Hi Francine
In quick response to your email, I am a Stormwater Engineer with the local
Council here in North Shore City, New Zealand.
We are requiring 'at-source' stormwater management for many sites/ new
developments in our City. The purpose is to manage adverse effects resulting
from the extensive pavements being created and associated runoff from (the
often monster-like!!!) homes.
Many people these days seem to be unaware of their environmental effects. That
denial is a problem and continues to be.
Anyway, in many places, we require that each house has utilises rainwater
harvesting of its roof area, minimum size tank generally about 4500 litres
(1000 gallons) and plumb the tank into laundry, outside taps and toilets for
use there. In addition we require that raingardens be specifically be formed
within the private lots to handle some of the runoff from pavements, vehicular
areas. Size of raingarden about 25m2 minimum.
Regards
Peter Nagels.
