Re: [sri-nepal] Press Release in "The Rising Nepal" on December 21, 2005

Dear Masud,

the best would be, if you could contact others in Bangladesh, who are invovled in SRI. Maybe some collegues in this network could provide contact details (eg Norman) ???

The good news to you is, that SRI works with any rice seeds your farmers have, even local varieties. Research seems to suggest that HYVs may have some higher yield potential, also under SRI. You can roughly estimate 10% of your normal seedrate being sufficient for the same area under SRI.

The other good news is, that SRI fits very well with organic farming principles, like enhancing soil live, healthy seedling and plant development, higher resistance to pets and deseases, organic fertilization, mechanical weeding and soil aeration, even mulching systems with zero till.

The best is for you to follow the general principles of SRI, and then try it out yourself under your condition to gain experience. Plant first small plots and maybe experiment with plating distances between 20 and 50 cm. In the Nepal context  the 20 cm distance seems to give higher yields over wider spacing, but this is much dependant on your soil and water management options, and the tillering ability of your variety.

Hopefully this will give you some good ideas for starting. Please would others in the network add to this, or correct me if I gave wrong suggestions.

Thanks,
Andreas Jenny

Dear All,
Will appreciate more information from SRI group members on trying out SRI practice in Bangladesh. Will appreciate if others could kindly specify seeds that will give best result. Also if this could be done in organic way. Bangladesh is a rice producing country and we would like to set up few demonstration plots to encourage others to adopt the practice.
Will appreciate information on use of fertilizer, density of plants per acre and any other relevant information, which will enable us to make the best presentation. Will also appreciate promotional materials.
With warmest regards.
