No, most all Sonys work the same way and refuse to boot from anything but
specific Sony peripherals. You'll need the docking station, or any of the Vaio
CD or DVD peripherals.

One alternative is to boot from a Sony floppy disk, most of the cheapo USB
floppy drives have a Y-E Data floppy controller in them, which 505's recognize
as Sony-supplied. In the "files" area of this group you can find a DOS boot
image
with cdrom drivers which will allow you to run most of the 98/2k/xp setup
utilities
from your CD drive after booting from floppy.

Hello, Can the Sony R505DL boot off a firewire Asus CD-RW drive that is not "Sony brand"? I do not have my docking station anymore, and I do not have access to...
