1.  What are FAQs?

FAQs = Frequently Asked Questions. In other words, questions asked of

Yes. Apart from that, in-house translators and freelancers working with
any and all clients, genres, and terminologies are welcome. That
includes literary translators, technical translators, medical

profession are welcome to post questions to the group after clearing
their post(s) with the moderator.


3.  Who is the group moderator?

The moderator is Mary C. Maloof, a university-certified and locally
accredited translator of Spanish into English. She is also the owner of
Maloof Language Services, Inc., which provides Spanish/French/Portuguese
into English translations, referrals in many other languages, and a wide
variety of other language-related services.


4. Why does this discussion group need a moderator?

The moderator is needed to delete inappropriate messages or messages
that were sent in error, change settings for posters if they have
trouble, answer any questions that may be floating around re: the group,
and spark discussion by way of introducing a posting on a specific
topic.

5.  Is the moderator guided by what the members want?

Absolutely!!


6.  Does the moderator censor or filter messages?

Among members, no. All messages that are posted to the group by members
go directly to the group a few seconds later. All messages that are
posted by non-members must be approved by the moderator before they go
to the group.

The only time the moderator will withhold approval of a nonmember's
message or delete a posted message is when one of the members asks her
to do so, or she discovers that a message's content is truly
inappropriate to the group. This will happen only VERY rarely.

¡Por supuesto! Of course! If the moderator responds in Spanish to your
Spanish posting, apologies in advance for any errors her reply contains.
(Although she has studied the Spanish language for over a dozen years,

8. How do I know I am subscribed to sptranslators@egroups.com ?

When you go to http://www.eGroups.com, you will see a list of the groups
to which you subscribe. A more simple way of finding out is that if you
receive e-mails from the group, then you are a member! :0)

9. Can anyone post an e-mail to this group?

No. Only members can post an e-mail to this group, and all non-members
who wish to post something to the group must first clear it with the
moderator. This is to prevent our group from being "spammed" with
inappropriate messages. However, all messages which have already been
posted can be viewed by the general public.


10. If I don't like the group, how can I unsubscribe from it?

Click on the "unsubscribe" button. If you have trouble, contact the
moderator and she will go into your settings and unsubscribe you.


11. Which topics may I post about?

As long as it has to do with an issue that is relevant to
Spanish>English or English>Spanish translators, then anything goes. You
are free to discuss how to handle a client problem, ask a question about
terminology, trade leads on useful dictionaries, talk about operating
systems and software, home office layout, taxes, etc.

The only thing that you are asked NOT to post are job leads and job
solicitations. There are two other discussion groups intended for that
purpose, and you should go to those if you wish to post something of
that nature. If you wish to post a résumé DIRECTLY to the moderator, do
so privately at mmaloof@..., but please don't post it to the
group. Such messages will be deleted by the moderator.


12. Is this newsgroup free?

Yes.


13. What do I do if I make a mistake, have sent an e-mail to the
newsgroup and want to change or remove my e-mail from the system?

Send in your corrected e-mail, and ask the moderator privately at
mmaloof@... to delete the offending e-mail.


14.  Some characters appear in my subject line (such as
*&#$'?-345768-?-) which I did not put there. What happened?

If you have written a word with a diacritical mark or accent in the
subject line, e.g. á, é, í, ó, ñ, ü, etc., some servers pick up the MIME
coding. To prevent this from happening, simply type your subject in the
subject line with NO accents, e.g. traduccion, espanol, etc. For the
rest of your e-mail, you should be able to type as usual, with accents
and diacritics.

Hi everyone,

Did you know that you can receive the messages from this discussion group in a
"digest" format? That is, instead of getting individual little messages each
time someone posts to the group, you get them all condensed in one daily digest.
The only catch is that you don't get the complete messages, just the headers,
and you have to click on the link to see them, but for people who get lots of
emails anyway, the digest format may be a more convenient option.

Go to your www.eGroups.com home page and scroll to the bottom of the page. Right
under the button that says "Mark as read," you will see a button that says "Set
read mode to," and there you can change your read mode option from e-mail to
digest format. If you have any problems, I can go into your settings and change
them for you.

En lo que respecta a 'hedge funds', como sabes, es un termino coloquial en
Ingles 'inventado' por los corredores de bolsa del Chicago Futures Exchange.
Como tal es parte de la idiomatica de dichos profesionales que se ha
convertido en parte del idioma cotidiano de todos aquellos que trabajan con
los mercados de Futuros.

La realidad es que el Ingles es el idioma de los mercados de bolsa en todo
el mundo y, estrictamente, el termino no tiene traduccion al castellano.
Los que trabajan en la industriaa suelen referirse en la terminologia
inglesa - al menos eso pasa en España.

