Y’all might be interested in these tips

From a professional organic gardener friend-of-a-friend.

Hi All,

As some of you know, I do professional gardening and have a personal commitment to only using organic products as much as possible.

There are some very good alternatives to persistent chemicals out there, more come out each year and I wanted to share some of what I've been learning.

Weedkillers:

Use BurnOut instead of Round-Up or Finale. BurnOut is made from vinegar and citrus oils... and is organic. Works just as well (I can vouch for it).

Pre-Emergent Herbicides:

Use Concern or one of the other organic products made from corn gluten instead of PREEN. This product is great, and comes by different names depending on the company that makes it. Even smells good, and effectively keeps weed seeds from germinating. Great to put under mulch.

Japanese Beetle stuff:

Milky Spore is the long-term approach. You can read more at www.milkyspore.com but the gist of it is that the grubs take it in, while in the ground, and don't complete their full growth to beetle stage. Otherwise the japanese beetle traps work or good 'old hand-picking them off to drop in turpentine/rubbing alcohol/bleach/whatever.

Fertilizers:

Organic fertilizers are taken up by the plants far better. I really like the Espoma Company's products of Plant-tone, Holly-tone etc. They've been around forever and their products really make a difference in the plants. Fish Emulsion is good too.

the Safer company has a line of organic pest sprays for caterpillars that munch on leaves, earwigs, pretty much any insect that can be causing problems in your garden, etc...

If your local garden center or national chain that you frequent does not carry these, ask them to get them... People want to buy organic more and more, and these retailers know it these days, finally... But we need to push them along a little. ;~)

Happy July!

Mare

I want to reccommend a book, "You Can Prevent Global Warming:(and save
money) 51 Easy Ways" by Jeffrey Langholz, Ph.D. and Kelly Turner.
Andrews McMeel Publishing,Kansas City:2003. I just opened it randomly
to page 125 and the tip that caught my eye was "Don't cook dinner." It
is in the section on cooling, and the deal is to not use the stove to
cook and generate heat and humidity when the home's cooling system is
already working hard during the heat of the day. Actually there are
many more than 51 tips. This one is just part of the overal Tip # 21,
Alternative Ways to Cool that helps folks to conserve while cooling.
Another is that the use of ceiling fans allows the thermostat to be set
6 degrees higher for the same comfort level. I know that is true since
I use the fans and set my AC on 81. Happy conserving! Gerri Aston

Hi: I'm Shirley Fifield liason with All Saints' Montgomery. We had a great day
on Stewards for Creaton Sunday with the presentation of a resolution to care for
God's creation, written by our committee and adoped by the vestry. Special
prayers and collects were read during the worship service. An information table
was set up with materials on recycling, web sites available, energy conservation
along with pictures of wildflowers to illustrate God's gift to us. We plan to
continue this effort during the Easter season.
I also provided a plant survey of the many interesting plants and trees in our
gardens and wooded area and invited the congregation to take a pilgrimage around
the property in order to more fully appreciate our beautiful setting. All
Saints' is blessed with a broad expanse of open space nestled in a back drop of
a wooded hillside, with several small gardens including a Trinity Memorial
Garden, Moss garden, Labyrinth and herb garden. It all makes for a very earth
friendly environment visible from the many windows in our church building.
I would like to hear about the celebrations in other congregations.
    Yours in Christ, Shirley Fifield

Michael, this is great.  I am Deacon Gerri Aston, deacon to the Task Force and assigned to St. Andrew's.  I am currently presenting "A Catechism of Creation: An Episcopal Understanding" to a group of folks at St. Andrew's and I will be sharing my experience of presenting this offering from our National Church Center at the Parish Leadership Training Event at St. Luke's on April 1.  Contact Sarah Sartain at Carpenter House (715-2060) if you are interested in attending.  For anyone who is unable to attend, the Catechism is available on the Episcopal Church USA web site.  It is a 26 page download, so set your printer for two-sided printing.  In the bibliography, which is wonderfully extensive, there is a citation to a web site at Berea College for essays from Robert Schneider.  He is one of the principle authors of the Catechism, and the essays are a wonderful complement.  Our first session was a presentation by the Chair of the Task Force, Dr. Eleanor DelBene called the Cosmic Walk.  It is an experiential look at the history of our God created universe.  Everyone who attended was deeply touched.  I hope some of you will be with me on April 1.  Deacon Gerri Aston

Just go the email and joined tonight. I am the liason from St Marks in
Prattville and also the Stewardship Program director on our Vestry. I
am also a member of the Diocesan Task Force.

At St. Marks we just finished a project started in late Nov. We
collected old cell phones and gave them to the Sunshine Center in
Montgomery (an advocacy group for abused women). They use the fixable
phones so that their clients have immediate 911 access. They get some
money for other phones for parts.

I put a display on a table with some cell phone recycle fact sheets.
I'd be glad to send anyone a copy of the 2 fact sheets I developed for
the collection display. Recycling keeps the old phones out of the
landfill. They contain the battery and heavy metals.

We collected a little under 40 phones with chargers plus 2 old bag
phones and misc. chargers and parts. It's a good first project.
