Thanks Charlie & Malte for answering my question. You both confirmed what I'd
suspected all along.
Long ago I used to just boot the SD program, but then as Malte said a few times
the program wouldn't find my
whole rig, as if the prefs had been cut in half or corrupted. Then I noticed
that
I could save the prefs in my SD folder & boot
right from that file. This always seems to work properly & this is the way I
boot
SD now. This seems to be the
only program I have that can boot from a prefs file outside the system, that's
why
I was suspicious in the first place &
asked the question.

* anyone have QS8, D4, K5m, U220, Proteus FX, TX81Z (WX7 wind controller) or
Quadraverb Plus patches to trade in SD format..I do!

I have discovered download problems with Netscape Communicator 4.5 under
Windows 98. After downloading for the first time, the file size was
bigger than expected and did not work (got error messages when trying
to setup). Download with Microsoft Explorer or via FTP has worked fine.
Guess it was due to a bug in Netscape when downloading EXE files.

I am a new user of SD, having recently installed 2.08 on my Mac 9500/G3.
I have a Studio 4 on the modem port and a Studio 5 on the printer port.
When I initiate a scan, SD faithfully scans the Studio 4 but does not seem
to get to the Studio 5.
I know SD is talking to the Studio 5 because I can manually install devices
and they communicate both ways.
Any suggestions?

The thing is, SD preferences are saved in any case (except you explicitely
quit SD without saving them). If you start SD for the first time without
preferences a preference file is automatically created in the Preferences
folder in the System folder. If you start SD subsequently SD is loooking
first for Preferences in this folder; if it find them it uses them.
However, you *can* explicitely store Preferences somewhere else *and* use
them, too. This is important if you for example use two different setups.
Simply doubleclick the desired Preferences and you're done. If you start SD
on its own it uses the file from the System folder.
You need to keep in mind that SD stores all the entries from memory
managers in the Preferences.

The bottom line is that you don't actually have to save the Preferences
unless you want them to store somewhere else.

I believe, in my limited experience, that this function is for the purposes
of backing up your preferences. I haven't worked with 2.0.8r1 yet, but this
has been the case for me in 2.0.6 and before. SD automatically loads and
saves the SD preferences in the System Folder when you boot up and close,
respectively. You don't have to do this manually. Occasionally, I've run
into difficulty when things (i.e., SD or the Mac OS) have acted screwy and
my SD preferences file became all distorted and lost some of the data (and
parts of my set up). By backing up the preferences file, now all I have to
do when this happens is replace the the preferences file in the system
folder with the backup file, and I'm back to where I was before the problem
occured. Hope this helps.

Asked this question a few days ago & got no reply, so here goes again!

In order for SD to remember my set-up I presume like every other program that
the
"Sounddiver Preferences" is the element that
has to be seen each time. The quirk in SD (that I find odd) is that when I "save
prefs as default" the finder doesn't automatically put
this "prefs" file in my system folder / preferences! Instead the finder leads me
into a folder within my master SD folder (wherever I last was)
& asks me if I want to save it there. Why would I do that, at that location?

1) on Mac, where does everyone on this list put their latest "sounddiver
preferences" so that when you click on SD program next time you boot up, it sees
your rig & loads it all automatically?

Please do not reply by telling me where to find the "save prefs as default",
I've
known that forever.

Here is the chart listing the RM50 banks and the bank select numbers:

ÒControl change numbers 0 and 32 are used by the bank select message.
The following bank select data values can be used to select RM50 banks:

Bank Select RM50 Bank
MSB LSB Channel Mode Bank Type Category

00 81 Rhythm Kit (RK) Internal (I)
00 82 RK Card (C)
00 83 RK Preset (P)
00 84 Pitched Voice (PV) I MX (Mix) <----
00 85 PV C MX
00 86 PV -- --
00 87 PV I BD (Kick)
00 88 PV C BD
00 89 PV P BD
00 90 PV I SD (Snare)
00 91 PV C SD
00 92 PV P SD
00 93 PV I TM (Tom)
00 94 PV C TM
00 95 PV P TM
00 96 PV I CY (Cymbal)
00 97 PV C CY
00 98 PV P CY
00 99 PV I PC (Perc)
00 100 PV C PC

00 102 PV I SE (Effect)
00 103 PV C SE
00 104 PV P SE
00 105 PV I Slot 1
00 106 PV C Slot 2
00 107 PV P Slot 3Ó

