*Summary of Lawn Renovation Creek Chat - February, 12th 2009:
*Pat Sauer discussed a variety of alternative lawn care practices aimed
at minimizing or even eliminating traditional fertilizer and pesticide
applications. College Creek monitoring identified high phosphorus and
nitrogen levels in the creek and in shallow groundwater flowing into the
creek. Recommendations included using P (phosphorus) free fertilizers,
never applying more than the label recommends, and reducing fertilizer
applications to fall and/or spring only. P-free fertilizers are
available at many local retailers. The importance of topsoil quality
was also discussed; compost can be added to enhance soil quality and
maximize rain absorption. More details on soil quality can be found on
the City of Ames website
