On October 10th 2007, the NSSO (part of the US DOD in the Pentagon)
published their interim assessment report on Space Based Solar Power.
Since then, there has been some discussion on next steps.
Some of the study participants have suggested it would be valuable to
put together a desktop power beaming demonstrator, to take to
conferences and public events. This device would demonstrate to
stakeholders and the public that microwave power beaming actually
works, and that this is safe and real. There is nothing like actually
seeing it for yourself.
At present there is no funding from any government or commercial
source for such a device. The estimated cost would be a few thousand
US dollars for parts, labor and liability insurance.
The Team
Three key leaders of the Moon Society feel this is an interesting
idea, i.e. Peter Kokh (President), Charles Radley (Vice President)
and Scotty Gammenthaler (Chair of the Board). Preliminary discussion
with the rest of the Board of Directors and Advisors has been
encouraging.
