Hello all,

Mark your calendars – the spring snapshot will be held on Saturday, May 16th from 9am -1pm.  Check your IOWATER supplies and expiration data, and e-mail me (zoey@...) or Rick Dietz (rsdietz@...) with a list of what you need.  We usually meet at Brookside, but you can pick up your collection bottles and data sheets earlier if that is inconvenient – let us know.

Due to the costs of monitoring water after last spring’s floods, the DNR/IIOWATER budget for lab testing of bacteria and nutrients has run out, but the congregation of the Unitarian Fellowship has jumped up to help us.  The congregation raised over $300 in donations over the last month, which we will use to pay for some of the tests.

If you are on the listserv, but haven’t participated in a snapshot lately, or at all, please consider coming to help out.  The data from these snapshots, over time, will help us to get a better picture of water quality in the watershed, and establish benchmarks that can help us distinguish between non-point and point-source pollution, and possibly to target areas where runoff should be addressed.

The JAX film festival was a great success due mainly to the efforts of Stacy Brothers at JAX, with a little help from the coalition members.  Thanks Stacy!

Thanks,

Mike Lazere

Chuck, The birds I followed all year finally took up residency a week ago
at the Kelly Farm on a Muscrat Hut. I believe their Collar numbers are 8K4
& 7K4. I followed these swans all over by my house this spring. Before
they took up residency at the Kelly farm I thought they were going to nest
in the middle of a Bean Field. She sat in that field for 3 days straight
in early April. They also used the wetlands west of the Kelly farm at V
ave. and the Railroad tracks just south of 210 ave. They also used the
wetland just off hwy 30 and V avennue west of ames and east of United
Community school.

The other pair I have noticed have a nest on the west pit of Mabaska. She
is right off Hiway 30 sitting on a muscrat hut as well. I don't want to
disturb her beings she is so close to the road but I have not noticed if
she has a collar or not.

I thought I would report back on the swans at the re-established wetland at
the ISU Kelley farm northwest of Ames.  There was a time in the summer of
2008 that I didn't see them, but then in early fall, I began seeing the two
swans again.  This spring I started seeing them, and recently I have noticed
that one appears to be nesting on a muskrat house.  I tried using binoculars
today to read the numbers on the neck collar of the one that wasn't sitting
on the nest.  Unfortunately, I still wasn't close enough to read them.  The
nest is even farther away.  You might be able to read their numbers with a
quality spotting scope.  The collars are red or pink in color.  One Swan was
standing in shallow water and I was able to see what looked like a silver
leg band when it raised up its leg.

I have attached an aerial photo of the wetland.  When we established it, we
weren't sure if it would hold water, but every year, it seems to get deeper.
I believe it has held water continuously the last two summers. The water
level has exceeded the 30 foot upland buffer and is creeping into the field.
The area was farmed prior to enrolling it into the farmable wetland program.

The Kelley farm is northwest of Ames in Boone County, Jackson Township,
Section 36.  The wetland is directly west of XL avenue and north of 220th.
It is also north directly north of the railroad tracks.  My work cell phone
is (515)290-5088.

Thanks,

Kent Berns

We're going to attempt to sample all 55 sites again, though we will not
be taking lab samples at every site.

It is very helpful for planning purposes that we know who plans to
participate. And it is critical that everyone check their IOWATER
equipment and expiration dates in advance so that we can have
replacements available on the 16th. I'd like to have that information by
Monday evening so that we'll have time to get those supplies to Ames.

Thanks all!

Rick

Hello again -

Laura Merrick has put together an IOWATER Field Equipment Checklist that
you might find very useful. I've attached a pdf of the form and of her
example. The pdf and an Excel version are also on the website at
www.squawcreekwatershed.org/watershed.html#checklist

You may choose to simply use it as a guide, or you're welcome to fill
out either form and get it back to Mike or I either electronically or in
person.

Thanks again, and thanks Laura!

Rick

Btw, I have an extra bottle of nitrate/nitrite strips if someone needs
them, and a good supply of DO and Phosphate ampules. I'll be needing
Chloride strips.

Thanks for the report.

