Greetings everyone!

I can't figure it out by myself. Please, help.

Sergey Shurpakov claimed a potential Kreutz-group comet in C3:

Nov 07 2011 18:31:57
Potential comet:
Images: C3; 1024x1024 images.
(0,0) Upper Left.
2011/11/07
    Kreutz group comet.
2154 631 676
2206 630 674
2218 627 672
2230 625 669
--Sergey Shurpakov

Then I claimed a potential Kreutz-group comet in C2:

Nov 07 2011 18:34:13
Potential comet:
Images: C2; 1024x1024 images.
(0,0) Upper Left.
20111107
    Kreutz group comet.
2236 711 1018
2312 687 990
2324 681 980
--Sergei Schmalz

which turned out to be a real one.

Now, I'm not sure if Sergey's claim is true, and if it is, then whether is it
the same comet?

Usually, a C3-comet coming from below the sun becomes visible in C2 images at
the Y-value of ~650. So, my comet is already visible in C2 at 22:36, which is
only 6 minutes after 22:30 in Sergey's claim, so his claimed object should be
around the Y-value of 667 or 668 at 22:36 , which is still 17-18px away from
650. So, in my opinion Sergey Shurpakov's claimed object is not the same with
mine. What is your opinion?

With best regards
Sergei Schmalz

Hi Sergei,

I think you are right.
I use Y=642 for the lower border of C2 in rotated C3 images
so Sergey's positions are even farther away from C2.

Greetings!

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me, that Alan Watson confirmed
at Dec 11 2011 22:31:06 Rob Matson's C3 Kreutz-group comet reported at Dec 11
2011 19:43:14, which earlier already was reported by Zhijian Xu on C2 at Dec 11
2011 11:04:39 and confirmed by Tony Hoffman at Dec 11 2011 11:40:15. That's the
same comet, check it! In C3 it is at 15:06 in 445 645, as reported by Rob, and
the Y=645 is around the position on the Y-axis, when a Kreutz-group comet coming
up from below the Sun enters the C2 field of view, around the same time
Zhijian's reported comet appeard at the bottom border of C2.

With best regards
Sergei

yes you might be right, apologies if it works out that way.
I was not too sure of the timing into C2,

Hi Zhijian/Sergei,

I'm sure you are right. I mainly posted it because no
one else had reported it in C3 and I thought the
additional data might be helpful.

Rob

Will my discovery be considered ?

Gidday Mr Wyatt,
please see this updated blog entry(scroll down) with images of the little
kreutz, well not so little really as it has produced a nice tail finally in
SOHO C2 images. I would say that this is a good prelude to Lovejoy
http://cometal-comets.blogspot.com/2011/12/comet-c2011-w3-lovejoy.html

Hello Salil!

This one will be certainly considered as a co-discovery with Szymon (that's why
he confirmed your report)!

As for the time tolerance, we had confirmed co-discoveries of reports within up
to ~25 seconds. A report with a delay over 30 seconds will not get a
co-discovery credit.

With best regards

Sergei

Hello Karl and everyone!

Karl, I just wanted to ask a question regarding your last report:

Dec 14 2011 12:27:04 Mr Sungrazer
All,
I see in the SECCHI HI-1B images a fairly obvious small companion to Lovejoy. I
suspect
that this is the fragment first reported by Zhijian.
Karl

In the SECCHI image the fragment is moving parallelly just side by side with the
nucleus, whereas Zhijian's reported object on the C3 images is way ahead of it.
If you suspect it to be the same object, how could it speed up and pass by the
nucleus, is that really possible? Or do I misunderstand the geometry between the
two as seen in the SECCHI and C3 images?

WIth best regards
Sergei

the SOHO and the STEREO spacecrafty are in different positions in space. Thus
the
different spatial perspective.

Jiangao, thank you for checking it! I also asked Alexander Godunov to view it,
so we have now at least two persons who could confirm Bo's claim, I just couldnt
see his object well and was waiting for someone else more experienced to do
that. I have retracted now my confirmation that I'd given to Rafal.

With best regards

Sergei

The date name is not wrong, the image of 18:42 is a mixture of two images - of
18:42 and 22:06 - you can see that by the star positions. This mixture always
happens, when SOHO begins to send new data and in the very beginning sends an
image from the last session.

To be honest, I also saw this C3 Kreutz-group comet in the image of 18:42 and
could report it, but I thought it wouldnt be fair, so I didnt report it and was
just honestly waiting for the next 3rd image, just like everyone else did for
sure....

Any idea what caused these streaks? (Presumably it's not an invasion fleet.)
An imaging artifact, or possible debris or outgassing from the SOHO
spacecraft?

Comet Lovejoy survived perihelion and two science communities celebrated. Now
it's time to bring the communities together to advance our knowledge in both
solar and comet physics. This is a preliminary announcement for a 2-day
workshop to be held in Boulder, Colorado, USA on March 21 and 22, 2012 to
maximize the science return from this rare opportunity.

The remarkable journey of C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy) has been and will continue to be
chronicled by the dizzying array of solar and astrophysical missions currently
deployed in space and telescopes on the ground and by the large community of
amateur comet observers. The impressive observations of instruments on SOHO,
SDO, Hinode, STEREO, and Proba-2 in particular provide a wealth of data that can
be used to address many solar physics questions.

However, solar physics must combine with the planetary crowd in order to do so.
There are many questions that are relevant to both communities and whose answers
are needed to properly interpret these data. What was the precise orbit of the
comet? What was the dust size and distribution as a function of time? What was
the nucleus' size and composition? And there will be many others.

Given the extensive role the amateur comet community has played throughout the
SOHO and STEREO missions, we want to make sure you know that you are invited as
well.

We are working to set up an e-mail list to facilitate discussion about C/2011 W3
and a web site to share data. A conference website and call for papers will be
forthcoming.

In the meantime, the Yahoo Group "Comet Lovejoy Workshop" has been established
as a site where we will post information about the workshop as it becomes
available. You can also use it to tell us if you are interested in attending
the workshop.
