Web Services Interop Plug-fest – 18-20 March 2008

Microsoft Corporation would like to invite you to a 3-day Web Services Interop Plug-fest on Tuesday March 18, 2008 to Thursday March 20, 2008 from 09:30am to 5pm each day.

The Interop Plug-fest is an ad-hoc, open forum for companies who have implementations of various Web Services protocols to meet with engineers from the Connected Systems Division and test against Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation / .NET Framework 3.5 and some upcoming products.

Plug-fest attendees should bring their own laptops, their implementations and any other tools they feel would be useful. Scenario documents are available to attendees of the plug-fest before the event, and progress of interoperating implementations will be tracked throughout the event. An internet connection will be available during the plug-fest.

The focus of these plug-fest meetings is on interop testing, so no feedback will be taken on the WS-* specifications themselves. As a result, there is no requirement to sign any feedback agreement or other legal agreement before attending this plug-fest.

This plug-fest will be held at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA – see full address details below.

Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks will be served, but participants will be responsible for their own dinner arrangements on most if not all evenings. Please make any special dietary requirements known in advance, and every effort will be made to accommodate them.

This plug-fest event is open to anyone who desires to participate and who can bring an implementation to test interoperability with Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation product in any or all of the following areas:

  • Basic Messaging Scenarios using protocols: SOAP (1.1, 1.2), WS-Addressing (2004/08, 1.0), MTOM
  • Message Security Scenarios using WS-Security (1.0, 1.1), WS Secure Conversation (2005/02, 1.3), WS-Trust (2005/02, 1.3), Username Token Profile (1.0, 1.1), X509 Token Profile (1.0, 1.1), SAML Token Profile (1.0, 1.1), Kerberos Token Profile 1.1.
  • STS - Security Token Service scenarios
  • Reliable Messaging using WS-ReliableMessaging (1.0 (2005/02), 1.1)
  • Transactions using WS-AtomicTransaction (1.0 (2004/10), 1.1) and WS-Coordination (1.0 (2004/10), 1.1)
  • WS-Policy (1.2 (2004/09), 1.5) and WS-MetadataExchange (2004/09) are included in several scenarios
  • Possibly, WS-Federation (using scenarios from the WS-Federation TC at OASIS)

Scenarios documents and online test endpoints are provided to help preparation for the event at http://mssoapinterop.org/ilab/ Please let us know the scenarios of primary interest to you at this event.

In addition, Microsoft plans to extend the available scenarios to better cover the ratified specifications and to address requests we’ve heard from you. More as we get the information onto http://mssoapinterop.org/ilab/Please let us know of additional areas you believe need test coverage as soon as possible.

In addition to the usual interop testing, we may also do further detailed chalk-talks like the July event’s discussion of how to implement CardSpace support within any product that supports WS-Trust. Please let us know if you have particular areas where you’d like such a deep dive.

If you are interested in participating, please reply to Doug Bunting (mailto:douglas.r.bunting@...) and Pasi Rikkinen (mailto:pasir@...).

We also recommend you join the WS-Builders@yahoogroups.com discussion group and use it for any questions around scenarios documents and WCF endpoints.

Feel free to pass this invitation along, either in your company or elsewhere. This is an open forum. No invitation is required, but an RSVP is appreciated by the event hosts to facilitate accurate logistics planning. The list of attendees and general plug-fest results will be made public after the event.

Thank you and we look forward to your participation.

To all who have not yet responded,

Don’t despair.  We’ve moved the event to a larger room and can accept new attendees up until the end of day next Monday, the 29th.  I likely will not be able to adjust the logistics after that time.

I’ll need some information up front: Please include names, email addresses, and dietary preferences for attendees if responding between now and that deadline.

thanx very much,

Hi builders,

About a year ago, RC1 of the SOAP over Java Message Service spec was
released. See http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/ws-axis-dev/

3C80A43FC052CE3949A327527DCD5D6B27020FB65C@...

I wonder what the current status of this spec is. Is there a more
recent version? Is the spec implemented by any SOAP Stack?

Thanks,

Hi Ian,

Once you have the WSDL of the Web Service you can use any of the
available tools which allow you to parse the WSDL and create a SOAP
message. Once you have a handle on the SOAP message you can send the
same through to your web site.

The tools that I know of are AXIS (java and C++ support), XFire (java
support as far as I know) and gSOAP (C++ support)

Hope that helps you.

