vizier data format.
- Add STSCI GSC 1.1 and GSC 1.2 to the online resources.
- Minor bugs corrected :
	 - Setting the altitude of the observatory
	 - Correct tabulation order in the "Locate new position" window.
	 - Disk path problem using Realsky CD's
	 - Draw smaller circle for the Sun and Moon magnitude.

A new patch format allow for a very small update file (270 Kb) if you
already run the version 2.5. The drawback is it require a specific base
file version to run successfully as it carry only the modification to the
files, then it cannot be used to repair an installation, always use the
base version for this usage.

A new download page is also available with additional external catalog.
Actually 15 catalogs are available including a new compilation of the RCW
H-{alpha} emission regions in Southern Milky Way edited by Raymond Bruton
that greatly improve the coverage for bright nebulae in the Southern region.

- Copie du calendrier dans le presse-papier pour importation dans un tableur.
- Changement du format des données de Vizier.
- Ajout aux resources Internet de STSCI GSC 1.1 et GSC 1.2
- Correction de divers petit bug.
	 - altitude de l'observatoire.
	 - ordre des tabulations dans la fenetre de saisie des coordonnees.
	 - probleme de chemin avec les images Realsky.
	 - dessin du soleil et de la lune en magnitude plus petit.

Un nouveau format de patch permet au fichier de mise a jours d'etre tres
petit (270 Kb). Vous pouvez l'utiliser si la version 2.5 est deja
installee. L'inconvenient est qu'il demande une version de base specifique
des fichiers car seul les mise a jours a l'interieur des fichiers sont
inclues. Il n'est donc pas possible de reparer une installation avec ce
fichier, il faut toujours utiliser la version de base pour cela.

Une nouvelle page de telechargement avec des catalogues externes
additionnels est disponible. Actuellement 15 catalogues sont disponibles.
Une nouvelle compilation du RCW H-{alpha} emission regions in Southern
Milky Way redigee par Raymond Bruton permet une meilleur representation des
nebuleuses brillantes de l'hemisphere sud.

The Tycho-2 CDrom is supported by the new version and I plan to distribute
smaller binary version of this catalog.

Beware the FTP directory will not be updated until the final 2.5 version is
available. Be sure to use the link on the download page to retrieve the new
files.

All the modification related to the label or chart annotation are reported
to the next version.

- PGC1999 la derniere version de ce catalogue contient 193'898 galaxies.

Il est possible d'utiliser le CDrom Tycho-2 avec cette version et je
prepare une version binaire plus compacte qui sera disponible prochainement.

Faite attention que le repertoire FTP ne sera pas mis a jours avant la
disponibilite de la version 2.5 finale. Utiliser les liens de la page de
telechargement pour prendre les nouveaux fichiers.

Toutes les modifications en relation avec les labels ou les annotations sur
les cartes sont reportees a la prochaine version.

I am pleased to announce the availability of new translation for Cartes du
Ciel / Sky Charts. A Spanish version was prepared by Enric Ollé, a Catalan
version by Antoni Clavell and the Italian translation was revisited by Luigia
Gervasoni.

Otherwise this version is mainly a bug fix. The only added function is to
print the calendar page.

Problem fixed :

- Improved position of the Moon, the old tables have rapid perturbation of
some arcseconds due to a rounding error.

- Negative twilight time after
March 2000.

- Label still in color when B/W printing.

J'ai le plaisir de vous annoncer la disponnibilite de nouvelles traduction
pour Cartes du Ciel. Une version en Espagnol est preparee par Enric Ollé,
une version en Catalan par Antoni Clavell et la traduction en Italien a

Autrement cette version est surtout pour corriger des problemes. La seule
nouvelle fonction est l'impression depuis le calendrier.

Problemes corriges :

- Amelioration de la position de la Lune, les anciennes tables donnent des
perturbation rapides pouvant atteindre quelques secondes d'arc a cause
d'une erreur d'arrondi.

- Heure negative pour les crepuscules apres mars 2000.

- Labels en couleurs lors d'une impression en noir/blanc.

improve the program usability and I don't want to wait before making the change

You can download the full new version or only an update if you already
install a previous version.

Change from version 2.4 :

	 - Add a main menu.
	 - Move the chart using keyboard arrows.
	 - Reverse the chart.
	 - Search by variable star name.
	 - Move finder circles.
	 - More eyepieces definitions.
	 - Keyboard shortcut.
	 - Many minor problems corrected.

You can also download a new version of the GCVS catalogue containing 68'179
variable stars. Now it include extragalactic variable and new suspected
variables. The
search index is include in the new file.

All the data files including Tycho Input and search index are now online. This
was
made possible with the help of a people that host this files on his home page.

Modification par rapport a la version 2.4 :

- Ajout d'un menu principal.
- Déplacement de la carte avec les flèches du clavier.
- Inversion de la carte.
- Recherche par nom d'étoile variable.
- Déplacement des cercles de repères.
- Plus de définitions d'occulaires.
- Racourcis claviers.
- Correction de nombreux petits problèmes.

Vous pouvez egalement telecharger une nouvelle version du catalogue GCVS qui
contient 68'179 etoiles variables. Il inclu maintenant les variables
extragalactiques et
les etoiles suspectees de variabilite. L'index de recherche est inclu dans ce
fichier.

Tout les fichiers de donnee y compris le Tycho Input et les index de recherche
sont
maintenant disponible. Cela est possible grace a l'aide d'une personne qui
heberge
ces fichiers sur sa page personnelle.
