 Three Day Seminar on

"Vehicle Dynamics and Safety"

Organized by

M. S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies

Date: 17th, 18th & 19th December 2009
(Thursday, Friday & Saturday)

Venue: M. S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies, Bangalore

About the Seminar:

Be it a Formula Race, Car Race or a Motor Bike Race enthusiast building a vehicle or a family person looking for a family transport, few aspects of the vehicle play a major role in the selection of the vehicle. These are stability, maneuverability and safety. The design aspects for these are based on Vehicle Dynamics and design principles for Safety. To give an in-depth knowledge in these two areas, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety, a three day seminar has been planned for engineering students, vehicle users and practicing engineers.

Vehicle Dynamics is concerned about the response of the vehicle to the forces that act at four palm sized patches between the tyres and the road. The response metrics are performance, handling and ride and a vehicle is designed and built to meet theses metrics. Study of Safety, as related to vehicles, concerns itself with the potential impacts between two vehicles and/or between occupant or pedestrian and a vehicle, and resulting damage/injury to the vehicles and humans.

On the first two days Vehicle Dynamics metrics will be defined and analyzed and on the last day safety aspects will be dealt with. In Vehicle Dynamics, the topics that will be covered are Fundamentals of Load Transfer, Tyre Dynamics, Acceleration and Braking Performance, Ride, Suspension Dynamics and Vehicle Handling. Presentation on Safety will focus on the phenomena and Physics of collision, resulting forces and human kinematics, injury biomechanics, management of crash energy and forces through structural and system designs.

Objectives:

• To explain fundamental governing principles of Vehicle Dynamics and Safety design
• To elucidate the physics involved in vehicle dynamics and collision
• To demonstrate the use of simulation tools replicate these phenomena
• To discuss practices for improved design for improved ride, handling and safety

Who should attend?

·        Engineering Students, Faculties

·        Automotive design engineers : Ride comfort, NVH, Handling, Occupant & Pedestrian safety, Structural design, Interior design

Geotechnical Engineering
CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE IN THE MIDST of a construction revolution. Heavy structures are being located in areas formerly considered unsuitable from the standpoint of the supporting power of the underlying soils. Earth structures are contemplated that are of unprecedented height and size; soil systems must be offered to contain contaminants for time scales for which past experience is either inadequate or absent. Designs must be offered to defy the ravages of floods and earthquakes that so frequently visit major population centers.

Drought and flooding rains
Anyone who designs something on a floodplain or lives near a river has probably heard of the ‘100-year flood’. But what does this mystical number really mean?
The 100-year flood is more correctly referred to as the ‘100 year average recurrence interval (ARI) flood’; that is, the flood whose peak level is equalled or exceeded on average once in every 100 years. Even more correctly, it is the ‘0.01 annual exceedance probability (AEP) event’; that is, the flood whose peak level has a chance of being equalled or exceeded in any one year of 1%.

OOPS!

YES, IT IS A 12 STORY BUILDING LYING ON THE GROUND.
cid:1.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com

(1) An underground garage was being dug on the south side, to a depth of 4.6 meters
(2) The excavated dirt was being piled up on the north side, to a height of 10 meters
(3) The building experienced uneven lateral pressure from south and north
(4) This resulted in a lateral pressure of 3,000 tonnes, which was greater than why the pilings could tolerate. Thus the building toppled over in the southerly direction.

cid:2.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com
First, the apartment building was constructed

cid:3.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com
Then the plan called for an underground garage to be dug out.
The excavated soil was piled up on the other side of the building.

cid:4.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com
Heavy rains resulted in water seeping into the ground.

cid:5.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com
The building began to shift and the concrete pilings were snapped
due to the uneven lateral pressures.

The building began to tilt.

cid:6.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com
And thus came the eighth wonder of the world.

cid:7.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com

If the buildings were closer together there would also have been a domino effect.

cid:8.2137063895@web59208.mail.re1.yahoo.com

i'm new to the group after seeking out opportunities to get feedback from civil
and structural engineers. im opening my own business in the next 18 months, a
concert venue for local and national acts to perform at, and recently ran into a
little problem with the planning board of the township im 'working' with. my
intentions to avoid having to deal with zoning officials by building a movable
stage didnt seem to work because the plans for the stage reguardless of whether
its fixed or not need to go through them.

the township requires all sketches of the stage, however simple, to be made up
by and engineer or an architect. i was wondering if i could get peoples feedback
on my plans, no one being held liable for doing so, i just would like pointers.
id email them over to anyone interested in helping. thanks.

Structural design for Industrial Building Design and Construction is valuable as
far as today's construction industry trends are concerned. These structural
design services for structural engineering help a lot in developing a building
structure and to save precious time, money for your structural design projects.
Structural design engineers are very helpful in getting decent structural design
for your buildings.
Structural design includes use of structural design software and occasionally
the hardware - predominantly that helps structural design engineers and the
architects in the construction industry. Structural design engineers should be
having good qualifications and creativity by considering the types and the
combinations of the loads, internal forces which can emerge in the life of the
building's structure. With the help of International Guidelines for structural
design, they can maximize the utilities of structural design in building
construction life cycle.
Should the building structure be considered at the huge cost to resist the most
serious earthquake which it is possible to imagine, or impact of the being
crushed planes? If not, should it at least have the means a certain protection,
finishing to the top folded but more-or-less entirety? These complex questions
can easily be solved using structural design assistance.
Structural design engineers are really helpful here. This is mainly because they
have thorough knowledge of structural design specifications and have enough
industry experience. Reliable structural designs can be vital for any building
professional in today's fast construction industry. Structural design includes
following:
Offshore structural design and drafting services
Design of Reinforced Cement Concrete Structures like buildings, tanks,
retaining walls etc.
Replacement Structure Designs for any deteriorated structures
Design of pre-stressed and post-tensioned structures like parking structures
As a conclusion, structural design by structural design engineers can be seen as
a very helpful process which is most useful in building design and construction.

HI,
Can anybody guide me about how I can design Road-pavement thickness for Roads in
Queensland Australia.
These type of road are existing in Queensland on country-side. These roads are
similar to WBM Roads. I may share some of photographs if required.

Thanks,

1) you can directly give your eff. slab thickness to any toppin or membrane it will giv same result.
2) stiffness modifier is used to select an alternative by chenging area but with same stiffness
3) sway n non sway columns are dependin upon braced n unbraced frame

Dear Members,

I am an user of ETABS and i am working on the  5-storey building. i am having some queries:

(i)   Why we are giving the precast slab bending as only topping thickness and membarane as the total equivalent thickness including topping?

(ii). While studying the storey drifts should we give the stiffness modifiers as " 1 " ? why is it so?

(iii) while studying the design of column , when to give sway and non-sway type?

(iv) what is concept behind giving stiffness modifier?

Thanks in advance.

BEST REGARDS,

Chandra Kiran Katneni
