-------- Original Message --------
Ames is considering improving the 13th Street dam, on the South Skunk in
North River Valley Park, by the addition of a rock arch rapids on the
downstream side of the dam. This would allow continued function as a
water holding structure for the city's aquifer, while changing the
nature of the downstream flow so as to avoid the formation of a uniform
hydraulic (downstream uniform hydraulics are the reason dams are
referred to as drowning machines). An example of such an improvement
exists on the South Skunk in Story City, where three rock weirs were
recently constructed below an existing sheet pile dam.
In order to share information, answer questions, and gather public input
concerning such improvements, a public open house is being held in the
Farwell T. Brown Auditorium of the Ames Public Library on Monday,
January 26, 2009, from 6-8pm. Anyone interested is invited to attend.
Please feel free to contact Piper Wall at piperwall@crosspaths with
questions or comments, if you are unable to attend. Piper will either
answer your questions directly or relay them to the appropriate person.
