Hello All
I have an olivetti philos 44 (486SL laptop with 4 MB of ram, 120MB
HDD, PCMCIA 10MBPS NIC and a propriatery sound card!!!!). It
recently got Small Linux 0.7.5. It works like a charm i must
confess. However, there are a couple of questions that i would like
to ask:
1. Is there any support for PCMCIA in 0.7.5? If not do i need to
recompile the kernel to include that? It would be so great to have
that network card up and running.
2. Regarding compiling the kernel. What would be a linux
distribution most closely resembling Small Linux? I am thinking of
installing that one in some machine and do all the compiling in that
one and then transfer files to the laptop. Oh and another
thing...why isnt the kernel compiled for multithreading? (while i
was copying some files from the floppy i switched to another
terminal and tried to logon but it only proceeded after the copy was
finished :-( )
3. Is there any package containing all the necessary files to
install gcc 2.7.2.3? (I am talking about getting the initial
compiler and libs needed)
Thanks in advance for any help you wish to provide.

Hi Dear,
I couldn't understand what you need, clearly.
But about compiling kernel and needed drivers in order to supporting network device I can give you some help:
In order to have network device on PCMCIA you should to select that’s options in kernel configuration file. (Better it select as module [M] ). Then you need to run PCMCIA modules in your small linux before running each drivers module. For example in kernel 2.6.8 you should run these:
Insmod pcmcia-core,ko
Insmod pcmcia.ko
…
If you have a wireless network device on PCMCIA bus, you can also download WLan drivers form http://www.madwifi.net/. There are many useful instructions for you. Its better that you check this page http://www.madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility for supported drivers by Madwifi.
Regarding compiling the kernel it is good idea. You can compile and build your Linux on another machine then transfer them to your laptop.
Have fun,
Ali Paikan.