About these banks: the "Preset" Banks are ROM banks and are not
editable. The fully-editable internal user banks are the ones marked 81
and 84 above. The other banks marked "internal" are "voice variations"
banks -- these are copies of the ROM voices which allow editing of 5 or 6
Easy Page parameters, but not the sort of detailed editing possible with
the User voices in the I-MX and C-MX banks.
ÒCardÓ refers to banks stored in the optional front panel RAM
card. I believe that ÒSlot 1... 3Ó in banks 105-07 refer to the three ROM
voice card slots on the front panel (making the I, C, P designations for
entries 105-107 meaningless, but that is what is printed in the manual, so
I include them here).
Thanks for the pointers on how the MIDI messages work -- I will
have to get a book on the subject. The progression of numbers in this
chart should have indicated to me that the number 84 for the
Internal/User/Pitched Voice bank was a decimal number.

It seems that either of two Internal/User banks in this chart
could be used for the control change message we discussed in SoundDiver.
I suggested number 84 (Pitched Voice mode) rather than 81 (Rhythm Kit
mode) because I do not use my drum machines with a MIDI keyboard. I want
to click on an entry in SoundDiver and have the mini-sequencer play that
sound. If the control change specified bank 81, putting the device in
Rhythm Kit mode, then a note number sent by the mini-sequencer would sound
the voice mapped to that note number, not the voice I had clicked in the
Memory Manager. Right?

	 Thanks as always -- Eric.

The ONElist service seems fine (the adverts are not a problem), but I'm
wondering if it's possible to have the digests sent in the same format as the
old list.

Having email addresses listed in the contents section of the digests makes it
more difficult to scan the subject lines to see what might be interesting
(and therefore keep up with the list). Also, because of these extra text
lines, the complete table of contents won't fit in an AOL email (the rest is
sent as an attachment).

Does anyone else have the same problem? Do people prefer to have the email
addresses in the contents section, or are they just clutter? Fokke?

In my wildest fantasies I imagine a threaded digest sent to me with active
hyper links to each of the threads - one line/link per thread...just call me
a dreamer.

Thanks,

Stephen

SD 2.08r1 crashes when I receive larger blocks of SysEx (via MOTU MidiExpress

Now LAMP 4.02 also is frozen and the finder shows error 11 - restart!
I tried all my system-extension but didn't find the guilty one.

I use SD 2.0.8r1 with Logic 4.0.2 on a B&W G3 400 and Mac OS 8.6. It
works for me, so your problem must be something else. I've given Logic,
DAE and SoundDiver large Ram allocations (I have 384 megs to play with).
You may try larger SD Ram values. Exactly how does SD crash?

No, I'm running SD 2.08 on the same machine with OS 8.6. Took me a while to

Date: Fri Sep 3, 1999 6:11 pm
Subject: Need advice: using SD/LAWP4 - what is best way to recall a patch in Logic?
mfischer@xxx.xxx
Send Email Send Email

Hello,

Given that I use SoundDiver's librarian feature for all my synth patches
(since I've got tons), and
since Logic is very limited in terms of patch mgmt - I've boiled down the
best two ways to have
Logic recall "the right patches" for songs to the following, and the point
of this post was to see
if anyone knows of an even better/easier way ...

1) Press record in Logic, then go to SD and send the patch to the synth (and
in effect Logic records
the sysex for the patch). I then place this sysex data before the actual
song data for each track
(i.e. in the region before 1:1:1:1) so that before a song starts, the synth
gets the right patch from
Logic via sysex and no one gets a heart attack when a very loud "brass"
patch starts playing my
bassline due to the incorrect patch. Prg chg. also must be DISABLED in Logic
since it isn't
managing my patch changes.

Another way:

2) I <enable> patch changes in Logic by ticking the box next to Prg, set all
the instruments to patch
ZERO, then in SoundDiver I copy whatever patches I want to use for each
instrument from its library
to memory location that corresponds to zero in the synth (i.e. program
location #1). The next song
I work on would have all instruments set to "Prg 1" in Logic, and so on..
Unfortunately this means
having all my synths have their internal memories' patches correspond to
whatever "Song" I'm working
on - so for example "patch location 3" in every synth would correspond to
the patch used in Logic's
song #3.. This is cumbersome, but I don't have to save/send the Sysex data
from Logic to the synth
every time I load the song. I can have as many Logic song "works in
progress" as I have internal
memories in the synth with the LEAST amount of internal memories.. I.e. if
all my synths have at
least 32 internal patch memories, I can have 32 "works in progress" with
each location corresponding
to a particular Logic song..

