A DELICIOUS MEAL OF TRADITIONAL VEGETABLES (INSTANT MBOGA).
Kenya has been for the past and in recent memories faced with severe
famines.
Sadly this miserable situation is not new, and is not expected to end
until permanent solutions are put in place.
Huruma childrens' home (www.hchngong.org) which is 40 kilometers away
from the City center of Nairobi, has come up with a demonstration
project on potential food production.
Huruma cater for children affected and infected with H.I.V and also
extend home based care to H.I.V patients around the community.
The home advocates for taking good food nutritional value and
maintaining good health status critical in H.I.V management- which
could mean many years of life even after H.I.V infection.
This is why they have come up with a pilot farm product-instant mboga
(veges).
In the farm, they grow various traditional green vegetables that are
consumed in the home and also marketed in Kenya's urban areas.
The veges include spider plant (saga, mwangani), night shade (mnavu,
osuga, lisutsa), amaranthus (mchicha, terere, tsimbuka), pumpkin
leaves, and solanum.
Huruma which means mercy encourages youths to get involved in such
sustainable food production ventures.
Youths should take advantage of the currently available Ksh 1 billion
youth entrepreneurship fund launched through the strategic efforts of
the Government.
Youths can access these loans to put up farm projects that may
ultimately, help the community, Kenyans economic power, homes, and
youth/women groups involved in providing home based care and helping
H.I.V patients to manage their health's.
In the next entry, I will explore more on the production of some of
these vegetables, their market potential and one selected recipe.
