Thanks, that did the trick. I deleted the old file and re-entered

Subject: [ANN] ACP Version 5.0 available for download
dc3dreamer
Send Email Send Email

DC-3 Dreams is pleased to announce major releases of ACP
Observatory Control Software and its free companion ACP Planner.
Together, these two programs provide complete automated observing
suitable for both astro-imaging and science.

The most obvious change in ACP itself is the new "live" web
browser interface. It was designed from scratch to be the primary
way of doing automated observing both in the observatory and
remotely. It provides simple forms for single target imaging. For
multi-target runs, we provide ACP Planner free of charge. Planner
gives you a way of visualizing target position and timing like no
other. It can be used anywhere, on your laptop while travelling
or by friends wishing to use your observatory (again, it's free).
Once you have planned your multi-target run, upload the plan via
the web and click a button. ACP handles the rest.

There is much more. For more information and a special offer,
please see: http://acp.dc3.com/acp5-rel.html

For general ACP Information, please see: http://acp.dc3.com/

And for information on ACP Planner, please see:
http://acp.dc3.com/planner.html

If you've heard that ACP is hard to use or for geeks only, forget
it! ACP Planner and ACP are easy to use, yet they are the most
flexible and powerful automation packages out there. Look at the
videos, and then get the 60 day free trial to see for yourself.

SMP 11.0.3 on XP Pro

I know I asked this a long time ago but I can't find the information.

When I switch to night mode, the text in the menus and some of the
toolbar buttons turn red. I use a red filter on the screen to darken
it more, so the things that are red becomes invisible. How do I
change the text color in red mode? It's not the red.css file; that's
only for reports, etc.

Thanks.

I don't believe these can be changed, Paul - it's "hard coded" in SkyMap,
unfortunately.

And I dim my screen in normal mode, and use a neutral density filter rather
than red. I've found this much easier to read with all programs - no
blue/green elements disappearing etc, and when imaging the images are much
clearer on screen.

Sorry, but I honestly cannot remember. Though I found quite a few suppliers
in the UK with a web search, one was particularly helpful - they normally
supply large rolls on a commercial basis, but sold me a metre length very
cheaply - and didn't even charge postage :).

I found it generally comes in two densities 0.6 and 0.9 (that is 40% and 10%
transmission). I bought the 0.6 stuff, but find I have to use two layers
(that works out at 16% transmission) to dim my laptop down sufficently, so
buying the 0.9 version sounds a better bet next time round.

I'll let you know if I dig out who the supplier was.

C/2006 VZ13 is nearing its peak on light curve – see
http://www.aerith.net/comet/catalog/2006VZ13/2006VZ13.html
This is presently the brightest comet in the sky. It will be fading
in a week or so.

It is racing though Draco at 8.4 arc seconds per minute at magnitude
~ 8.4. I was limited to 45 second exposures when I imaged it to
avoid blur.

Let me know what you think of the movie. Note that I have really
squashed the file size to permit rapid down load. It is only 679 kB.

It was really hard for me to stretch all the frames the same because
the high cirrus cloud layer was rapidly changing. I had to manually
adjust each frame to match the previous one. I've probably invested
six hours in image processing and composing the web page.

Images, associated data, eyepiece view, imaging notes and *movie*
all at
http://home.att.net/~dpersyk/new.htm

I am always amazed at how SkyMap's depepiction of the stars matches
up with my images! I've included some screen shots of SkyMap in my
web page above to compare with the images I took.

Please take a look and give me some feedback. This was quite a
processing challenge for me. Thank you for visiting my site.

Hello:

I'm uploading a comet orbital path example to a wiki article and using
an example from SMP (with credit, if I can figure out the graphics).
I'm considering this fair use and advising wikipedia as such but am
also putting up a note here and will check back to see if this is a

Provided you've bought the program (ie you're not using the demo version) this
is perfectly OK, yes.

Oh yes. I've owned at least three versions of SMP including the
current. Assuming SMP11 is current.

I'm not sure how the magazines work in terms of the software they use
for their numerous sky graphics. If one submitted an article to them
with sky map pro listed as the credit (typically in fine print on the
edge, the way photographs are) is that acceptable? I have no
immediate plans, just want to know how it works.