Both of these are a real pain in the arse - so I wondered if anyone has a
better way? I was thinking
it'd be nice if one day SoundDiver and Logic are integrated one step further
so that SoundDiver's device
management replaces Logic's very thin one and the need for autolinking goes
away by having SD be
native in Logic.. (just another "window" in Logic)... <one can always
hope!>

Thanks,

Mark Fischer

You don't have version 2.0.8 of SoundDiver... Its on our website and its a
free update! If you have 2.0.7 or older, you need the "USB Floppy Enabler"

True, there should be separate pathes in the file select box.
N.B. there is an undocumented feature for saving the prefs to the
current file: choose "Preferences..." while holding Option (Windows:
Shift). I will change it to a separate menu item some day.

Last I read a long while ago, older PC1600s can be upgraded with new ROMs to
the PC1600x OS. I own three and I sure would LOVE to have an adaptation
WITH an editor. Even with the new sysex, I suspect a Module would be
required. The programming of a PC1600 is fairly complex - so I suspect the
chances of getting even an update are pretty slim.

How about the newer PC1600x ?

Just subscribed to list, have been on LUG for a long time! Just got back to
installing latest SD 2.08, haven't configured it for a while. A few of
questions:

1) When I "save prefs" in SD, it doesn't end up in "system / preferences"
folder as every other Mac program does (by default)! Instead the finder
leads me into whatever my last folder was in SD. Most odd! Am I supposed to
manually copy it to system, or is it supposed to reside in some level of SD
master folder? If so, exactly where?

2) I noticed that several of my synth & drum units now have adaptions
(.ADA) extensions on names. I presume that for example "D4.ADA" should be
in "Diver" folder & the old D4 (without the ADA) should be removed. Is that
the case in general?

3) Has anyone done an adaptions for: Lexicon MPX-1 or MPX-100, Kawai K5m,
Proteus FX, Digitech IPS33 (not 33B)......I didn't think so! If you
have....HELP me..by sending them.

4) Is anyone a master at editing DM5 drums in QS8 or QSR (I have 1 of
each). Any great kits out there to be traded.

5) When I mix tunes, my drums are panning as if I'm looking at drummer
onstage. For example: lowest tom is panned furthest left, hi hat is panned
+1 rt.
All GM, and stock drum patches (including in Band in a Box, QSR + 8, D4
etc.....) are panned as if I am the drummer sitting on my throne looking
out to the audience. For example: lowest tome is now on my far rt, hi hat
is -1 left. Even Peter Erskine's sample CD is done this way.
To do a mix I have to re-pan everything in reverse.....am I the only person
that finds this odd! Do other people mix as if they are onstage looking
out, I don't......am I nuts........hey not so fast with that response!

It means in order to use QSR or QS8 drums in a mix, I have to learn how to
re-pan all drums in SD 2.08....yikes, QS editor is quite complex! D4 is a
snap to do manually or via SD!

Correct.

What other banks are available?

No, it must be a decimal value, as data bytes must have bit 7 cleared
(i.e. the first digit of a hex number must be lower than 8).

The correct message would be
$Bn $00 $00 $Bn $20 $54

A Bank Select MSB and LSB message consists of each 3 bytes. The first
byte is $Bn, the second $00 (MSB) or $20 (LSB), and the third is the
bank number.

We are currently developing an XG Module. However the QY70 is not yet
included in the list of supported devices.

The currentl XG Adaptation is not really good, and it does not
support AutoLink name providing.

No, you will have to enter the names manually.

>True, both Adaptations are missing a Program Change message in the "After
Dump" MIDI >String. Can you tell me which bank select message and MIDI channel
are required?

IÕm a novice, but if I understand correctly, the MIDI Data Format
pages from the RM50 manual seem to indicate that $Bn, $00 initiates the
bank select message. The RM50 can send/receive on any of the 16 channels,
so n should be the same value that has been set in the Device Number
(and/or MIDI Thru) in the SoundDiver parameter box -- this should be the
same as the Device Number set in the front panel of the device.
Next, on selecting the Internal User bank, (referred to as I-MX in
the manual and on the front panel) and putting this bank into Pitched
Voice mode, the table from the manual gives this info:

Bank Select RM50 Bank
MSB LSB Channel Mode Bank Type Category
.. .. ... ... ...
00 84 Pitched Voice Internal MX (Mix)
.. .. ... ... ...