Los contratos de futuras, como en su mayoria son contratos del Chicago
Futures Exchange ó del London Futures Exchange suelen ser escritos y
ejecutados en Ingles.

'Hedge funds' pueden ser traducidos como 'Fondos de cobertura'.  La palabra
'hedge'  significa 'seto' ó 'cerco' ó 'borde', y en este sentido indica un
sistema de proteccion de inversiones contra possibles variaciones en las
cotizaciones.

Sorry, I'll will you a better one [you'll think I have an inferiority
complex].  Can not go past the 'Diccionario de la Lengua Española' by the
'Real Academia Española', 21st edition, includes all Peninsular, South
American and even Spanish-Philipino words (not that I have ever used the
latter).   Published by the REAL ACADEMIA  and printed by Espasa Calpe SA,
Carretera de Irun  km 12,200. 28049 Madrid, Spain.   This one cost me 'un
riñon' [it is the hard cover, fancy etc etc] but they have affordable
versions.  By the way, nothing worng with Espasa Calpe's very own !!!!

With regard to dictionaries in the Spanish language only (are these correctly
termed *monolingual* as opposed to *bilingual*?), I HIGHLY recommend the *Gran

Me da la oportunidad de pensar, situacion que falta mucho en las versiones
online.  Sobretodo, ofrecen tantos ejemplos sintacticos, y no conozco
ninguno electronico que ofrezca tantas entradas como el HarperCollins que
tengo aqui en mi escritorio.

HarperCollins es extremadamente moderno, ofrece vocabulario de informatica,
de comercio internacional, maritimo, juridico, tanto como modismos y todo
tipo de palabras verdes (para mi diversion, que no he tenido mucha
oportunidad para traducirlas!)

Tambien compre en Madrid (en el sotano de Espasa Calpe en Gran Via) el
Diccionario maritimo de M. Rodriguez Barrientos (Paraninfo) y Diccionario de
terminos legales por Louis A. Robb (Noriega Limusa).  Los dos me han servido
muy bien.  Hago muchas traducciones por companias maritimas y de estiba, y
nunca me han corregido nada en cuanto a vocabulario maritimo.

OK, I'm gonna get this going... So what are your
favorite dictionaries and why? Which ones do you
go back to again and again?

My favorite all-purpose S<>E dictionary is
the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. The main reason I
want to sing this dictionary's praises is
that there have been VERY few occasions where
I've searched for an unfamiliar word or phrase
and HAVEN'T found it in this dictionary! It's
got TONS of regional and local words and phrases
(every Spanish-speaking country is represented
pretty thoroughly), it's very up-to-date with
regard to contemporary written and spoken Spanish
and English (examples: "glass ceiling,"
"ciberespacio"), has a pretty extensive
coverage of legal and technical vocabulary, and
it even has a pretty lengthy appendix that
contains various samples of business and
personal correspondence in Spanish and English
for all kinds of different situations.

I also love the *BBI Dictionary of English Word
Combinations* (Morton Benson, Evelyn Benson, and
Robert Ilson, John Benjamins Publishing
Company)... if you haven't heard of this one,
it's great and NO S>E translator should be
without a copy. Marina Orellana's *Glosario
Internacional Para el Traductor* (S<>E) is also
fantastic. This one focuses on medicine because
Orellana used to work for PAHO, but it has terms
in many other fields as well.  I have the
purchasing info for both these books if you need
to find out where to get them.

For commercial, I have something that isn't
a dictionary per se -- it's more like a
guidebook. But it has tons of useful
info like acronyms, sample letters, facts and
stats, and a glossary if you do a lot of
commercial translations for companies in Spain.
*Cassell's Business Companions: Spain,* by Karsta
Neuhaus and Margret Haltern. (The Business
Companions series has a book for every country
in the European Union.)

For legal, I have both Butterworth's and Robb's,
but I've found neither of them to be particularly
helpful. Do you happen to have any legal
dictionaries that you like better?

Hi Lorraine, Neysa, and all new subscribers to come! Thanks so much for
subscribing to the group.

The only group that's similar to this one is the one for Spanish/Portuguese
translators and interpreters on CompuServe's Foreign Languages Forum, but of
course, it's available to CompuServe members only. Translators who aren't
CompuServe members have been in need of a similar forum, but nothing like that
has existed on the Internet until now, at least to my knowledge.

On the CompuServe forum, translators discuss myriad issues and problems, ask one
another about obscure and archaic words, trade all sorts of tips, and even
upload personal glossaries, articles, and reference materials for the benefit of
the other members. This group has the potential to evolve into the same sort of
thing.

With your help, we'll make this group as good as the CompuServe one, and it will
be an immensely useful and informative resource. We translators can't work in a
vacuum -- we need all the help and mutual support we can get!!!

I'm REALLY excited about this!