Regards

Nilesh

Web Services Interop Plug-fest – 10-12 July 2007

Microsoft Corporation would like to invite you to a 3-day Web Services Interop Plug-fest on Tuesday July 10, 2007 to Thursday July 12, 2007 from 09:30am to 5pm each day.

The Interop Plug-fest is an ad-hoc, open forum for companies who have implementations of various Web Services protocols to meet with engineers from the Connected Systems Group and test against the upcoming version of Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation / .NET Framework 3.0 products.

Plug-fest attendees should bring their own laptops, their implementations and any other tools they feel would be useful. A scenario document is available to attendees of the plug-fest before the event, and progress of interoperating implementations will be tracked throughout the event.

An internet connection will be available during the plug-fest.

Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks will be served, but participants will be responsible for their own dinner arrangements.

Please make any special dietary requirements known in advance, and every effort will be made to accommodate them.

This plug-fest event is open to anyone who desires to participate and who can bring an implementation to test interoperability with Microsoft's Windows Communication Foundation product in any or all of the following areas:

  • Basic Messaging Scenarios using protocols: SOAP1.1, SOAP1.2, WS-Addressing 2004/08 and 2005/10, MTOM
  • Message Security Scenarios using WS-Security 1.0, WS-Security 1.1, WS Secure Conversation 2005/02, WS-Trust 2005/02, Username Token Profile (1.0, 1.1), X509 Token Profile (1.0, 1.1), SAML Token Profile (1.0, 1.1), Kerberos Token Profile 1.1.
  • STS - Security Token Service scenarios
  • Reliable Messaging using WS-ReliableMessaging v1.0 (2005/02)
  • Transactions using WS-AtomicTransaction v1.0 (2004/10) and WS-Coordination v1.0 (2004/10)
  • WS-Policy v1.2 (2004/09) and WS-Metadata Exchange (2004/09) are included in several scenarios
  • Windows CardSpace scenarios

In addition, Microsoft welcomes participants to test against our pre-release version of .NET Framework 3.5 (codename Orcas) for interop testing of the recently standardized RX, SX and TX OASIS standard versions of the specifications:

  • Message Security Scenarios using WS Secure Conversation v1.3 (2005/12), WS-Trust v1.3 (2005/12)
  • RX - Reliable Messaging using WS-Reliable Messaging v1.1 (2007/02)
  • Transactions using WS-Atomic Transaction v1.1 (2006/06) and WS-Coordination v1.1 (2006/06)
  • WS-Policy v1.5

Scenarios documents and online test endpoints are provided to help preparation for the event at
http://mssoapinterop.org/ilab/

In addition to the usual interop testing, we are also hoping to have engineers from the Microsoft Federated Identity Team provide a detailed tutorial on how to implement CardSpace support within any product that supports WS-Trust.

If you are interested in participating, please reply to Jorgen Thelin (jthelin@...)

Hello Group

I am a true newbie, new to this group and new to SOAP technology. I've
developed an application with Btrieve 6.15 and have a few XML files as
a result.

I need to connect to a website via a SOAP message. I also have a WSDL
file but do not know how to proceed. I understand that I may have to
send the information as a data stream through a socket?

My clients would have to upload information to this site regularly, so
I'd like a solution which can be integrated with my application.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ian

Hi Gregor,

I have not had the opportunity to experiment with the situation that you described, but I have encountered issues with the opposite - meaning, I cannot consume 'untyped' types such as Dataset in .NET from Java based clients (including Apache).  I believe the issue is the same.

One thing I can suggest is to have the web service 'take apart' the hashtable, which in Java is really a collection of tuples of "key" and "value", insert them in an array of Items and send them over. If you do not have the luxury of modifying the web service, create another web service, based in Java, consume the web service and then do the 'translation' into an array. This way, the .NET client can safely consume this data.

What do you think?

Hi,

I want to consume an Apache Webservice with a C# .NET Client.
Everything works fine, but I'm having problem with the deserialization
of the complex type "Item" that is included in the response of the web
service, what seems so be the type "hashtable" in .NET. Every "Item"
consists of two fields "key" and "value".

I read a lot about SOAP/Apache/.NET/Complex Types/etc. and somewhere I
read that there is no automatic deserialization possible of such a type.
Does anyone know a HowTo-Example or Codesnippet? Or can somebody
explain how to consume Complex Types from Apache?
I didn't find any helpful postings or Code Examples…

I'm looking forward to your replies!

Best regards,
Gregor

Team,

I need help.  I am trying to get information to build a soap web service using PERL::SOAP and I do not have access to the WDSL or do not know the exact address of the wdsl.