I assume that this 84 is a hexadecimal number, so I think the bank
select message you need would be: $Bn, $00, $84.
Once the bank is set properly, the program change message ($Cn)
can be used to assign one of the 128 sounds in the I-MX bank to that
channel.
A word of explanation about the ÒPitched VoiceÓ mode: each channel
on the RM50 can be set to one of three modes:
	 1. ÒOff,Ó which ignores MIDI note info, program changes, etc.
	 2. ÒRhythm KitÓ, in which each note number activates a different
rhythm voice; and
	 3. ÒPitched voice,Ó in which different note numbers play one voice
at different pitches, like a standard synth patch. This mode seems to be
the most suitable for use with AutoPlay, the mini-sequencer, u.s.w.
IÕll be happy to fax or mail photocopies of the relevant pages of
the manual if it will help.

I havenÕt yet figured out the equivalent commands for the R-8 MkII
, but IÕll drop a note when I do.

>I could not reproduce these problems.

Here are some more details on the problems I had with 2.0.8 --
this is what I told tech support earlier. The difficulties were with the
adaptation files (RM50.ADA, R8.ADA, R8 MkII.ADA) that are supplied with
the Mac version of 2.0.8 that I downloaded from the web, not with the
application itself. IÕm currently playing with 2.0.8 but using the
adaptation files that shipped with version 2.0.5, which load properly and
which do not exhibit the problems described below.

In SoundDiver 2.0.8:

1. Running SoundDiver 2.0.8, I could not load the RM50 or R-8 adaptations
at all. When I tried to scan the RM50, two error dialog boxes resulted:

	 Adaptation "RM50",
	 Data type "Kit":
	 Inconsistent object list structure.
At least one object has been deleted
	 to keep structure intact.
		 [CANCEL button]

Then:

	 Error reading file "RM50.ADA"
		 [CANCEL button]

I also tried to manually "ADD" the Roland R-8 (as distinct from the R-8 Mk
II) adaptation in order to experiment with it. But the R-8 adaptation
could not be added:

	 Error reading file "R8.ADA"
		 [CANCEL button]

2. I could not successfully scan the Roland R-8 MKII until I opened the
MIDI Monitor window; only then did it scan successfully. Before the MIDI
Monitor is opened, and attempt to scan gives the error dialog:

	 No new Device found!
Please check MIDI cables and Devices.
If you add the Devices with "Manually", you
have to adjust all the settings
	 yourself
			 [Cancel] [Manually] [[Retry]]

3. Once I had the Memory Manager window for the R-8 Mk II open, with the
Device and MIDI Thru numbers specified in the parameter box, REQUESTs of
the memory contents of the device produced repeated checksum errors.
Nothing like this happened when I was playing with version 2.0.5. The
following dialogs came up in response to REQUEST commands. The first one
would come up one or more times, I believe in response to my hitting the
RETRY button in the dialog box; when I finally hit ABORT instead, the
first dialog would be replaced by the second one, which would often appear
many times in a row:

	 SysEx Communication Error
	 Checksum Error for
	 R-8 Mk II
		 [Help] [Abort] [[Retry]]

then:

	 SysEx Communication Error
	 Checksum Error for
	 R-8 Mk II
				 [Help] [Abort]

In various attempts, one or both of these dialogs appear, often many times
in rapid succession -- another one appears as soon as you click "HELP" or
"ABORT." But the system did not crash and in at least one case I
patiently kept hitting RETURN to send the ABORT command and eventually the
dialogs stopped and went away (after perhaps 20 or 25 alerts in a row).
After that, a few scattered entries would be loaded into the banks of the
Memory Manager window, leaving most of the spaces unloaded -- either blank
or their default titles displayed in light grey. Repeated attempts to
REQUEST caused more and more of the entries to be successfully loaded, but
even after 10 tries or so not all of them had been successfully read;
there remained scattered entries which were either blank or displayed in
the light grey text.
An active dump (initiated from the device panel) produced similar
results -- a long string of error dialogues, with some, but not all,
entries loaded at the end of the dump. The tip in the Roland R-8 help
file about hitting the exit key on the device had no effect.

Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks and cheers -- Eric Marler.
