I just read through the article on your site regarding storm water,
pollutants from farming and impact on water safety. I didn't see
a date on the material. How recent are these studies?
I live in Greenbrier County and we have been searching the internet
for a suitable water testing product as we have specific concerns
regarding our water safety.
This is a sensitive area, unfortunately, as it is a relative
who is, we believe (pretty sure) has poor judgement regarding the
sewage from his farm animals. He hoses it down on a daily basis into
"dip" or low spot, that is most surely a sinkhole that is not as
defined as most.
There are sinkholes everywhere on our property and his. I grew up
in this area and have explored many of them as a child and I've
been in small caves on this property and larger ones, on other people's
property near here. I live near Organ Cave and know that the spelunkers
have traveled more than 12 miles from Organ Cave to the Alderson, WV area
(about a 12 mile drive from here).
I digress....
The low spot is below his barn. The "pond" of "Yuk" never gains much
depth, indicating that it is draining below... to somewhere! To the
north a few acres away is the well that our water comes from.
We used to have a very clean water supply from an artesian water supply at
a high point on our property. When I was a kid, my father had about
30 or so cows. This farm went to the person I'm talking about now, who
has about 100 or so now??? He has had more than that but I believe its
less lately. My dad warned him if he acquired too many cows, he
would "dry up that spring and you'll have to dig a well". Dad was being
frugal mostly and didn't want to go to the expense to dig a well. Years
pass and for about 20 years or so, they've been using the same well we
do for water.
Not only do I fear for the water supply we use now, but whenever we can
dig our own well, on higher ground, hopefully finding water not down stream
from his barn....... will it be safe.
Now that I've dumped all this info on you. Our questions are:
What water test should we get? From whom and for what contaminants, exactly?
If you could come study this yourself, we would welcome you to do so.
We actually lived in the L.A. area for 18 years, then up in S.F. for about 9
years before moving here in recent years. We sure do miss CA, but don't get
me started...
Please keep this information confidential, between us, until we can talk.
This is a close knit rural area and word gets around fast. We are not very
popular as it is. Since I lived in another state for years, I'm a
"Foreigner"! It's SO bizarre. You can't even imagine.
Please respond, I'm dying for some information.
Thanks for reading/listening.