Amazing story!
Wetland habitat restored,... and voila.  "Build it,... and They Will Come" an
Iowa and a Ron Andrews quote.  Trumpeters often select these restored wetlands,
since they have the best water quality and thus the best plants.

A big thanks to all those involved in restoring wetlands and Trumpeter swans at
the ISU Kelley Farm.  It is rewarding to see the results!
The benefits of improved water quality, flood control, and habitat!

At long last, I've pulled together everything I received from each of
you and have a "pitch" ready to send to reporters at the Des Moines
Register regarding the trumpeter swan nest on the ISU Kelley farm.
Along with the attached summary, I will give them three items Ron
Andrews provided to me - 2008 nest map, DNR summary of the overall
trumpeter swan project, and sightings summary of the two ISU swans
over the past few years.

Please review the attached and let me know ASAP of any changes you'd
suggest. This is MUCH LONGER than a normal pitch, but there are so
many possible angles, I want to give them adequate information
without overwhelming them.

I look forward to your comments.

Please join us next Monday, June 22nd between 6:00 and 8:00 pm for the next creek chat.  We will meet at the Daley Park shelter for pizza and a discussion about the signs posted in the display boards behind Rockwell Circle and Daley Park that illustrate alternative stream restoration practices for College Creek.

There is also a web-based questionnaire for sharing your opinions about possibilities for how to improve the stream and how it will look after the restoration construction.  Participate by following this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GRmOTrpfLa_2bqb6aLbtBbHw_3d_3d

You may also see us near the signboards along the walking trail beginning this Wednesday.  We will also collect input using questionnaires at the signboards in the next two weeks.

This email is to inform you of a public hearing about tentative changes
to the College Creek Drainage District (Boone #93-Story #4). The
meeting will be on *Monday, July 20 at 6:30 pm* at United Community
School, 1284 U Avenue, Boone County.

Meeting discussions will include the tentative annexation of additional
neighborhoods in west Ames as well as whether to repair the existing,
broken tile line or create an open ditch in its place. Attached is a
map of the current Drainage District boundary with the potential changes
indicated. ISU watershed modeling estimates the open ditch would
substantially increase peak flow in College Creek after rain events.

We also want to clarify that this Drainage District tile repair effort
has been ongoing for three to five years. It is a completely separate
project from the College Creek restoration efforts. For more
information about the Boone #93-Story #4 Drainage District and to read
minutes of past meetings, visit < http://www.storycounty.com/> and click
on the link to “Boone - Story #4 Joint Drainage District: Public Hearing
July 20, 2009.” To find the amount you would owe if the annexation
occur, follow this link: http://apps.storycounty.com/drainage/.

Please join us on *Wednesday, August 5th *at 6:30 for the next creek
chat. We will meet at the Daley Park shelter to discuss the results of
the frog and toad inventory on College Creek. We'll share data from an
Iowa Lakeside Lab class as well as the results from the digital
recordings taken during frog and toad breeding season.

In other news, the College Creek Drainage District (Boone #93-Story #4)
met on July 20, 2009. They voted to proceed with preparing construction
bidding documents to replace the damaged drain tile (rather than
constructing an open ditch in lieu of the tile). Also, District
trustees (Board of Supervisors for Story and Boone counties) are
reconsidering limits of the Drainage District as they relate to urban
residents; this includes both homes currently considered inside the
Drainage District as well as those proposed to be annexed. The District
and the City of Ames are exploring a legal arrangement by which the City
of Ames would assume maintenance responsibility for that portion of
College Creek within city jurisdiction. District trustees suggested they
would agree to remove all urban residents from the Drainage District if
this agreement can be reached. We will forward the meeting minutes when
they become available from Story County.

The next Creek Chat will be on Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30. The
topic will be invasive plants of the College Creek area. We will
meet at the Daley Park shelter. As soon as we have gathered, we will
walk to several sites along the College Creek greenway to pull
invasive plants, learning how to identify them as we go. Bring
gloves to help pull and a small bag if you want to take home leaf
samples so you can identify them in your own area.

There are two attachments to this email. The first document is the
compiled list of birds you reported seeing in the neighborhood along
the stream. You have seen a total of 114 species of birds!

