You misunderstand - It doesn't use USB. I took the back off the
machine, took out the hard drive, and put in a CF->IDE adapter and a
Compact Flash card - which pretty much IS a solid state drive, as
Compact Flash uses a native IDE interface. They've been around for
years, and to be honest, I'm surprised this whole SSD fetish didn't
start years ago. My machine is quick to boot and silent.

The USB on these machines is the old slow 12mb/s interface which you
would not want to run your OS from :-)
