Dear Group Members,

We would like to draw your attention to our new project which was
recently approved for the 30-m IRAM telescope, operating at millimetre
and submillimetre wavelengths.

We wish to perform a pilot study aimed at first ever observation of
parent molecules in a sungrazing comet from the Kreutz group. As you
may know, little is known about these comets, except that they
originate from a common body which broke up centuries ago. Our
ultimate goal is to compose a sample of several comets with at least
two molecules well detected. This will enable us to compare the
relative molecular abundances in their comae, and thereby to address
an intriguing question whether the interior of the progenitor body was
chemically differentiated or not, with important cosmogonic
implications. According to our estimations, the brightest sungrazers
from this group may be possibly detected with the IRAM 30-m telescope
-- but surprisingly no one has ever tried to characterize their
composition this way. The project is a joint initiative of myself
(Jagiellonian University, Krakow), Dr. Michal Drahus (University of
California at Los Angeles) and Dr. Clemens Thum (IRAM institute,
Grenoble).

The project may be realized anytime between 1 Dec., 2009 and 31 May,
2010, when a sufficiently bright comet appears. To secure that a
potentially good target won't be missed...

WE KINDLY ASK YOU TO HELP!

We need help from possibly large number of experienced SOHO comet
hunters, to alert us about sufficiently bright comets as soon as they
will get discovered in C3. Any observer who will declare to
collaborate with us by: (1) regularly monitoring the SOHO reports and
C3 images, and (2) providing us with immediate reports on the
brightest comets, will receive detailed information about the project,
including instructions on how to react when the bright thing appears.
If you are interested -- please reply privately to this e-mail.

Best Regards,
Michal Kusiak

Hi All,

Sorry for the "noise" on the Sungrazer pages -- I haven't checked comets
in
a while and didn't realize the sensor was flipped right now (fits files
are upside down). Should have figured that there's no way such a bright
comet would get missed (no matter where it appeared in the field of
view).

Hi Alan,

You misunderstood my message -- my posts to Sungrazer were erroneous,
not because
the comet wasn't real. It's that I didn't realize the images were
rotated 180
degrees. So Kreutz comets would be coming in from the upper left. What
I
reported was an extremely obvious Kreutz that had already been
long-since
reported.

I see the very bright non-group comet you're talking about in Stereo-B.
It's
not clear to me whether it would be visible in LASCO C3 or not. It might
be too far out of the C3 field of view (out of the frame to the right).

I checked three C2 comets reported by you and...:

I see something like possible Kreutz

I can't even see it in C3, so it's unlikely to be visible from Earth! :)

Are you sure your coordinates are correct? I see no comet there, and certainly
not a bright one.

Infact we have see more brighter comet!!!

Hi Toni and Karl,

I saw that Eryk confirmed this non-group in Sungrazer website.
For me comet looks good, but I would like to see it in C2, to be sure.
This non-group should be visible in C2 at ~15:54 UT.

Best wishes,
Michal

Hi Michal, Karl and all.

Unfortunately actually the last C2 image is at 20:39
I hope that the other images are in delay, but there is also the possibility
that the comet re-appear in C3.

At soon
Toni

Good work Michal. The rms is high clearly due to the short time of observation.

Hi Toni,

I think it is the low resolution of LASCO C3 images to be blamed for the great
residual. I find that the position measured in Astrometrica with STEREO and SOHO
images is tend to interfered by noises or other dots brighter than the
background value.

Cheers,
WenTao

Hi Wen.

Yes, I agree, the low resolution is one of the causes of great residuals.
There is also the probably that the comet is too fainter to see in stereo or not
pass in the fiels.

Regards,
Toni

Hi Toni,

I think it is the low resolution of LASCO C3 images to be blamed for the great
residual. I find that the position measured in Astrometrica with STEREO and SOHO
images is tend to interfered by noises or other dots brighter than the
background value.

Cheers,
WenTao

Hi Toni,

Your comet was visible in LASCO C2 images from 2009-11-23, 15:54 - 17:54 UT

Nov 24 2009 16:54:31
Known comet now entering:
Images: C2; 1024x1024 images.

I haven't found your comet yet, on the other side of sun.
I think that he didn't survive the perihelion.
