What a surprise to come in and find that the list and column had been
dropped. Kind of out of the blue.

The eGroups membership is growing: 45 as of 12:00pm. Let's give a day or so for
people to get the move from n-ary list to the SysCon list and then to get the
move from there to eGroups on their own before we be more aggressive. I know
_some_ people don't read the ST messages in real time, so they may not be up to
date on current events in the ST world yet. :-)

Additionally, it comes with KDE pre-configured as your desktop, they claim
80 themes supplied, although I don't think they are all loaded, You can
switch to something else like GNOME I'm sure fairly easily. The
installation of new software is very easy as well. They have kpackage,
which I assume is part of KDE, for point and click installation.
However, you can start up a regular terminal at any time, which is what I
did when I compiled and ran my first Java app on Linux.

Well, I had never really heard that many bad things about Caledera's
distribution, and I looked at several others, RH, S.U.S.E, TurboLinux
Workstation, Storm something, Mandrake, and based on price, Calderas $40,
others $50-$60 and above. I picked Caldera also because of the software
that was packaged with it, JDK1.2, Apache, FTP Server,C/C++ Compiler Star
Office(not a primary selling point, but a plus none the less). It comes
with Partition Magic and BootMagic for setting up Linux as well as setting
up dual boots.
The installation was a breeze. Installs for Linux distributions have
gotten a lot easier. I remember installing RH 5.2 and having to do alot of
the configuration manually. Plus, they put the source on a CD for you if
you want to tinker. You can install from within Windows or boot from CD if
your system supports that. I had previously downloaded binaries from the
web and never got around to compiling them. As much as I enjoy tinkering,
when I want to get up and running for development, a CD is very handy.
I'm not sure why they list "Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash, and RealAudio" as
key features but they are pre-installed none the less.
They also come with a host of other standard utilities, which most of the
other competitors had as well.
Plus, they were the only one I could see that had won awards, so someone
else must think they're doing something right. Not to say that others
haven't, but they didn't advertise it on the package very effectively.

Kenneth,
Your suggestion was eminently reasonable but I
was unable to make the change due to a server error.
I will contact the support/help center and see what
the problem may be. You should expect that this
change will be made as soon as possible unless there
is a serious objection from other members.

now it is a rather long "[straight_talking_java]"

This is rather important for those of us using textbased email programs.
Otherwise I will have to write a procmail filter to edit the subject.

Hey all,
It looks like we currently have 25 members at eGroups. I am going to stay
subscribed to both lists for a time. That way I can see who is coming to
the other list.
I don't think it is Sys-Con's fault about the break up of list. Alan had to
do what he had to do. I am sorry it had to happen. I don't think he will
be part of the list at Sys-Con as a matter of principle. But since the
eGroups list is on neutral ground, he might participate at a later date.
Like I mentioned to Alan, replacing him on a Straight Talking column would
be like the replacement of the original Darin (the mortal husband) on
Bewitched (the TV series from the 60's-70's) with that other Darin. It just
wasn't the same.
There are a lot more people out there who were on the old list than the 25
we now have here at eGroups. Maybe we may have to ask them to join us
here. Many of us still have the old mailings. What do you think?
Martin
I've been using Linux for JSP and Java work for the last 7 months. I
really like it. I started using emacs then moved to JBuilder. I have
Tomcat and Apache running at use MySQL for testing before I move my
work to the staging server which connects to an Oracle database.
I was on a project that used ASP and the M$ JVM to connect to an
Access database. It wasn't a horrible experience, but enough minor
irritations made me lorn for my Linux platform. Now I'm back and I
really am more productive.

I had another solution, but yours is quicker ;-)
turn over the four and seven.
when four is empty turn both again.
when seven is empty turn both again.
when four is empty turn both again.
when seven is empty turn both again.
At that point there's sand for 2 minutes in the seven.
start cooking
when the seven is empty turn it and wait for seven more minutes.

turn over the four two more times as it becomes empty.

BTW, perhaps someone who's friendly with Alan might want to send him a
"please join" message. Now that the list is out of SysCon's hands, he
probably will want to be a part of it. (And I for one would welcome his
participation.)

Anyone else using Linux as their development workstation? I made the
choice to switch this weekend and so far I've been havin' fun! I picked
OpenLinux from Caldera, I had RH 5.2 previously. I will still be dual

Good morning,
Suppose you are tasked with boiling an egg for exactly nine minutes
but, instead of a clock, you are given two hour glasses. One hour
glass has 7 minutes of sand, the other 4. How can you accurately
measure 9 minutes with these two glasses?
I already posted this on the sys-con forum but I wanted to re-post
here since I really think we need to stop vagabonding and settle.
So far only Geert Van Damme has responded to the riddle but only to
say I cook my eggs too long. There we go talking programmer breakfast
again.

Well here are the final results of the closest BOTM voting ever.
June: Java Enterprise in a Nutshell
July: Java Design Patterns
August: Applied Cryptography
Since the voting was so close I added an extra month on the voting results.
I put Java Design Patterns & Applied Cryptography in that order because more