In other words, I have a wdsl that is used to create a ticket at www.server.com/Ticket.asmx and when i add ?WDSL to the end of it, I get the wdsl however, I want to do other things that are on other WDSL using soap but do not know the address.

Is there any way to find out where the WDSL is?  This is for a virtual ticketing system that requires logging in.   If I can login and create/modify and get reports on tickets, why can I not also use the web service so that I am able to do it via the command line?

I tried a UDDI sniffer like stylus studio but, it did not work.

Hope you understand this…

Thanks,

Jody

Subject: Web Services Metadata Exchange Interoperability Workshop - April 10-12, 2007
auburnmarshes
Online Now Online Now
Send Email Send Email

Dear SOAP Builders members:

WSO2 and the authors of the WS-Metadata Exchange specification would like to invite you to attend a 3-day Interoperability Workshop covering the Web Services Metadata Exchange specifications, to be hosted by WSO2 on April 10-12th, 2007 in Auburn, California (45 minutes northeast of Sacramento, CA).

To attend this event, the attached feedback agreement MUST be reviewed and signed by each attendee - either before or at the workshop event. The purpose of the feedback agreement is to ensure that everyone involved in influencing the specifications is committed to keeping the specification royalty free. Also, as this is an Interoperability Workshop, participants will need to bring an implementation based on the specifications below.

The 3-day interoperability workshop is an ad-hoc, open forum for companies who have implementations based on the WS-Metadata Exchange specifications published in August 2006, and who want to test their implementations with other companies' implementations.  Attendees must bring their own laptops, their implementations and any other tools they feel would be needed; testing among all attendees will occur throughout the day.  A scenario document for use in the Interoperability Workshop is provided in this invitation. Progress of interoperating implementations will be tracked throughout the event.

This workshop will be held in the Executive Boardroom at the Holiday Inn in Auburn, California (see below for location details).

A wireless internet connection will be available during the workshop.

The workshop will be scheduled from 9:00am - 5:00pm Pacific Standard Time each day.  Continental breakfast, lunch, and morning and afternoon coffee service will be provided.   Participants will be responsible for their own dinner arrangements.  Please make any special dietary requirements known in advance, and every effort will be made to accommodate them.  There is no fee associated with this event, but any travel expenses are the responsibility of the attendee.

As with previous workshops, these events are open to anyone who desires to participate and who can bring an implementation based on the WS-Metadata Exchange specification listed above.

If you are interested in participating, please reply to jonathan@... and provide the following information:

A.               Your name

B.               The proper name of the company that you represent.  (e.g. International Business Machines Corporation instead of just IBM)

C.               The name of the implementation/product that you will be bringing to test.  (If confidential, then do not provide.)

D.               Special dietary restrictions, if any.

A signed feedback agreement (see attachment below) must be faxed to Mike Kaiser at 1-845-489-9958.  All Interoperability Workshop attendees are required to have provided a signed before participating in the event.

Feel free to pass this invitation along, either in your company or elsewhere.

This is an open forum.  No invitation is required, but an RSVP is appreciated by the event hosts to facilitate accurate logistics planning.  The list of attendees and general workshop results will be made public after the workshop.

Thank you and we look forward to your participation.

Jonathan Marsh

Director of Architecture, Mashup Technologies

Time:  9am - 5pm Pacific Standard Time, continental breakfast at 8:30AM.

Dates:  April 10-12, 2007

For those wishing to extend their stay for some spring skiing, Lake Tahoe and its numerous ski resorts is about an hour away.

Jonathan Marsh of WSO2 is planning to host a get-together on Wednesday night at his home overlooking Lake Folsom, about 15 min south of town.

Traveling to Auburn:

The nearest significant airport is Sacramento International (SMF).  A small and convenient airport, it is served regularly from both the major airports on the West Coast (SFO, LAX, SEA), but also from major airports eastward (ORD, DEN).

http://www.sacairports.org/int/index.html

The airport is about 15 min north of Sacramento, and about 45 minutes from Auburn (driving directions http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&ss=yp.smf%20airport&cp=38.760292~-121.336315&style=r&lvl=10&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&rtp=pos.qfdhcy4w0ppd_6900%20Airport%20Blvd%2c%20Sacramento%2c%20CA~pos.qggdzp4x92mv_Auburn%2c%20CA).