I guess it IS fast but it all depends on your point of view. E2
Lovejoy moved much faster I think.

Anyhow Dennis I wnated to thank you for calling this comet to my

My observing partner and I looked at it last Friday night and we were both
amazed at how bright it was. We estimated the mag around 7.8 from near
Jacksonville FL (we were at our dark sky site). 90 minutes passed between
observations and we could see the definate motion when compared to the
background of stars.

C/2006 VZ13 is about at its peak on the light curve. This is
presently the brightest comet in the sky. It is fading now.

It is racing though Draco at 9.3 arc seconds per minute at
magnitude ~ 8.4. I was limited to 60 second exposures when I
imaged it to avoid blur.

The comet has an ion tail that I had difficulty bringing out in my
processing. It is just barely apparent in my stack of 40 x 60s.
However, I was able to bring out what appears to be a 15 arc minute
tail using the Larson-Sekanina filter in AstroArt 3.0. I realize
this is a somewhat "dangerous" filter since one can easily introduce
no end of interesting artifacts. I would thus appreciate feedback
from the comet cognoscenti (and everyone else) on whether my
processing is legitimate.

Images, associated data, imaging notes at
http://home.att.net/~dpersyk/new.htm

Please take a look and give me some feedback. Thank you for
visiting my site.

Chris,

I was hoping to locate confirm the position of Pluto last night to other
field stars. However I cannot see stars down to mag 13.9 on Skymap in
this region. Do you know why?

For the record, if I go else where in the sky I can get down to 15th Mag.

I really cannot confirm the position of Pluto. I see more stars in the
eyepiece than the chart will show. Must be a hole in the GSC in this region.

Thanks.

The GSC aims to have a pretty much constant "density" of stars - I think its
goal is one star per square arc minute, or something like that.
Consequently, the limiting mag varies from about 13 to 15 in different parts
of the sky, according to the star density. Broadly speaking it goes "deeper"
the further away from the Milky Way that you get.

Bear in mind that the GSC was not created as an astronomical data catalog,
but as an engineering tool with which to point the Hubble Space Telescope.

Chris

Chris,

I have created a USNO A-2.0 stellar data catalog for the area that Pluto
will be in.

Pluto will stay inside the boundaries of this catalog until July 2010,
when it will then transit the M24 star cloud.

Turn off the GSC and turn on this catalog. This catalog goes as deep as
Mag 14.2. Catalog is about 7Mb. I have checked it against a DSS image
and the resolution is exact.

Download from;
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~michellekemp/Pluto.htm

If you could post to the Skymap website rather than mine sometime soon,
as I will remove my page in about 2 weeks.

Also, if someone wants a smaller copy just for 2007, I can make that
available as well.

Cheers.

Sorry, Paul - I'm afraid that's a little too large for the web site! If
people could download it from Paul's site while it's still there, I'd
appreciate it.

Hi folks
I have SMP10 and trying to get the latest comet data.
I go to download data/download comet data it seems to download fine
(185 comets as of yesterday) I then get asked if I want to use the
downloaded data as the default comet catalogue which I accept.
I then go to Search/Comet and there are no comets in the list??.
Its not been a problem before and wondered if there is a fault with
the current comet data catalogue?
Cheers
Steve

I reentered the url for the Comets and it seems to download ok but
nothing in the comet listings?. The
http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/Ephemerides/Comets/Soft01Cmt.txt
site seems to be working ok. Wondered why SMP can`t seem to see it??

Hmmmm. I was going to ask you if you'd changed the download URL to the
current one, but clearly if it worked yesterday that's not the problem!

Have you tried simply opening the catalog manually?

Chris

Got it now Chris thanks.
Had to shut down SMP then start it again and all the comets are listed
now.

I did just that Chris.

If Michelle does not mind I will also make it available at:

ftp://hometown.aol.com/astronomyW4WMM/USNO-A2-Pluto.zip

OR

http://tinyurl.com/2tlvof

Both lead to the exact same place; a 1.96 MB file.
