Hi Terry and all.
I agree with Cindy Kvale that the 100 km "standard" is great for
students. There is something very concrete about racing for 100 K. I
also think it makes the race more interesting for the pit crew as the
math is more challenging (trying to figure out how long the race will be
based on available sunlight, battery usage, battery capacity, and avg.
bike speed).
I think changing the cones would be fine.
I'm not in favor of replacing the sprint. Logistically I think it would
be hard to close the course for a time on Saturday evening and all day
on Sunday. I also don't want students trying to drive a car built for
efficiency like a race car. I'm afraid it would encourage them to take
chances that they would not take during the 100 k event.
We are looking forward to some sun!
Best,
Mark

I built a solar powered R/C car over the winter and really want to see
what it can do and see what others are doing with solar to get the most
from the sun. I live in Springfield, MO so Neosho is a short trip for
me.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Building_a_Solar_Powered_RC_car/
I though if SBR like the concept of solar R/C cars they could add the
event as another cost effective rayce format. Solar R/C cars have a
following in France, and I think we can do better. I was pricing the
full sized cars and most teams have budgets of over $200,000 and I was
able to build a highly capible r/c car for $500.
I haven't heard of a confirmed date on the event, so that would be good.
After consulting with my team, we support some of the proposed changes and not
others.
The change in the slalom test would be fine.
Making the sprint be a full lap time trial would be fine.
Shortening the race...well...that means that only a few teams would get the
satisfaction of finishing a 100 K race. Seeing the checkered flag at the end
means something to them! Being pulled off the track without finishing would be
a disappointment. We usually have a team or two that finish early, and one or
two that take longer (maybe a lot longer), but all of my riders want the chance
to "go the distance." For most of my riders, this is their only race
experience, and there's something magical about the "100 K" number. If you
changed it to be "most laps in 2.5 hr" then that would work, but then we can't
say we're going to a 100 K race. When we go out for publicity/sponsors we are
often asked "how far do you race?" I guess all this means we are in favor of
keeping the length of the race the same. Should we just start an hour earlier?
Here's hoping we all gather in Missouri under clear, sunny skies. I'm looking
forward to seeing you all again!

We have a solar car. Our kids built it in 2001 and raced it in 01 and 02. I also
Coach Track and Field. I just wanted to see if the dates had changed. I see they
haven't. The State Track and Field meet is the same week at the Solar car race.
I'll will had over the project to some other Science teacher.

I got some very light, but low power panels donated by Iowa Thin Film. They were
factory seconds, but functioned normally and being light were easy to mount on a
bike. Their power output is minimal however.
Lincoln has some old panels they haven't used the last couple years that they
might me willing to loan for pit charging. They have been wired for 24 volts.
Any higher voltage would be difficult but possible to do.

As it stands we will not be using the same track as last year but rather
one similar to that which we used in 2006 that goes around the

is nearly 2 miles around...and none of the "glass" paving we had issue
with last year..
Call or email if you have questions... Take care and travel safely..DE

Lincoln has an S class this year (if we get it done) and the Old Rocketman will
have a B class. What do we do for forms? I think I have some older ones on my
hard drive somewhere.

Cheryl,
I responded to your email back in March and indicated that we had a team
of college students from Northern Oklahoma College putting together a
Class A bike. I saw where other teams committed as well.
Have I missed something, because I have not received any data forms or
other communications about the event (now about two weeks away)?

Hi everyone,
Do we have a definite schedule out for this year? Is this rayce only
going to be Saturday and Sunday or will scrutineering start as it has
in the past? A couple of our team members will have to request time off.
Also, I must apologize for not updating the sponsorship thing sooner
but Phillips lighting, unfortunately passed on that idea. They allocate
a certain amount of funds every year and we were at the bottom of the
list and the only ones who got cut. Hopefully next year will be
different. We definately got their attention though.
The last item on my list concerns the Solarbike website. Is there
something I can do from my home computer to maintain the website and
keep it updated? I would be happy to take on some responsibility if I
can do it from here.