The second attachment is the frog and toad handout from our last creek chat.

Hello!

It's almost time for the fall snapshot (and it certainly feels like
fall today!) We will try to monitor 50 sites in the watershed from
9am - 1pm on Saturday, October 10th.

Data sheets and sampling bottles (at least for bacteria) will be
picked up and returned to Brookside Park. I know it's more convenient
for those who live outside of Ames to pick up materials before
Saturday morning, so we will make arrangements for that.

Please reply to me and let me know:

(1) If you plan to participate. If you normally have in the past, but
cannot, please let me know that too.

(2) What chemicals or supplies you will need (Please check your

This is a reminder that we are having a workday for seed collection
Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 AM to noon, at the Ames High Prairie (Pohl
Preserve). We will meet at 9 at the entrance to the prairie behind
the High School.

We are supposed to have rain on Thursday and maybe Friday. If there
is no rain Saturday morning, at least the tall grass seed should be
dry enough to harvest, although we may have to delay the start of
collection for up to an hour. In this case we will spend the first
hour touring the prairie and learning which seed to collect.

If it is raining Saturday morning, the workday will be postponed. In
that case the workdays will be Oct. 10 and 24, and possibly Oct. 31 if
needed.

In any case, there will be another workday on Oct. 10 but none on Oct. 17.

From: Jim Murdock <jmurdock1510@...>

Because of the amount of rain we have had, the seed collection workday
scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3 will be changed to Sunday, Oct. 4 from
2PM to 5PM. Sunday is supposed to be clear, and this should give time
for the seed to dry enough for harvesting.

I know that some of you may be unable to come at that time, but I hope
we will get enough people to get a start on the work that needs to be
done. We will watch the weather for next week and hope that Saturday
morning Oct. 10 will still work.

It would be helpful for me to know which time you prefer in the
future, since it makes no difference to me. If the timing matters to
you, and you want to come, please email me whether your general
preference is for workdays on Saturday morining or on Sunday
afternoon. Thanks.

Just a reminder for those coming this weekend on Sunday: wear long
pants and closed shoes, because the plants can be scratchy and there
is some poison ivy.

Film Festival and South Skunk Water Quality Open House

Water Under Siege: The Politics, Pollution and Commodification of our Water
November 7, at The Central Des Moines Public Library (9:30am-4:30pm) and
The Pappajohn Center (4:45pm - 8:30pm)

The Women's International League for Peace & Freedom has organized a
full day of films and dialogue about water quality, water conservation
and water protection in Iowa. The festival is free, with six films of
different lengths and tones, from POISONED WATERS, a Frontline special
that takes a serious look at pollution around the nation, to a trilogy
of short films from the Iowa Learning Farm at ISU that look specifically
at the impact of agriculture and conservation here in Iowa.

South Skunk Water Quality Open House
November 9, 5-7pm at the Ames Water Pollution Control (WPC) Facility,
56797 280th St.

The public has been invited to attend and learn about disinfection
alternatives for the Ames Facility and to provide input on the project
prior to a final recommendation to the Ames City Council.

The Ames WPC Facility can be reached by taking Hwy 30 east to R70, and
R70 south to 280th.

You may also have seen the article by Perry Beeman in last Sunday's Des
Moines Register, "Sewer plants pollute water"
Great article, I thought, but the South Skunk was unfairly represented
as carrying "almost nothing but sewage" during dry weather.

The Ames discharge to the South Skunk may account for the majority of
flow at times, but it is not sewage. The facility has a remarkable
record of compliance with its NPDES Permit and the proposed improvements
will further protect public health and the environment.

Clean Water Network’s 2009 Reading List

Clean Water Network is happy to announce its recommended reading list for 2009. Most of the entries on this year’s list were authored by Clean Water Network member organizations. The reports and books on the list reveal the cutting edge in thinking about water policy and management in the 21st Century. Topics addressed range from Clean Water Act jurisdiction to the energy–water nexus to green infrastructure. The following books and reports are a must-read for every Clean Water Network member!

