I've read a lot about the Asus on the notebook forums - it's one of the
chief rivals to the TZ, but I like the familiar VAIO experience.

The SSDs are great - I'm planning to upgrade my TZ150 to one once they
come down in price a bit. I've got 60GB free on my 100GB drive, so I
figure the smaller capacity won't bother me. I store all of my video
files on a 500GB external drive anyway. I don't own a television or
stereo, so my TZ150 is pretty much my entertainment center, too.

I got an AUSUS eeepc 900 when they first came out. It runs Linux.
My 505TR is in Japan, but when I go back in August, I will bring it
back, put in a new HD and install Linux.

The AUSUS is extremely fast to boot up. It has a solidstate HD.
Only issue is that it takes time to get used to the tiny keyboard.

Alive, yes. Using my 505s - not so much. The 505G has been too slow for
most things I do for work for a while now, so I passed it on to my
nephew. I've still got my Z505 but I never use it and the CMOS is
apparently dead now - it prompted for the date last time I tried to use
it. I pretty much use my TZ150 for everything now - it's even
surplanted my C1 Picturebook, which I've used longer than any Sony I've
had. I'd LOVE a Sony is the same form factor as the C1 with the TZ's
features, though, even at the cost of a smaller display.

Anyone else still reading the list and activey using their 505?

Oops! Thanks for the correction -- So now I don't remember if I made the
same mistake back in February when I was looking, or if I had decided
against the TZ based on price.

Most of the TZs come with a built-in DVD burner (mine does). Only the
$3000+ top-of-the-lin models don't have one - they have a 250GB hard
drive in the bay instead, supplementing the 64- or 32-GB SSD.

Ordered directly from Sony Direct Accessories and Parts Center. The
actual broken part was the housing (bezel). The "Files" area of this
group has "VAIO Z505JS Service Diagrams.tif

" which gives you all the part numbers you'll need. I did get a new
latch and spring, just in case, but the bezel was definitely the most
expensive part (just under $40), while the latch, spring and latch
holder were about $15.

I finally retired my Z505-JSK a few months ago after the latch broke. I
decided I'd rather have a built-in DVD drive for traveling and that
ruled out the TZ series. I ended up with a CR rather than an SZ,
electing to save money rather than weight.

But I replaced the latch on the Z505 anyway. I haven't checked to see
whether the CMOS battery kept the date though.

Everyone here still alive? Stilll with ur 505 I see.

Still using my 650mhz Z505. The only thing am complainig these days
are the new flash contents, and some WMV files. Am thinking the cpu
can hack it, no prob, the prob is in the video system. For everyday
surfing though, hey, I don't need no new laptop! :D

NEW OLD FAN - a while back my fan developed a bad noise so I panicked
and scoured the NET for a replacement. No way though was I going to
spend usd$100+ from the outfits that were selling them. Fortunately, I
found one at eBay for like $30. Didn't install it though 'coz after I
cleaned the old one, the noise abated. Saving the extra one for down
the road I said. Yesterday was the day, and I thought, OK, time for
another cleaning, which I did, but this time the noise stayed. OK,
time to swap in that fan I bought a while back... WOW! whadda
difference. The new fan is basically totally silent! See what some
replacement part can do to an old laptop? :D (yes, I looked, the fan
is turning).

Been running on 512k for ~18 mos, 'coz I wanted to keep several
applications open simultaneously and am too impatient to wait for HD
to load. But that's proly it though, next upgrade will be a brand new
laptop... <sight> Sony 505s.. best looking notebook EVA.

It's definitely a rebuilt battery, these haven't been made for years.
It's almost certainly defective, but you might try removing the battery,
and holding the machine's power switch "on" for a full minute. Then
connect the battery, and finally, connect the charger. See if that
resets all the appropriate power circuitry.

No, most all Sonys work the same way and refuse to boot from anything but
specific Sony peripherals. You'll need the docking station, or any of the Vaio
CD or DVD peripherals.

One alternative is to boot from a Sony floppy disk, most of the cheapo USB
floppy drives have a Y-E Data floppy controller in them, which 505's recognize
as Sony-supplied. In the "files" area of this group you can find a DOS boot
image
with cdrom drivers which will allow you to run most of the 98/2k/xp setup
utilities
from your CD drive after booting from floppy.

Hello,

Can the Sony R505DL boot off a firewire Asus CD-RW drive that is
not "Sony brand"? I do not have my docking station anymore, and I do
not have access to my R505DL at the moment to confirm...my girlfriend
is coming back from Europe, and I would like to make sure I can format
the computer using the firewire CD-RW drive...thanks!

I recently acquired a 505 laptop with a 6gb HD and 64mb ram. I have
installed win98se on it (it had a copy of windows2000 on it, didnt want
to use it) but I am having trouble locating the drivers for all of the
internal parts (video, audio, modem, etc).

most of the links are from 2003 and no longer work. does anyone have
the windows 98 drivers and could they email them to me?

Hi everybody!

I recently managed to bring my dear old PCG-505F back from the dead.
Now I am looking to upgrade it with these old clip-on speakers (PCGA-
SP5) that look like Dumbo ears attached to the sides of the screen.
Unfortunately I can't find them anywhere on Google.

Does anyone here on the list have them and is willing to sell them to
me?

Please answer directly to

Thanks a lot!

( Sorry by french )

For hard drive, it is thikness and the consumption.

