On Sunday April 15 from 2-4 pm, James Martin and Brian Emerson of the
WATERSHEDS UNITE project will conduct a multimedia presentation
detailing their recent navigation and documentation of the entire Cedar
River from Austin, MN, to Columbus Junction, IA. They will also discuss
their innovative approach to watershed analysis which seeks to collect
credible cultural data through storytelling, poetry, art, and music. The
presentation will feature on the water video collected during the
September 2006 trip.
The WATERSHEDS UNITE project was created in 2000 by Cedar Rapids, Iowa
natives James Martin and Brian Emerson: > The project seeks to
accurately address water quality issues through
> creative means. Specifically we utilize a multi disciplinary approach
> to research, that explores diverse aspects of a watershed. We believe
> that a song writer, artist, poet, or storyteller can provide a water
> quality assessment that can complement that of the scientist. It is
> our goal to illuminate the 'character' of our local waters to
> reaffirm its vital importance to our personal and collective
> livelihood.
The Watersheds Unite presentation is the last of the 2007 Central Iowa
Paddler's Armchair Paddling Series. This presentation will be held at
the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Avenue in Des Moines.