·         Legislative and Administrative H20 Priorities to President Obama’s Administration & the 111th Congress, Clean Water Network, January 2009.   This document details federal actions that can be taken by the Obama Administration and the 111th Congress to reduce water pollution and protect water resources across the country. It reflects the collaborative input and expertise of Clean Water Network (CWN) member organizations from across the country. This must have booklet is a comprehensive listing of top clean water legislative and administrative priorities for the Clean Water Network.

·         Courting Disaster: How the Supreme Court Has Broken the Clean Water Act and Why Congress Must Fix It, Earthjustice, Environment America, Clean Water Action, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, and Southern Environmental Law Center, April 2009.  This report details how muddied Supreme Court decisions and misguided policies by federal agencies have threatened water quality in many rivers, lakes, streams and other waters across the country.  It contains more than 30 case studies from across the United States and demonstrates that without immediate passage of the Clean Water Restoration Act, a generation worth of progress toward cleaning up our Nation's waters may be lost.

·         Testing the Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches, Natural Resources Defense Council, July 2009. NRDC's annual survey of water quality and public notification at U.S. beaches finds that pollution caused the number of beach closings and advisories to hit their fourth-highest level in the 19-year history of the report. The number of 2008 closing and advisory days at ocean, bay and Great Lakes beaches topped 20,000 for the fourth consecutive year, confirming that our nation's beaches continue to suffer from serious water pollution that puts swimmers at risk.

·         A Clear Blue Future: How Greening California Cities Can Address Water Resources & Climate Challenges in the 21st Century, Natural Resources Defense Council, August 2009.  New NRDC and University of California, Santa Barbara analysis shows that implementing Low Impact Development (LID) practices at new and redeveloped residential and commercial properties in parts of California can increase water supplies by billions of gallons each year, providing an effective and much-needed way to mitigate global warming’s impact on California.

·         Clean Up Your Act! Gulf States Report Card:  A Review of How the Clean Water Act is Incorporated into Gulf State Water Regulations, Gulf Restoration Network, September 2009.  This report grades each of the five Gulf States on how different important sections of the Clean Water Act are incorporated into state rules.  Regretfully each state scored poorly, averaging a D+.  The scores ranged from a C- to an F, which shows that all of the Gulf States have not lived up to their obligations under the Clean Water Act.

·         Natural Security: How Sustainable Water Strategies are Preparing Communities for a Changing Climate, American Rivers, September 2009.  This report highlights eight forward-looking communities that have become more resilient to the impacts of climate change by embracing green infrastructure. They have taken steps to prepare themselves in four areas where the effects of rising temperatures will be felt most: public health, extreme weather, water supply, and quality of life. In each case study American Rivers demonstrates how these water management strategies build resilience to the projected impacts of climate change in that area and how the communities that have adopted them will continue to thrive in an uncertain future.

·         Sustainable Water Systems: Step One – Redefining the Nation’s Infrastructure Challenge, The Aspen Institute, May 2009.  In 2008 the Aspen Institute convened a Dialogue on Sustainable Water Infrastructure in the U.S., bringing together distinguished leaders from the water utility industry; federal, state, and local government regulators; and non-profit environmental groups to develop policy recommendations that address water infrastructure planning and management challenges for the coming decades. This report highlights 10 KEY POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS for a sustainable water infrastructure, which were developed and adopted by dialogue participants. Taken as a whole, these recommendations represent a departure from traditional assumptions about the nature of water resources and services that have informed regulatory policy in the U.S. up to now.

·         The Carbon Footprint of Water, River Network, May 2009.  The Carbon Footprint of Water explores the energy and carbon emissions embedded in the nation’s water supplies. In this report, River Network has developed a baseline estimate of water-related energy use in the United States, as well as a comparative overview of the energy embedded in different water supplies and end-uses. The report also includes numerous examples of how water management strategies can protect our freshwater resources while reducing energy and carbon emissions.