A rental car is advised; it’s cheaper and more convenient to get a rental car than shuttle service (SMF – Auburn was $65 last time I used it.)  Outside of each terminal are bus stations – wait under the blue sign that says Rental Car for a short shuttle ride to the rental car terminal where seven of the major rental chains have counters.

Accommodations:

Auburn Holiday Inn and Convention Center

A bit nicer than your run-of-the-mill Holiday Inn, this is really Auburn’s only decent hotel.  (The local Comfort Inn has received some bad reviews.)  15 rooms have been reserved at the special rate of $104/night.  For this rate please reserve your room, mentioning the room block for the “WS-Metadata Exchange Workshop” before March 10th to get this rate. Reservations are available at (530) 887-8787 or (800) 465-4329.

Looks like many QName links are broken. You have to link port to
binding to portType to messages using QNames. Thats a namespace
qualified name. The first example I found was the link from the
service port to the binding. Notice the value of the binding
attribute: "ratings:SampleServiceSoapBinding" The ratings namespace
prefix is bound to the wrong namespace
(http://schemas.wamu.com/2006/07/LoanSampleRequest). The binding you
want is the one in the file, but it is defined in
"http://com/wamu/Sample" - the targetNamespace for the document.

In short figure out your namespaces and links. If you like grab a
copy of SOAPscope[1] (my company) to validate your WSDL and find this
error.

Hope this Helps,

Jim Murphy

I have a WSDL that was originally generated from a service in WebLogic
Workshop. It isn't validating, and I don't understand why. I'll attach
a slightly modified version of it at the end of this.

Line 76 (I mark that line below) has an error that says this:

"The input element is referencing an undefined message
'overrideRequest'. Check that the message name and namespace are correct
and that the message has been defined."

There are similar errors on lines 77, 80, and 81, and other errors
further on, because of these errors.

I'm sure that I'm making some mistake with namespaces or wsdl, but I'm
not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Folks,

FYI, For a while now, we've been building up a Stack comparison page
at the Apache WS Wiki site:
http://wiki.apache.org/ws/StackComparison

Yes, You can edit it and update existing information on that page.
Just click on the link at the top right corner and create an account
for yourself. Any discussion on the page contents can be on general AT
ws.apache.org (subscribe first by sending an email to
general-subscribe AT ws.apache.org). Since that's where the wiki
update notifications are directed to. You can also subscribe to the
wiki notifications by clicking on the subscribe link.

thanks,

I second that!!! Since there are so many messages on this subject and there are passionate views on both sides, maybe they can create a new yahoo group and take this lively discussion offline.

Thanks.

Please, can we stop the product plugging on this list? It's getting
rather pathetic.

Thanks,

Paul,

SOAP is very much alive, and I agree with your point that when
considering web services that are doing any type of real work, you
cannot simply assume away things like addressing and security.

Having said that, there is also a tendency, especially from platform and
toolkit builders, to assume that all of that expensive processing is
going to be done at the endpoint; in the software.

I would argue that, that particular view is... Limiting.

I personally am a firm believer in separating, to the greatest extent
possible, the business logic (the stuff that travels in the SOAP body)
from the infrastructure functionality (the stuff that travels in the
SOAP header). And current technology capabilities allow one to just
this. As an example, security processing of SOAP messages (digital
signatures, xml encryption/decryption etc.) is an expensive process that
I would normally outsource to something like a hardware box like an XML
Security Gateway which can do that processing at wire speed.

Which to a great extent reinforces the view that one needs to look at
performance engineering end to end and should seek to optimize where you
can get the biggest bang for the buck. And that very well may not be at
the SOAP layer, but in the business logic processing.

And taking away databinding does not in any way shape or form take away
from the usefulness of SOAP. I am coming more and more to the viewpoint
that moving away from databinding allows one to focus on the core of
what SOA and web services are about, the exchange of messages. And not
the issues dealing with the "object-ification" of XML.

Regards,

- Anil

Yup, I see no SOAP!

Sorry, when you remove databinding, and dismiss headers as being
heavyweight, I wonder what I'm being asked to get excited about not
being slow: <xsl:copy-of select="document()/soap:Envelope/soap:Body" /

Paul,

Use AXIOM, See even the REST guys are using it :)

st

Just look at the performance numbers for processing a huge feed that
they posted. Yes, adding soap headers won't slow us (Axis2) down :)

Ah, so we learnt earlier how SOAP headers
aren't the 80 case, and now should just use
just use XML because databinding is evil.

I wonder where the baby is now we've tossed out
the SOAP bath water.
