Questions from another "Spicateer"
PART ONE
But it has stirred up another question: How does one date the
manufacturing of their TC-50?
No known way. We didn't put date codes on them.
Does anyone know what serial numbers denote the age of the
speakers, as in being made pre or post-1988?
Serial number 7500 was the break point between the old- and new-
style TC-50s. (They were serialized in pairs.) The change was
brought on when the supplier for the surround of the woofer went out
of business, and Audax had to find a replacement. It was completely
unannounced. In order to match the efficiency gain of the woofer
with the new surround, we had to go to a different winding on
the tweeter voice coil, change the crossover, felt padding geometry,
and double-coat the woofers.
The new version was a bit brighter (more 'detailed' to some...) but
did play a bit louder. The original one is the more accurate and
musical of the two.
Allow me to correct a couple misunderstandings:
: From the TC-50 onward, there is NO iron in any of the inductors,
nor any of the other parts in the crossover...
: I did EXTENSIVE measurement and listening tests to components. But
it was correctly done separate from the design process.
Hope that helps.

Part 2
I don't mind the questions - I just don't want pressure to
provide a service that is impossible. That is all. I have looked at
this many times and from many angles, and I just do not see a way to
make a reasonable living providing support and updates for Spica
products. (You can quote me on that.)
I'll be happy to continue to answer questions as I'm able to, as
long as that is the case.
Bests,
John
