River Congress
Join Iowa Rivers Revival on Saturday, November 22, 2008 for the first
River Congress at the Des Moines Botanical Center (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.).
The Congress is an opportunity to collaborate with individuals and
groups across the state to organize an advocacy agenda for the 2009
legislative session working towards preserving and enhancing Iowa’s
rivers and streams. Participants will help to develop a River Bill
Rights that will set the standard for river quality expectations and
practices statewide. Together, we can work to ensure the safety and
quality of Iowa’s rivers and streams.
Registration is open to individuals and organizations interested in
improving the quality of Iowa’s rivers and streams. Registration cost
is $10 for meals and beverages. Please register by Friday, November 8.
Iowa Rivers Revival is working with the Iowa Food Cooperative, Practical
Farmer’s of Iowa and Great Midwestern Catering to provide Congress
participants a meal created with ingredients from local food producers
who incorporate sustainable farming practices in harmony with their
surrounding environment. There are many benefits of buying local and
sustainably raised foods – access to healthy and nutritious products,
direct financial support to local farmers, preserving Iowa’s
environmental health and natural resources and reducing the distance and
energy used for food transportation. Produce purchased at the average
grocery store travels 1,500 miles before it reaches your dinner table.
Buying food from local farms means getting food when it’s at its best.

FLOW– Award-winning documentary comes to Des Moines
Can anyone really own water? Join Iowa Rivers Revival on Saturday,
November 22, 2008 (7PM) at the Iowa Historical Building for an exclusive
Iowa screening of Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary FLOW – an
investigation into what experts label the most important political and
environmental issue of the 21st Century - The World Water Crisis.
FLOW will be shown as a fundraising effort in support of Iowa Rivers
Revival’s education and program initiatives that have been developed to
raise awareness about river quality and conservation and the many
opportunities and benefits provided to us by rivers. IRR is a
non-profit organization that relies primarily on private contributions.
Tickets will be sold for $20 in advance or $25 at the door. A student
rate is available for $10 a ticket. There are limited showings
throughout the United States. Don’t miss your chance to see this
powerful documentary! Reserve your seat today at www.iowarivers.org.
FLOW shares how water is fast becoming an unregulated, monopolized and
commodified resource world-wide. Water has become a $400 billion dollar
global industry; the third largest behind electricity and oil. It was
hard to imagine a day when American’s would pay $5 for a gallon of gas –
imagine paying $9 for a gallon of water. We can find alternatives for
oil dependence – we simply cannot survive without safe, clean water.
