This message, which keeps coming into the StormwaterPro list, means that at
least one subscriber has a computer connected the Internet that's infected
with the Sobig.E worm, which is a mass mailing bit of malware that's all
over the Internet right now. The server that our list group is hosted on is
set up to remove attachments that are infected with viruses and other
malware, which is why there's never an attachment for you to think about
opening. That's a nice bit of protection, but that still means that at
least one of us has a computer that is broadcasting Sobig to every e-mail
address on its hard drive(s). If it's connected to a network, it's likely
that there are other infected computers on the network, too.
Symantec, the folks who have Norton AntiVirus, have a removal and repair
tool that's available for free at
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sobig.e@mm.html
(If you don't see the entire URL as a link in your e-mail application, you
can copy and paste it to the address field of your web browser.)
It's a really good idea to have one of the anti-virus market leaders
installed on any computer you own...but it's especially important to have it
on any computer that's connected to the Internet. The current generation
products can be set up to screen every e-mail message for malware as it
comes in...well before you have a chance to see the message and possibly
execute damaging code on your system.
The single most important step that many people overlook is to keep the
application's virus definition database updated. There are so many new
pieces of malware flying around the Internet now, with new ones almost every
day, that these data definition sets are updated several times a month.
Most current generation anti-virus applications can be set to fetch and
install these automagically.
As to the StormwaterPro list being useless...please remember that any
discussion group is only as useful to its members as its members make it.
We all depend on your contributions and participation in the group. There's
always something new to learn, and there's likely someone here who can help
you learn it, and there's a lot of knowledge here, just waiting to be
shared. If we're more active about sharing it, all of us will be able to
improve the quality we deliver to our employers and clients.
How about it?
Norman