With 128mo, Windows 98 SE or Windows 2000. You can testing XP !

I have installing dual boot on 505FX ( Pentium I 266 MMX and 32Mo ), it is OK.
With 60 Mo, you can install 98, W2000 and XP.
10 Mo for 98, 10 Mo for W2000 ... and ... 20 Mo for XP. 20 Mo for Data and
backup is good.

Objet : [sony505] Wanted to get a N505VE up and running again for daughter...

                   Hi All,

I'm interested in getting my PCG-N505VE up and running again for my
daughter's use.

I've ordered a 60GB hard drive off the internet, and will be taking
the 6GB drive out and replacing it with the larger one. (Can anyone
see any potential problems?)

Since I'll have the drive out anyway, I can update it with whatever
operating system that suits my fancy.

This vaio has 128MB of RAM...so the question I have for you all is:
which OS do you recommend?

I'm tempted towards a lean Linux install simply because of lack of
power of the device, and lack of her experience.. .so no bad habits to
unlearn. However, there's the problem of Linux not playing DOS games
(which is one of her desires). How's WINE these days for games?

However, I've got Windows 2K installation disks from a million years
ago...but how compatible is W2K to low-power games?

I *could* install Windows XP (home or pro), but I understand that in
128MB it's too likely to thrash.

I *really* don't want to force Windows 98 down her throat. I'd be
busted for cruelty to children.

Any suggestions?

-Ken

least, XP preferred. A couple GB of ram, 60GB of hard-drive minimum.
She's going to want to be on facebook, and youtube, and other rich media
sites. What's your point?.....are you Amish?

Replacing the hdd for a 60gb is no problem as they are all of 9.5mm height type.
Though the original is of 8.5mm thickness it will still work as a close fit.
Actually there is a bit of free space with the original fitted as it is. But be
very careful while connecting the foil-connector from the old to the new. Its
very delicate. Carefully knife it out and fit it in.

OP should be w2k to be the best which ofcourse will need bios-flashing with
the latest in order to make all things work. But with the original bios wxp
works ok as it is, ofcourse slower.

Linux in any form is not fully ok for DOS yet. Nor w2k/xp for DOS. Here games
may still work.

So how about dual-booting, say 98 and something else ?

Since I'll have the drive out anyway, I can update it with whatever
operating system that suits my fancy.

This vaio has 128MB of RAM...so the question I have for you all is:
which OS do you recommend?

I'm tempted towards a lean Linux install simply because of lack of
power of the device, and lack of her experience...so no bad habits to

Yes, you can.
I have done it myself for my NE505VX.

The first process is to make the required bootable-floppy by using the BIOS
UPGRADE patch from the Sony site on another computer with a floppy drive. Then
to make a bootable CD using the same floppy image. This can be done via NERO.
And now use this CD and let the machine boot from the CD. Then everything is
very quickly done, much quicker than the floppy process.

The only problem is that you can not go back again to the old BIOS anymore
b'coz in the case of a CD it cannot write back to the media whereas in the case
of a floppy it does. But I don't think one would like to go back.

But unless you have problems with the present BIOS you should not go for an
upgrade. This is bit of a risky process, and any fault will render the machine
useless. If you plan to go for it then make sure that the battery is fully
charged, and the AC adaptor is also connected. You can understand the process by
going thru the instructions at the Sony site.

   Cheers
   Aditya

I retired my 505G in 2004 because it was just so slow. I then gave it
to a close family member but it was just returned to me. Thinking it
might be the perfect machine for traveling (email, downloading pics
from camera, internet, etc.) I tried to start it and found it DOA.
None of the lights would even flicker. I followed the procedure below
and it did indeed come back to life.

It runs W98SE, has a black spot on the screen about the size of a dime
, and it only has a pathetic 64MB of memory. Nevertheless, I am now
going to see if it will connect to a LAN with an ethernet pcmcia card,
run Firefox, and run MS Streets and Trips with my USB GPS. If it does
all this I am going to try and upgrade the memory and replace the HD
with a spare 20 Gig drive I have. This old 505G may just have a new
lease on life because its small size makes it so overwhelmingly
convenient.

I have an R505 and it has 128mb fixed (soldered to the motherboard?) +
128mb replaceable. The specs and manual all say upgradeable to 384
(max 256mb in the slot) but I put in a 512mb and it runs very well.
It shows up in the device manager. I haven't done any other testing,
but feels like a major improvement - not incremental. I got the
machine 5-1/2 years ago and I'm dreading the day I have to replace it.

I have a Z505HS and noticed that several owners in this group have
upgraded their machines to 512M RAM. I read several years ago in some
tech groups that even though the machine may register this much RAM,
even the latest bios for these models from Sony (even the Japanese
release) will not use anything above 256 megs. Has anyone used Memtest
or a debug editor to see if their upgraded laptops are using the memory
above the supposed 256 meg limit listed in the specs? There are a few
minor memory resellers that list a max memory for this unit above Sony
spec but this does not mean it is going to get used. And I understand
that Device Manager may display 512 megs installed or your computer may
subjectively appear faster but actually using the extra RAM is a
different matter.

Always interested in squeezing a little extra performance out of a
legendary machine.

update:

It also plays DivX-Videos in a very good and smooth quality.
I read it in some forum on the Internet.

Just use the VideoLanPlayer. This one does the job.

btw: did anyone run a 100 GB harddisk in a Vaio N505x?

Christoph
