You can use the induction motor-generator without grid
connection. Here is a web site with several examples
of small induction generators used to generate AC power
away from the grid, using small gasoline engines as
the motivator.

Subject: [a-w-h] Induction Generators
Hello Group
The recent postings about induction motors used as
generators prompts a question thats been on my mind for some time.
Would it be possible to produce an artifical "Grid" electronically. Some
kind of inverter to produce a low power 3 phase signal, just enough to
excite the machine and switch on load to simulate the restraining
effect of the grid on the generator speed.
Has this been done or am i fantisiseing again.
Regards Brian
