Ames High Volunteers:
If you have not committed to an Earth Day event already or if you will
have any energy left after VEISHEA - Come to Ames High Prairie and
participate in the Statewide 8th Annual Prairie Rescue being held in
conjunction with Earth Day.
Date/Time: Sunday, April 22nd. 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m - Meet by the
Preserve Sign
The main activity for the day will involve spreading prairie seed on a
restoration area where volunteers have been working to remove trees and
reconnect previously isolated areas of prairie. Last fall volunteers
collected many pounds of prairie seed from the remnant on the east side
of the preserve. The seed was cold-treated or vernalized over the
winter and will be spread on Sunday. Other tasks for the day will
include, sawing or lopping invasive honeysuckle and treating stumps with
a non restricted use herbicide. As always, the wind and flooding creek
have deposited garbage in the floodplain and preserve perimeter,
volunteers are needed to help tidy up the preserve. Volunteers should
bring water, gloves, dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy
footwear. Tools will be provided, if volunteers have loppers or bowsaws
they are encouraged to bring them along, please put your name on your tools.
Registration is not required, but if you are planning to come please
give me a call or email - so I can plan accordingly. If you need to
reach me on Sunday, you call the TNC crew cell phone 515-371-8544.
Drinks and snacks will be provided throughout the day. Info is also
posted on our website nature.org/iowa
Thank you for all of your previous help.