·         Clean Water Infrastructure: A Variety of Issues Needed to Be Considered When Designing a Clean Water Trust Fund, United States Government Accountability Office, May 2009.  GAO was asked to (1) obtain stakeholders' views on the issues that would need to be addressed in designing and establishing a clean water trust fund and (2) identify and describe potential options that could generate about $10 billion in revenue to support a clean water trust fund. In conducting this review, GAO administered a questionnaire to 28 national organizations representing the wastewater and drinking water industries, state and local governments, engineers, and environmental groups and received 22 responses; reviewed proposals and industry papers; interviewed federal, state, local, and industry officials; and used the most current data available to estimate the revenue that could potentially be raised by various taxes on a range of products and activities.

·         Wasting Our Waterways: Industrial Toxic Pollution and the Unfulfilled Promise of the Clean Water Act, Environment America October 2009.  Industrial facilities dumped 232 million pounds of toxic chemicals into America’s waterways, according to this seminal report by Environment America. The report also finds that toxic chemicals were discharged in 1,900 waterways across all 50 states. The Environment America report documents and analyzes the dangerous levels of pollutants discharged in to America’s waters by compiling toxic chemical releases reported to the U.S. EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory for 2007, the most recent data available.

·         Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water, Maude Barlow, May 2009 (paperback edition).  In her latest book, Maude Barlow examines how water companies are reaping vast profits from declining supplies, and how ordinary people from around the world have banded together to reclaim the public's right to clean water, creating a grassroots global water justice movement.  While tracing the history of international battles for the right to water, she documents the life-and-death stakes involved in the fight and lays out the actions that we as global citizens must take to secure a water just world for all.  As people around the world turn their attention to the effects of climate change, Blue Covenant is a timely and important reminder for us to take heed of the global water crisis's impact on humans and the natural world.

·         The World's Water 2008-2009: The Biennial Report on Freshwater Resources, The Pacific Institute, January 2009.  Produced biennially, The World’s Water provides a timely examination of the key issues surrounding freshwater resources and their use. Each new volume identifies and explains the most significant trends worldwide, and offers the best data available on a variety of topics related to water. This new volume contains an updated chronology of global conflicts associated with water, as well as brief reviews of issues regarding desalination, the Salton Sea, and the Three Gorges Dam.

It’s March 12th and we are exactly 235 days away from Election Day – November 2nd 2010.  The campaign has begun to ramp up and really take shape, but we need your help!!

Recent reports from the legislature show that the outlook for natural resource and conservation funding, particularly for clean water, is in jeopardy.  If we don’t protect our natural resources now, then we will definitely pay later.  Underfunding conservation programs is not the path towards future growth.  Funding Iowa’s natural resources and conservation is a wise investment for the future of our state.  More than 27,000 jobs are funded by outdoor recreation, we are losing valuable federal conservation dollars because we are unable to come up with a state match, and we lose 5 tons per acre of our world-famous soil every year due to erosion.

Additionally, water quality monitoring has been cut dramatically over the last four months.  Clean water is a right of all Iowans and should always be made a budget priority.  As Iowans once again face more flooding as record amounts of snow and ice begin to melt, we are reminded of the importance of funding for watershed improvement and wetlands restoration.  Iowan’s can’t afford another 1993 or 2008, so let’s make watershed improvement a budget priority.

Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy amendment is the vehicle to secure a sustainable and accountable source of funding for natural resources and outdoor recreation in Iowa.

So, what are we asking you for?  Resources.  Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy amendment will be the largest conservation ballot measure in the country this year and we need what it takes to win.  We have an aggressive budget that we believe will deliver the votes we need on election day, but that takes resources.  To that end, Pheasants Forever has partnered with the campaign to match, dollar for dollar, everything we raise between now and April 15th – for a total of $125,000.  If we fill this entire match we will have raised $250,000.  This is an incredible opportunity to leverage your contribution.  A contribution of $1000 immediately doubles to $2000.

Please forward this information along to your email lists, your mailing lists, your board members, your neighbors, and your friends.  Every dollar counts and we can make it very easy for people to contribute.  Supporters can visit http://www.iowaswaterandlandlegacy.org/donate.aspx to donate online or they can send a check to:

PO BOX 93176 • Des Moines, IA 50393-3176

I, and the rest of the members of the campaign, appreciate the support you have all given us so far.  Now it’s time to dig deep and get over the finish line.  Thank you for your support.

Mark Langgin – Campaign Manager
Iowa’s Water and Land Legacy
